Book review
Every Note Played book by Lisa Genova review by Judy Piper
If you read any of Lisa Genova’s books, you know they are about some medical condition. This one is about ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Richard, a world-
renowned concert pianist, is having trouble with his hands as he plays the piano. When diagnosed with ALS, he fears the loss of his fingers to strike the
correct notes. He is divorced, lives alone and fights against having help.
Eventually, he agrees to an aide who helps him with his personal upkeep. His ex-wife, Karina, is also a pianist and probably would have become well
known except for having a child who is now a freshman at the University of Chicago. She has avoided all contact with him until she finds out that he is ill as Karina is trying to find her path now that she is also alone. Through his illness, Richard and Karina try to reconnect.
This book will help you understand what person experiences when living with ALS and what a caregiver needs to do for the patient.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - June 2
Babe Ruth retires 1935
On this day in 1935, Babe Ruth, one of the greatest players in the history of baseball, ends his Major League playing career after 22 seasons, 10 World Series and 714 home runs. The following year, Ruth, a larger-than-life figure whose name became synonymous with baseball, was one of the first five players inducted into the sport’s hall of fame.
George Herman Ruth was born February 6, 1895, into a poor family in Baltimore. As a child, he was sent to St. Mary’s Industrial School for Boys, a school run by Roman Catholic brothers, where he learned to play baseball and was a standout athlete. At 19, Ruth was signed by the Baltimore Orioles, then a Boston Red Sox minor league team. Ruth’s fellow teammates and the media began referring to him as team owner Jack Dunn’s newest “babe,” a nickname that stuck. Ruth would later acquire other nicknames, including “The Sultan of Swat” and “The Bambino.”
Ruth made his Major League debut as a left-handed pitcher with the Red Sox in July 1914 and pitched 89 winning games for the team before 1920, when he was traded to the New York Yankees. After Ruth left Boston, in what became known as “the curse of the Bambino,” the Red Sox didn’t win another World Series until 2004. In New York, Ruth’s primary position changed to outfielder and he led the Yankees to seven American League pennants and four World Series victories. Ruth was a huge star in New York and attracted so many fans that the team was able to open a new stadium in 1923, Yankee Stadium, dubbed “The House That Ruth Built.”

Music Monday at Dansbury Depot
Doc Pappalardo was suckled by Pennsylvania Dutch wolves and rescued by itinerant Sicilian Stone-cutters who settled on the banks of the Delaware River. Doc was raised up there in the wilds of Shawnee-on- Delaware, home to a ridiculous number of famous people, including Jackie Gleason and Mr. Green Jeans, whose bass still travels with the band. Doc fondly remembers listening to the Grand Old Opry on his Grandmother’s gigantic Philco radio in his formative days, when everybody else was listening to do-wop and top forty hits. Multi-instrumentalists, The Renegade Ramblers are a loose tribe of musicians who delight in playing blues and traditional and original bluegrass music, with brief raids into Irish and Americana music.
Tonight we welcome David Sandt, Photographer, of Star Mountain Studio, as our featured artist! David's pictures are a visual testament to the beauty of the Poconos and near-by regions. Dave has charmed many visitors with his shows and many beautiful pictures hang in a multitude of houses and businesses throughout the area. Dave will be showing and selling his beautiful pieces of art inside the depot.
Supporting Those Who Serve
On the first Monday of every month, Lt. Col. (Retired) Dominick Nati, a former Army Air Corps pilot, visits Rep. Joe Emrick's Nazareth district office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Rep. Emrick truly appreciates the job he does with the men and women who serve and have served our country in giving them assistance with individual issues and answering their specific questions.
If you would like to make an appointment for June 4, please call (610) 588-8011 or (610) 746-5090. The office is located in the borough office building at 134 South Main St.

MEGA Sports Camp
Hey parents! Ready to drop a ton of fun right into your child’s summer? Then MEGA Sports Camp is right hosted by First United Methodist Church of Bangor is for you. The camp will be held Jun 18 - Jun 22 at 6:00pm at the Pennico Park in South Bangor.
First United Methodist Church in Bangor is offering kids entering kindergarten thru 5th grades one awesome time. “We want to give kids the chance to learn more about sports, discover character-building concepts, learn about God’s love, and have a whole lot of fun,” says Pastor Chris Hardy.
At MEGA Sports Camp, kids can participate in basketball and kickball (or sports basics for the little ones). It doesn’t matter if they’ve played all their life or just started yesterday, our camp helps improve their skills. All sorts of drills and practice games will get kids focused on the fundamentals that make athletes great. Plus, we create a positive and encouraging environment that pumps up their confidence and self-esteem.
Between sports sessions, coaches lead in songs and help kids experience inspiring sports and Bible stories to help character-building themes take hold in kids’ hearts. And most importantly, kids will discover God’s great love for them.
So come on over to Pennico Park in Bangor, hosted by First United Methodist Church. It starts on Monday, June 18th and lasts through Friday, June 22nd, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm each evening. For more information and registration check out our website at www.firstumcbangor.com.
