Heritage Center Opens 18th Year April 1 The Slate Belt Heritage Center (SBHC), located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA will be celebrating its 18th Anniversary of incorporation in conjunction with the Spring Opening on Saturday, April 1st . The Heritage Center is a not-for-profit 501(c) 3 organization whose mission is: To establish and offer for public view and educational purposes: artifacts, displays, DVD’s, oral histories, genealogies and research information that reflect local Slate Belt history and heritage, and to perpetuate our Slate Belt Heritage, ethnic contributions, industry and history so that future generations may learn and appreciate our valued past.
The Heritage Center, located in the former 1907 Bangor Town Hall in the heart of the Slate Belt, focuses on the lives of people who settled in this part of America, from the Lenape to the waves of immigrants-the Scots-Irish, German, Cornish, Welsh, Italian, Jewish and others whose families live here today. The Heritage Center also houses rooms for the textile and slate industries, in addition to the Homefront and Fire rooms. SBHC presents Preservation Awards to people who preserve Slate Belt heritage and hosts students and teachers ranging from local 4th graders to the University of Pennsylvania Preservation and Design classes. The Center preserves nearly 3000 Slate Belt treasures which inspire heritage murals, historic building rehabs, family research and trips down memory lane. Upgraded computer hardware and software increase public use of Heritage Center collections. like the “Homefront Letters”. Recently, safe, efficient and versatile lighting was installed in the Council Chamber. SBHC produces programs, exhibits, and tours for community groups, schools, special events, reunions and other museums. In 2016, the Center facilitated the historic architectural survey of the 1907 Italianate building. The Slate Belt Heritage Center produces changing exhibits, monthly programs and seasonal events. Featured this year in the Council Chamber, will be “Letters to Homefront” A Love Story Between a Community and its’ World War II Soldiers”. This display is to compliment the book that the Heritage Center has just published. SBHC is open to the public Saturdays and Sunday 12-3 PM April through October, and Sundays 12-3 PM November through March. Admission is FREE. Private tours are available upon request. Monthly presentations are held the second Thursday of each month from April-November at 7:00 PM and the second Sunday of each month from December-March at 2:00 PM. Black Balloon Overdose Awareness Day
March 6 Please hang a Black Balloon outside of your home or business to show awareness for all the ones we have lost to addiction. This is a sign that you have been affected by drug addiction or an overdose death. It is a sign that we are all in this together! This is the second annual event, last year it was a huge success with over 40,000 participants. The Addicts Mom supports this event. Bayer patents aspirin - 1899
On this day in 1899, the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin registers Aspirin, the brand name for acetylsalicylic acid, on behalf of the German pharmaceutical company Friedrich Bayer & Co. Now the most common drug in household medicine cabinets, acetylsalicylic acid was originally made from a chemical found in the bark of willow trees. In its primitive form, the active ingredient, salicin, was used for centuries in folk medicine, beginning in ancient Greece when Hippocrates used it to relieve pain and fever. Known to doctors since the mid-19th century, it was used sparingly due to its unpleasant taste and tendency to damage the stomach.
Aspirin was made available in tablet form and without a prescription in 1915. Two years later, when Bayer’s patent expired during the First World War, the company lost the trademark rights to aspirin in various countries. After the United States entered the war against Germany in April 1917, the Alien Property Custodian, a government agency that administers foreign property, seized Bayer’s U.S. assets. Two years later, the Bayer company name and trademarks for the United States and Canada were auctioned off and purchased by Sterling Products Company, later Sterling Winthrop, for $5.3 million. Season three began December 28 at the Hanover nest. The cameras and audio equipment installed for the 2016 season continue to provide excellent views and audio of this eagle family. The live stream began December 17, 2016 shortly after the installation of two new cameras and audio equipment. Eggs were laid on February 18 and 21. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest. BAHS Marching Band Uniform Fund Drive The Bangor Area High School Marching Band uniforms, which are modeled after Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. After years of normal wear and tear, the uniforms must be replaced. The new uniforms will continue to use the same style.
The Slater Band Boosters have initiated a fund drive to support this effort. The Boosters will appreciate any donations, small or large, to this cause. The names of contributors will be acknowledged in concert programs during the 2016-2017 school year. East Bangor UMC Lenten Bible Study The East Bangor United Methodist Community Church is offering a Lenten Bible Study, "The Seedy Side of Jacob". We all know Jacob, the highly-regarded patriarch of the Israelites. From Jacob came the offspring who became "The Twelve Tribes of Israel," who were the foundation of the Jewish movement. Jacob was, and is, highly revered. He was also human - very human. And in his humanness his quest for power and authority often got in the way of his decision-making process. During Lent, we will take a look at the less-than-admirable side of Jacob in the quest to embrace our own humanity and seek alternatives to accomplishing God's will without resorting to cleverness and self-centeredness. Charter Day at the Anthracite Heritage Museum
Anthracite Heritage Museum will feature gallery talks, tours and FREE Admission on Pennsylvania Charter Day on Sunday, March 12th!
Scranton — The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum will host Pennsylvania Charter Day on Sunday, March 12, 2017, from noon to 5 p.m. Charter Day is traditionally a day when Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission sites open admission-free in commemoration of the document by which King Charles II granted to William Penn the vast tract of land known today as Pennsylvania. Museum volunteers will be available to give guided tours. Gallery talks of a new exhibit will be offered in addition to activities for children. Refreshments will be served and visitors are invited to enjoy a Pennsylvania “Birthday” cake!
This program is supported, in part, by a Lackawanna County Arts and Culture grant, a program of Lackawanna County Commissioners Patrick O’Malley, Jerry Notarianni and Laureen A. Cummings.
The Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum is located in McDade Park, off Keyser Avenue, in Scranton (Exits 182 or 191-B off I-81, and Exit 122, Keyser Avenue, from I-476). Scranton — The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum will host Pennsylvania Charter Day on Sunday, March 12, 2017, from noon to 5 p.m. Charter Day is traditionally a day when Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission sites open admission-free in commemoration of the document by which King Charles II granted to William Penn the vast tract of land known today as Pennsylvania. Museum volunteers will be available to give guided tours. Gallery talks of a new exhibit will be offered in addition to activities for children. Refreshments will be served and visitors are invited to enjoy a Pennsylvania “Birthday” cake!
This program is supported, in part, by a Lackawanna County Arts and Culture grant, a program of Lackawanna County Commissioners Patrick O’Malley, Jerry Notarianni and Laureen A. Cummings.

Sunday, March 5th @ 2:00 PM – Photographer Ernie Dietz will do his Viaduct Presentation. This program was postponed from Sunday, February 12th due to inclement weather. Mr. Dietz will do a picture tour of before the Bangor Viaduct was built in 1939, during its’ recent demolition and the Viaduct’s new construction.
