Green Knight Industrial Park Breaks Ground

Picture
Chairman of the Green Knight Economic Development Corporation Carlton Snyder (far right) and other area V.I.P.s break ground Friday morning for the GKEDC Industrial Park on Male Road in Wind Gap, a short distance from the Giant Supermarket and K-Mart Mall.

Friday morning, the Green Knight Economic Development Corporation (GKEDC) welcomed local, state, and federal government representatives, economic development partners, and Lehigh Valley area business leaders to the future site of the Green Knight Industrial Park for a ceremonial groundbreaking event.
Located along Route 33 near the Route 512 interchange, the Green Knight Industrial Park will house a total of approximately 200,000 square feet of building space, with lots sized to meet the demand of small-to-mid sided manufacturers and industrial firms looking to locate or expand in the region. Upon full build out, the park is estimated to create approximately 280 jobs and generate approximately $300,000 annually in additional tax revenue for the community.
.   Funding for the project has come from the GKEDC, PA DCED’s Business in Our Sites and Monroe County Local Share Account programs, Northampton County’s Community Investment Partnership Program (CIPP), and the USEPA’s Brownfield Program.
“We’ve been working toward this day for several years and we couldn’t be more excited to get construction underway” stated GKEDC Board Chairman Carlton Snyder. “A project like this requires an all-hands-on-deck approach, and we’ve been fortunate to have such a tremendous team of partners working with us to help bring this project to fruition.”
Friday’s groundbreaking ceremony commemorated the start of construction on the new roadways and other public infrastructure that will service the industrial park.
Construction of the infrastructure is scheduled to take place throughout the rest of 2018 and finish in the spring of 2019. Once the infrastructure has been installed, GKEDC will sell individual lots to developers and end users, who will construct the buildings and associated site work for their respective lots. The infrastructure work will be constructed by Muschlitz Excavating. Bohler Engineering provided engineering design services and Taggart Associates has provided project management services on behalf of the GKEDC.

Great American Camp-out Tonight

Picture
Tonight's the night for the Great American Camp-out. Camping is an American tradition. For many people, heading to a natural setting is a way to recharge their spiritual and mental batteries, and reconnect with family and friends. As a way to encourage people to soak up the outdoors, everyone is invited to be part of the Great American Camp-out sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation.   The Camp out is held on the fourth Saturday in June, and participants are encouraged to sign the camping pledge on the National Wildlife Federation website to be part of this enormous group effort.
The primary goal of the NWF is to encourage people to return to nature since we’re becoming increasingly disconnected. “The average school age kid spends a little over 7 ½ hours a day indoors. That’s a little bit out of balance,” he says. “And research looks at the negative impact on the child’s health.”
Studies indicate that children who spend time outdoors are more physically fit, and the increased level of Vitamin D from sunshine improves overall health. It’s also emotionally and mentally beneficial, as being involved in this type of unstructured activity enhances social skills, creativity, and critical thinking.  And you really don’t have to go far to enjoy the benefits, Mizejewski says. “The fact is, nature is all around us, sometimes literally out your back door. You don’t have to skip off the Yellowstone to have the experience.”
There’s also no rule that you have to rough it. Erin Doyon and her husband Greg of Great Falls, Montana, make it a point to take their 4 children out in their camper to enjoy the beauty that’s practically in their backyard, from early summer well into the autumn. Doyon says when they first started camping as a family, they tried the tent option. But between having to haul around a tent large enough for all 6 people, and being crowded when they were inside of it, it wasn’t that fun. “We decided we’re going to buy a used camper,” she says.
Now they have more space and sleep in comfort. Plus, Doyon prepares all of their food ahead of time so she’s not the camp cook for their entire outing. “I cook for 3 days before we head out. Everything is prepped and ready to go,” she says. When they’re out, she can relax and enjoy the time with the family.
The benefit of being out as a family is invaluable. “We can totally detach ourselves from responsibility,” she says. “We wake up in the morning and play games or ride bikes. We just really enjoy family time and doing nothing.”
When you’re camping, whether you’re roughing it in the backcountry in a tent, or stepping outside of your RV with the smell of breakfast cooking on the stove, the point is to experience the natural world.

Gender Differences in Depression

Picture
Men's symptoms are harder to recognize than women's.   Although women are hit harder by depression and are more vulnerable to it because of their biology, the illness is missed more frequently in men, Goldstein told Live Science.
Health care professionals and even family members may not pick up on depressive symptoms in men, so they can end up with severe depression before it's detected, she explained.

Bear breaks into house through window

Picture
(UPI) -- A California couple whose home security camera recorded a break-in by a hungry bear said the incident was not the first.
Lane Sykes and Carole Scofield said they had been away from their South Lake Tahoe house for under an hour last Wednesday when they returned with some friends and discovered the bear in their kitchen.
The couple reviewed security camera footage and discovered the bruin had climbed in through an open window that they had thought was too small to pose any sort of danger of wildlife incursions.
The video shows the bear rooting around for food and finding snacks including a package of M&M's, which the animal spills all over the kitchen counter.
The couple said a bear, which they believe to be the same animal, previously broke into their home last year by knocking down the front door.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - June 23

Teflon Don sentenced to life  1992

Mafia boss John Gotti, who was nicknamed the “Teflon Don” after escaping unscathed from several trials during the 1980s, is sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty on 14 accounts of conspiracy to commit murder and racketeering. Moments after his sentence was read in a federal courthouse in Brooklyn, hundreds of Gotti’s supporters stormed the building and overturned and smashed cars before being forced back by police reinforcements.
Gotti, born and educated on the mean streets of New York City, became head of the powerful Gambino family after boss Paul Castellano was murdered outside a steakhouse in Manhattan in December 1985. The gang assassination, the first in three decades in New York, was organized by Gotti and his colleague Sammy “the Bull” Gravano. The Gambino family was known for its illegal narcotics operations, gambling activities, and car theft. During the next five years, Gotti rapidly expanded his criminal empire, and his family grew into the nation’s most powerful Mafia family. Despite wide publicity of his criminal activities, Gotti managed to avoid conviction several times, usually through witness intimidation. In 1990, however, he was indicted for conspiracy to commit murder in the death of Paul Castellano, and Gravano agreed to testify against him in a federal district court in exchange for a reduced prison sentence.
On April 2, 1992, John Gotti was found guilty on all counts and on June 23 was sentenced to multiple life terms without the possibility of parole.
