Bald Eagle Nest Cam in Hanover, PA - Live
By clicking on the photo you can see and hear activity at an eagle nest - live.
Season three began December 28 at the Hanover nest. The cameras and audio equipment installed for the 2016 season continue to provide excellent views and audio of this eagle family.
The live stream began December 17, 2016 shortly after the installation of two new cameras and audio equipment. Eggs were laid on February 18 and 21. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest.
Hanover is located in south-central PA about five miles from the Mason-Dixon line.

Triangle Shirtwaist Fire in New York City - 1911
In one of the darkest moments of America’s industrial history, the Triangle Shirtwaist Company factory in New York City burns down, killing 145 workers, on this day in 1911. The tragedy led to the development of a series of laws and regulations that better protected the safety of factory workers.
The Triangle factory, owned by Max Blanck and Isaac Harris, was located in the top three floors of the 10-story Asch Building in downtown Manhattan. It was a sweatshop in every sense of the word: a cramped space lined with work stations and packed with poor immigrant workers, mostly teenaged women who did not speak English. At the time of the fire, there were four elevators with access to the factory floors, but only one was fully operational and it could hold only 12 people at a time. There were two stairways down to the street, but one was locked from the outside to prevent theft by the workers and the other opened inward only. The fire escape, as all would come to see, was shoddily constructed, and could not support the weight of more than a few women at a time.
Blanck and Harris already had a suspicious history of factory fires. The Triangle factory was twice scorched in 1902, while their Diamond Waist Company factory burned twice, in 1907 and in 1910. It seems that Blanck and Harris deliberately torched their workplaces before business hours in order to collect on the large fire-insurance policies they purchased, a not uncommon practice in the early 20th century. While this was not the cause of the 1911 fire, it contributed to the tragedy, as Blanck and Harris refused to install sprinkler systems and take other safety measures in case they needed to burn down their shops again.

Workers break sidewalk to rescue dachshund (UPI) -- Municipal workers in a Missouri city used digging equipment to rescue a curious dachshund that darted down a groundhog hole and got stuck beneath a sidewalk.
Amanda Rhodes said her rambunctious wiener dog, Ginger, ran down a groundhog hole Monday night and followed the tunnel under a city sidewalk. Rhodes said she and her husband were unable to coax Ginger out of the hole before going to work, and her sister-in-law, Chris Redmond, ended up contacting the city. Department of Public Works Superintendent Brian Chaplin arrived to examine the scene and gave public works employees the go-ahead to break through the concrete. The sidewalk was broken using city equipment and Chaplin joined the workers in digging with their hands to free the dog. Rhodes posted a photo to Facebook showing the workers holding Ginger after the rescue. "Thought this town needs a happy happening!" she wrote. "A huge thank you to all these wonderful city employees for helping rescue my Ginger. She decided a groundhog hole looked like a good place to venture into and got stuck under the sidewalk ramp. They used their equipment and hands to dig her out. You all are AWESOME! Thank very much." |
Health...
Safety and Security for Pit Stops (NAPSI)—For most of us, making a pit stop in the bathroom is not something to which we give much thought. However, many people require much more strategic planning, especially when out and about.
This is particularly true of people with impaired bladder function who are dependent on urinary catheters to drain their bladder. According to the National Institutes of Health, urinary catheters have been used for over 3,500 years, but despite having been around for so long, even the most recent advancements in catheters have been made for the hospital or home use, rather than everyday use, making self-catheterization an awkward and uncomfortable experience. A new device named CompactCath is set to shift that paradigm, creating a new generation of catheters designed to fit seamlessly into everyday life. Designed at Stanford University by a team of physicians and engineers committed to improving the quality of life for those who need to self-catheterize, the new device makes it simpler than ever to live an active lifestyle, and is reimbursable through insurance and Medicare. Fitting discreetly in the palm of your hand with opaque packaging, CompactCath provides users with a more discreet and private experience. It also comes pre-lubricated with a hygiene sheath for comfort, convenience and cleanliness. Available in a variety of sizes for women, men and children, CompactCath was designed for maximum privacy, hygiene and ease of use, allowing users to lead active, thriving lives. For further information, visit www.compactcath.com. Mentoring...Helping Teens Navigate Their Financial Futures(NAPSI)—Ask many teens what they want to buy and chances are they will say “a car.” For many people, owning a car or truck is the first major purchase. Often, it is also the first opportunity to use credit. At the same time, the largest group to drive uninsured or to lose their vehicle through repossession for nonpayment are young men in their late teens or early 20s. Once a default hits a credit report, it can take nearly a decade to bring a credit score back up.
“When young adults run into financial problems, it’s usually due to a lack of understanding of how loans and credit work, and not a desire to act irresponsibly,” said Jack Kosakowski, president and CEO of Junior Achievement USA, the world’s leading nonprofit economic education organization for young people. “That’s why it’s important to educate teens about these concepts instead of putting them in a position to learn through trial and error.” To help teens make informed choices about their financial futures, from buying a car to paying for college, Junior Achievement has launched JA My Way at JAMyWay.org, a free, interactive online resource that provides valuable information on how money works. The site provides engaging activities, information and tools that help users better understand the various costs associated not only with buying a car, but with its upkeep. The site also has calculators to figure out college costs. It has budgeting tools and it even walks teens through filling out a 1040EZ form. Beyond financial management, the site also has resources to help teens learn how to find the right career, start a business or write a résumé. |

Letters to Homefront Magazine
A Love Story Between a Community and its World War II Soldiers
The project to publish a book about the Homefront Magazine began in October 2015. The co-authors; Marc Blau, Chip Turtzo, Karen Brewer and Deanna Ruzanski assembled volunteers to read and summarize the 4000 + letters that WW II soldiers sent home to their beloved Homefront Magazine.
The letters were then categorized by topic, and placed into appropriate chapters. Some of the chapters are: The Fairest of the Month, Battlefield Stories, Soldier’s Artwork, Poems and Prayers, Heroes and more.
The book highlights the letters and used the hand-written words of our Slate Belt fighting men and women to tell the story. Many of your fathers and grandfathers are mentioned in the book and while it was unfeasible to use all of the letters, those that were chosen was based on content. Books can be picked up on Sunday April 23, 2017 from 9 -Noon., however to unsure that copies are available for all who would like a copy, pre-orders are now being taken.
Please send a check payable to the Slate Belt Heritage Center (att: Marc Blau) for $35.00 to reserve your copy. Those out of town desiring a copy must add $10..00 to cover cost for shipping/handling. For additional information contact: Karen Brewer @ 610-588-8615.

1885 Club Accepting Nominations
The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years.
We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.
