Baarda Gives Floral Arrangements Tips
Carol Akam, President conducted the February and March meetings of the Bangor Womens Club GFWC. The February inspirational reading was given by Judy Newcomb and March by Yvonne Humphreys.
Denise Baarda, Baarda Farms owner, prepared a floral arrangement at the February meeting and instructed the club how to make it. Tatum Wilson, Assistant District Attorney Northampton County assigned to the Domestic Violence Task Group informed the club about her work in investigating and prosecuting child abuse cases. She described how referrals occur, and how they proceed from report to actual trial. Child abuse cases are difficult because most cases are kin related offenders and obtaining evidence to prove the allegation. In addition to child abuse, the task force also deals with human trafficking cases. Tatum advocates for laws to make the trial process easier for victims and tougher penalties for offenders. The Bangor Womens Club GFWC is a community service organization that supports the PUMP food pantry, Salvation Army, Turning Point Domestic Violance Shelter, Bangor Public Library, Scholarships for local students, and promoting the Artistic talents of local students and club members. The club raises funds by member donations to bake sales, pie and candy sales, and card parties. Christmas and Easter Holiday meals and gifts are provided to needy local families referred to the club by the Bangor Slater Network. are Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month September thru May. Each meeting features homemade finger foods for lunch and an interesting program. The club was founded in Bangor 105 years ago and remains a valuable community resource. Slate Belt Chamber Scholarship Applications
The Slate Belt Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce applications for Scholarship Achievement Award 2019 are available March 1st at the guidance departments of Bangor High School, Pen Argyl High School, Faith Christian & Career Institute of Technology.
The Slate Belt Chamber of Commerce will award one scholarship to a senior from each of the four area schools: Bangor, Pen Argyl, Faith Christian & Career Institute of Technology. Applicants must reside in the Slate Belt to apply.
The scholarships will be presented to the students based upon the following criteria; academic accomplishment, demonstrated service to school and/or community, demonstration of leadership capabilities and future vocational plans.
Please note: A separate award, The Frederick R. Curcio, Jr. Scholarship Award, may also be applied for at this time. To qualify a senior must been enrolled in a computer science related course or planning to attend a Technical School of their choice or majoring in computer science.
Applications must be received by April 15, 2019. To honor the recipients, parents and friends, a Scholarship Awards Dinner is planned for May 17th at Tuscarora Inn. For more information contact the guidance department or the chamber office at 610.588.1000.

Slate Belt Regional Police Departments Citizen's Police Academy registration is Open. The 2019 Academy class will run every Wednesday from April 17 - June 5, 2019, 6:00pm - 8:30pm. They will tour the Northampton County 9-1-1 Center and Monroe County Prison.
Come meet SBRPD officers and learn what an officer encounters on a daily basis. Follow the link below to the Citizen's Police Academy tab and sign up. Deadline for applications is Friday, March 29th. Faith Christian School's Sixth Annual Gala
The sixth annual Faith Gala “Masquerade Ball” to be held at the historic Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort in Shawnee on Delaware, PA, Saturday, April 27 from 5 to 9 p.m.
The theme of this year’s gala is Masquerade Ball, “Unmasking greatness, one student at a time.” Formal wear is suggested; black tie and masks are optional.

Just like you prepared your home for open houses and showings, it’s important to have your home ready for the inspection, too.
Here are some tips to help make the home inspection process smoother with a little less worry once you know what an inspector will be looking for.

Here are some tips to help make the home inspection process smoother with a little less worry once you know what an inspector will be looking for.
Interior
We’ll start with the home’s interior. An inspector will spend most of their time looking through all areas of the home, including attics, basements and crawl spaces.
- Doors and windows: A home inspector will make sure your windows and doors are in working order. This includes that they open and close properly and don’t have damage or broken hardware. The inspector will also check to make sure the frames are secured and any glass is undamaged.
- Trim around doors, windows and baseboards: The inspector will check to make sure the wood trim is installed properly and in good condition throughout the home.
- Interior rooms: The inspector will want to make sure your walls are properly framed (and not leaning) and that there’s enough insulation. They will also check to make sure there are sufficient heating vents. A home inspector will also check the paint, wall coverings and paneling to make sure it’s in good condition. Additionally, the inspector will make sure the flooring materials are in good condition and there aren’t any cracks in the floors, walls or ceilings. Finally, inspectors will check to make sure stairs are even and have sufficient railings.
- Kitchen: When it comes to the kitchen, the home inspector is checking to make sure all of your included appliances are in working order, as well as the range hood fans that vent to the outside. They will also check to make sure cabinets and drawers are working properly and that there aren’t any plumping issues under your sink or near your dishwasher. Finally, the inspector will check to make sure the Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection for electrical outlets is within 6 feet of the sink.
- Plumbing: Besides checking sinks, faucets and toilets, inspectors will check drains, showers and tubs. They will also check your pipes to make sure there is adequate water pressure and temperature.
- Electrical: A home inspector will check to make sure your lights and switches are working properly, as well as electrical outlets. They will also make sure to check for adequate three-pronged electrical outlets in each room. Inspectors will make sure that electrical panels and wiring is in good working order.

Employee awards will be decided upon by the municipalities. To nominate a deserving individual for one of the other categories, please send an email with a 250 word essay on why the individual deserves to win the award and how they impact the County. Students Chosen for Regional Chorus
Ten Bangor Area High School students were chosen for the 2019 PMEA Region V Chorus Concert. Congratulations to Aimee Bealer, Hannah Bledsoe, Deja Breitfeller, Mason Cruz, Heather Heath, Joshua Martinez, Cathianne McKenna, Andrea Morokutti, Brookel Sabella and Kristen Stopfer for qualifying for this festival! The festival took place March 21-23 at Muhlenberg High School in Laureldale, PA. The best of the District 10 vocalists from northeast PA will join the best of District 7 vocalists from south central PA for the Region V Chorus.

Bangor Area High School students Hannah Bledsoe, Cathianne McKenna and Brookel Sabella have been selected to participate in the All Eastern Honors Mixed Chorus at the 2019 National Association for Music Educators April 4-7 at the David L Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburg.
They are among more than 300 students selected from eleven states in the northeast United States. To qualify for this prestigious honor, students must have been selected in their All-State ensemble during their sophomore or junior year in the 2017-18 school year. State music educators associations select the students from their state by ranking students from the previous year’s All-State groups. |

Scholarship Assistance Night
Slate Belt Rising will be hosting a Scholarship Assistance Night on Tuesday, March 26th from 6 pm until 8 pm at The HUB Community Center in Bangor. Volunteers will be present to help graduating seniors living in Bangor and Pen Argyl Area School Districts fill out applications for scholarships that are available to them. Save the date for the St. Patrick's Day parade on Sunday, March 24th. Enjoy marching units, bands, non-profit groups, politicians and local businesses marching between two boroughs to celebrate the life and good works of St. Patrick of Ireland with a grand Marshall who exhibits the similar characteristics. The parade kicks off at the Stroudsburg High School at 1:30 PM and ends at Crystal Street in East Stroudsburg. Camp Papillon's float is Harry Pawter themed!

There will be an Evening Amphibian Search at Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center on Friday, March 29 at 6:30pm to 8:00pm. Spring is here and our amphibian neighbors are springing out of the ground! Join us as we learn what amphibians are and what they’ve been doing all winter. We’ll go on a two mile walk to look for frogs and salamanders just before sunset. Bring a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes that can get wet and muddy. Registration is required.

Bangor’s Tom Menhennitt has written and published his first book “Taking The War Out of the Warrior,” which he will introduce at a launch party scheduled for 2:00pm March 31 at the Bangor Trust Brewery in downtown Bangor.
The book is “based on a chapter of my life when I was going through a separation with my wife, and then eventually a divorce,” he said. “I was filled with hate and anger and wanted to die. Through many experiences, it was exposed that I had some hidden truths to be unlocked . Through miracles and eye-opening experiences, my heart became softer and (I) learned to live a positive and happier life.”
He also has become an inspirational speaker which led to an unexpected interview with Arianna Huffington’s Thrive Global
Menhennitt says that the public is invited to the launch party which will include a live artistic representation, music and lots of fun.

Each hike will include a presentation from a guest health professional on topics such as physical fitness, stretching, and nutrition. A different guest will hike with us each month, sharing a topic that they specialize in. We will hike at a brisk pace over uneven terrain for 2 to 2.5 miles guided by a center educator. Our guest will be available during the hike to discuss the topic of the day and answer your questions. This program is being provided in partnership with St. Luke’s University Health Network and the Get Your Tail on the Trail initiative. Meet at the Visitor Center at 400 Belfast Road, Nazareth, PA. Easter Egg Hunt
On April 20th Miller's Egg Ranch will be hosting their 3rd Annual Easter Egg Hunt! After the overwhelming response to last year's event they have restructured this year's Easter Egg Hunt to accommodate a significantly larger volume of families. There is plenty of onsite parking, JT's Grill will be selling food, Grandview Granola will be joining us with parfaits, and they are dedicating 4 acres to three separate age groups hunting over 10,000 Easter eggs!
Admission to this event is free, however they will be collecting donations to our local food pantry and ask everyone that is able to, to please bring canned goods!

The Blue Mountain Community Library invites you to “LUNCH WITH AN AUTHOR” on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Grace United Methodist Church, 404 E. Mountain Ave., Pen Argyl, PA.

Local author, Maryann McFadden will discuss her novel “The Cemetery Keeper’s Wife,” her longest and most challenging work to date. It tells the story of two brave and complicated women, one real and one fictional, and an unlikely bond that transcends more than a century as they search against all odds for love, redemption and a place to belong. McFadden moved at age 10 from Brooklyn, NY to Hackettstown, NJ and lived near Union Cemetery. She became intrigued by a monument in the Cemetery.
The name and picture on the monument was of Tillie Smith, a 19 year old woman who “Died in Defense of Her Honor.” This haunted Maryann and she felt as if she was meant to write this novel, to give Tillie a voice. McFadden will have a question and answer session about her book and a Book signing. Copies will be available to purchase.
Luncheon, catered by Cafe ’on Broadway, will be at 12:00 pm (Doors open at 11:30 am) and will consist of soup, sandwich, chips, desserts and beverages. Tickets are $10 each and MUST be purchased in advance of the event. There will be no tickets available at the door.

The Bangor Womens Club GFWC will be holding a card party on Thursday April 11, 2019 at 11:30 am at Prince of Peace Church, Johnsonsville, PA. Family Night: Earth Day
April 19, 6 pm to 7:30 pm is Family Night at Jacobsburg. Join them for a celebratory hike as we honor Earth Day! We'll learn the importance of service to the place we call home by collecting litter while taking a two-mile hike around the center. We will also craft a memento to help us commemorate the day. Wear shoes that can get muddy and clothes that can get a little dirty. Registration is required.

Easter Egg Hunt
On April 20th Miller's Egg Ranch will be hosting their 3rd Annual Easter Egg Hunt! After the overwhelming response to last year's event they have restructured this year's Easter Egg Hunt to accommodate a significantly larger volume of families. There is plenty of onsite parking, JT's Grill will be selling food, Grandview Granola will be joining us with parfaits, and they are dedicating 4 acres to three separate age groups hunting over 10,000 Easter eggs!
Admission to this event is free, however they will be collecting donations to our local food pantry and ask everyone that is able to, to please bring canned goods!

Lunch With The Author
The Blue Mountain Community Library invites you to “LUNCH WITH AN AUTHOR” on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Grace United Methodist Church, 404 E. Mountain Ave., Pen Argyl, PA.

Local author, Maryann McFadden will discuss her novel “The Cemetery Keeper’s Wife,” her longest and most challenging work to date. It tells the story of two brave and complicated women, one real and one fictional, and an unlikely bond that transcends more than a century as they search against all odds for love, redemption and a place to belong. McFadden moved at age 10 from Brooklyn, NY to Hackettstown, NJ and lived near Union Cemetery. She became intrigued by a monument in the Cemetery.
The name and picture on the monument was of Tillie Smith, a 19 year old woman who “Died in Defense of Her Honor.” This haunted Maryann and she felt as if she was meant to write this novel, to give Tillie a voice. McFadden will have a question and answer session about her book and a Book signing. Copies will be available to purchase.
Luncheon, catered by Cafe ’on Broadway, will be at 12:00 pm (Doors open at 11:30 am) and will consist of soup, sandwich, chips, desserts and beverages. Tickets are $10 each and MUST be purchased in advance of the event. There will be no tickets available at the door.

Every year the Pequest Trout Hatchery and Natural Resource Education Center opens its doors to the public for the annual open house. The hatchery is located off Rt. 46 near Oxford, Warren County and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. The Open House is free of charge.
Thousands of people come to the hatchery to experience this event for themselves. There will be numerous environmental and conservation exhibits, wildlife artists, carvers and taxidermists with goods and services to sell. This event is great for people of all ages with many things to see and do throughout the day.
Activities include fishing for kids between the ages of 6 and 16, archery ranges for those aged 10 years and above, the state-of-the-art Firearm Training System used by the Hunter Education program and more. The Outdoor Market Place will be open so you can purchase what you need to get started or to stock up for the upcoming fishing and hunting seasons.
Food vendors are on site or you can bring your own lunch and enjoy our picnic groves. Please leave pets at home - only service dogs are permitted on site.
Families, friends, scout troops, church groups, fishing clubs and anyone else who enjoys the outdoors are encouraged to spend a day at this event!

A different guest will hike with us each month, sharing a topic that they specialize in. We will hike at a brisk pace over uneven terrain for 2 to 2.5 miles guided by a center educator. Our guest will be available during the hike to discuss the topic of the day and answer your questions. This program is being provided in partnership with St. Luke’s University Health Network and the Get Your Tail on the Trail initiative. Meet at the Visitor Center at 400 Belfast Road, Nazareth, PA. It's all happening at Bread Lock Park, a Warren County, NJ park located at a former lock on the old Morris Canal, so-called because the lock tender's wife baked fresh bread to sell to the families on the passing canal boats.
ParkFest is a free event intended to bring people of diverse interests from across the County and the region together for a fun day in a beautiful, historical park.
ParkFest is hosted by the Warren County Parks Foundation and the Warren County Morris Canal Committee, with support from the Warren County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Warren County Planning Department, Land Preservation Department, Public Information Department, the Explore Warren County Tourism Partnership and other sponsors.

Fine Policy For Kids
The Bangor Public library is happy to announce a new policy for kids to take responsibility for their own fines. Starting now if a junior patron (ages 15 years old or under) owes fines on their card only they may read their fines away. The junior patron will be required to read at the library in front of one of the staff members. Junior patrons will fill out a reading log; every half hour that they read will equal $1.00 off their fines. Fines can only be read off junior patron cards. The library believes that with this new policy junior patrons will learn responsibility as well as filling in the reading gap that so many kids face today.
