Bald Eagle Nest Cam in Hanover, PA - Live

By clicking on the photo you can see and hear activity at an eagle nest - live.
Season three began December 28 at the Hanover nest. The cameras and audio equipment installed for the 2016 season continue to provide excellent views and audio of this eagle family.
The live stream began December 17, 2016 shortly after the installation of two new cameras and audio equipment. Eggs were laid on February 18 and 21. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest.
Hanover is located in south-central PA about five miles from the Mason-Dixon line.

February Revolution begins 1917

In Russia, the February Revolution begins when riots and strikes over the scarcity of food erupt in Petrograd. One week later, centuries of czarist rule in Russia ended with the abdication of Nicholas II, and Russia took a dramatic step closer toward communist revolution.
On March 8, 1917, demonstrators clamoring for bread took to the streets in the Russian capital of Petrograd (now known as St. Petersburg). Supported by 90,000 men and women on strike, the protesters clashed with police but refused to leave the streets. On March 10, the strike spread among all of Petrograd’s workers, and irate mobs of workers destroyed police stations.
On March 11, the troops of the Petrograd army garrison were called out to quell the uprising. On March 12, the revolution triumphed when regiment after regiment of the Petrograd garrison defected to the cause of the demonstrators.
The imperial government was forced to resign, and the Duma formed a provisional government that peacefully vied with the Petrograd Soviet for control of the revolution. On March 14, the Petrograd Soviet issued “Order No. 1,” which instructed Russian soldiers and sailors to obey only those orders that did not conflict with the directives of the Soviet. The next day, March 15, Czar Nicholas II abdicated the throne in favor of his brother Michael, whose refusal of the crown brought an end to the czarist autocracy.

Pizza-tossing brothers draw attention at dad's New Jersey eatery

(UPI) A pair of New Jersey pizza-tossing prodigies are going viral thanks to a video of them showing off their skills with a practice dough at their father's pizzeria. Carmine Testa posted a video to the official Facebook page for his sons, Michael and Nicholas, showing the boys tossing a rubber practice pizza dough back and forth to demonstrate their pie-slinging skills.
Testa said Michael, 12, and Nicholas, 10, have shown off their skills on TV shows including Rachel Ray, The Chew, Dr. Oz. Hell's Kitchen with Gordon Ramsey, the Steve Harvey Show, and Access Hollywood Live, but the video he recorded in February at his Jersey City restaurant, Carmine's Pizza Factory, is their first viral hit.
Testa said a 2012 article in the Jersey Journal got Michael started on the road to celebrity.
"Michael was 7 at the time and The Jersey Journal article got picked up by the Huffington Post and then it just took off from there," Testa told NJ.com. "There has been one appearance after another. Nicholas was getting tired of sitting in the audience and watching his brother, so he started practicing."

Volunteers bring healthier smiles to kids in need

(BPT) - Did you know half of all children in this country enter kindergarten with tooth decay? Tooth decay is the number one chronic infectious disease among children in the U.S., affecting 42 percent of children aged 2 to 11 years old, according to the National Institutes of Health. In addition, nearly half of minority children and children receiving Medicaid benefits suffer from untreated tooth decay. Good oral health is connected to good overall health. In fact, problems in the mouth can impact the rest of the body. If the tooth decay isn't fixed - or prevented in the first place - the consequences are much broader; children with untreated tooth decay often have more school absences, difficulty paying attention in school and lower self-esteem.
The good news is that with proper management and intervention, early forms of tooth decay can actually be stopped and reversed. Oral care habits start at home. Children should:
* Brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste;
* Floss once a day;
* Eat healthy meals;
* Visit the dentist once a year.
Unfortunately, despite improvements in children's access to dental care, many children continue to suffer. Leading the charge to address the gap in children's oral health care is Give Kids A Smile (GKAS), a national grassroots movement of passionate volunteer dental professionals and dental industry employees who work tirelessly behind the scenes to address this problem.
Dr. Timothy Kinnard, dental director at the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic, has seen GKAS in action first hand. "The Give Kids A Smile program gives children critically necessary dental treatment they may otherwise may not be able to access," Kinnard says. "It's a wonderful demonstration of how access to dentistry helps reduce the oral health disparities that exist in underserved communities."
Kids who attend one of 1,300 annual GKAS programs receive free oral health services including education, screening, preventive services and/or treatment from GKAS volunteers. GKAS is the largest children's oral health charitable program in the U.S., already providing 5.5 million children in need with services since the first national event in 2003. More than 500,000 volunteers, including almost 140,000 dentists, have volunteered their time and resources at thousands of sites nationwide to help children who may not otherwise have access to dental care.
Taking action
More needs to be done to teach families how to prevent childhood tooth decay. GKAS volunteers are working year-round to educate kids and families in their communities, and to provide free dental care to kids in need. Give Kids A Smile is part of the American Dental Association's Action for Dental Health initiative, highlighting the need for improved access to dental care for kids. The ADA Foundation continues to support GKAS volunteers so they can focus on what they do best - caring for those in need.

Books Make Great Easter Gifts for Kids

(StatePoint) Filling Easter baskets for the kids? Think beyond the typical sweets and treats and consider including books as well.
“All kids love books, even if they’re too little to read. For babies and toddlers, choose kid-sized books full of bright photos that they will love looking at again and again. There’s so much research showing how important reading is for a child’s development. You can build on it by making the experience fun for parents and their children,” says Rachel Barry, vice president of marketing and publicity at DK, a publisher of adult and children’s books.
This Easter, consider these seasonal selections.
Fun at the Farm
Cushioned, bumpy and shiny pages encourage sensory development, language skills and early reading skills. As part of DK’s Touch and Feel Series, “Really Feely: Farm” introduces babies and toddlers to a favorite pre-school subject: farm animals, including fluffy ducklings, woolly sheep, and a bristly pig.
Learning Adventure
Help build your baby’s identification and language skills. In “100 First Words,” photography and labels introduce primary concepts like shapes, colors and animals, and encourage pointing, naming, and talking.
Favorite Animals
A classic board book, “Baby Touch & Feel: Animals,” helps children develop their knowledge of animals while increasing the use of their senses. Babies will meet puppies, kittens, penguins and other animals throughout the pages of this book that features photographs and touch-and-feel textures.
Pop-Up Surprises
For children who love farm animals, consider an interactive book featuring flaps, touch-and-feel textures and incredible pop-out surprises. Promoting memory, imagination and parent-and-child interaction, “Pop-Up Peekaboo: Farm” enhances the reading experience.
Feel the Love
Celebrate love and promote sensory development and early language skills with this USA Today Bestseller, “Baby Touch & Feel: I Love You,” which features soft bunnies, fuzzy teddy bears, sparkly hearts and more. More kids’ books for Easter can be found at PenguinRandomHouse.com.
To make sure your Easter baskets include gifts that can be enjoyed beyond the holiday, include books that will become young readers’ all-time favorites.

BHS Class of 1986 Scholarship
A memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by the Bangor Area High School Class of 1986 to honor the memory of deceased classmates. It is named in Gary Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. They have since dedicated this memorial scholarship to recognize other classmates who have passed in recent years: David Pritchard, Cherry Oyer Klinger, Frank Lisovich, Melissa Fox Niceforo, and Kelly Cory.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement.
Anyone interested in applying for the scholarship should see the guidance counselor at Bangor High School.

1885 Club Accepting Nominations
The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.
To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Nominations can also be e mailed to hontzc@bangorsd.org

Letters to Homefront Magazine
A Love Story Between a Community and its World War II Soldiers

The project to publish a book about the Homefront Magazine began in October 2015. The co-authors; Marc Blau, Chip Turtzo, Karen Brewer and Deanna Ruzanski assembled volunteers to read and summarize the 4000 + letters that WW II soldiers sent home to their beloved Homefront Magazine.
The letters were then categorized by topic, and placed into appropriate chapters. Some of the chapters are: The Fairest of the Month, Battlefield Stories, Soldier’s Artwork, Poems and Prayers, Heroes and more.
The book highlights the letters and used the hand-written words of our Slate Belt fighting men and women to tell the story. Many of your fathers and grandfathers are mentioned in the book and while it was unfeasible to use all of the letters, those that were chosen was based on content. Books can be picked up on Sunday April 23, 2017 from 9 -Noon., however to unsure that copies are available for all who would like a copy, pre-orders are now being taken.
Please send a check payable to the Slate Belt Heritage Center (att: Marc Blau) for $35.00 to reserve your copy. Those out of town desiring a copy must add $10..00 to cover cost for shipping/handling. For additional information contact: Karen Brewer @ 610-588-8615.
