Flu Season Could Be Nasty
NEW YORK -- As the holiday season continues, the U.S. is also entering peak flu season. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, up to 650,000 people worldwide could die from complications of the flu. Earlier this month, 3-year-old Rami Ibrahim had a flare up of asthma, but he didn't improve with treatment. "He had a minor cough but he thought it was his asthma," said his mother, Dania Shaban. "So it wasn't anything that was shouting out this is the flu for him." The diagnosis was flu, and the virus was attacking his lungs, causing him to spend a week in intensive care. "He was sedated, he had a tube down his throat, he had a tube in his nose, he had three or four IVs," said Shaban. It's very early in the flu season but it's shaping up to be a nasty one. Texas is one of 23 states already seeing high flu activity, more than double the number from the week before. Dr. Mary Healy is an infectious disease expert at Texas Children's Hospital. "We've had more positive tests over the last couple weeks," said Healy. "So it looks like we're really starting to get into the season in earnest and that certainly seems to be the trend nationally as well." What concerns experts is the flu season that just concluded in Australia, which sometimes can preview the season here. Australia had its most severe flu season in five years, and the vaccine used there is the same one used here. It's believed that one of the strains covered, called H3N2, mutated, making the vaccine only 10 percent effective. "If you look at the CDC data, we don't have evidence that the virus has changed significantly," said Healy. "Hopefully we're not going to face the same situation." A vaccine takes months to make and scientists are looking at new ways of making it so when the virus mutates, they can quickly make a new one. In the meantime, the CDC recommends getting immunized, even if it only may provide a relatively small amount of protection. Weather Related Forecasts

Spotted Lanternfly Public Meeting
Nazareth, Pa. – The Spotted Lanternfly is an extremely invasive insect that affects gardens and landscape plants as well as important Pennsylvania commodities. This past fall, the quarantine for Spotted Lanternfly expanded to include thirteen counties in southeastern Pennsylvania. Penn State Extension is offering a class for interested individuals to provide the latest information regarding control of the Spotted Lanternfly and what the public can do to help. The event will be held at the Berks County Agricultural Center Auditorium, 1238 County Welfare, Leesport, PA 19533 on Thursday, January 25, 2018, 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This event is available to all members of the public and will include updates from Penn State Extension, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and Berks County Conservation District. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - January 2U.S.-Russia detente ends 1980 On this day in 1980, in a strong reaction to the December 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, President Jimmy Carter asks the Senate to postpone action on the SALT II nuclear weapons treaty and recalls the U.S. ambassador to Moscow. These actions sent a message that the age of detente and the friendlier diplomatic and economic relations that were established between the United States and Soviet Union during President Richard Nixon’s administration (1969-74) had ended. Carter feared that the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, in which an estimated 30,000 combat troops entered that nation and established a puppet government, would threaten the stability of strategic neighboring countries such as Iran and Pakistan and could lead to the USSR gaining control over much of the world’s oil supplies. The Soviet actions were labeled “a serious threat to peace” by the White House. Carter asked the Senate to shelve ratification talks on SALT II, the nuclear arms treaty that he and Soviet Premier Leonid Brezhnev had already signed, and the president called U.S. ambassador to Moscow Thomas J. Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. In 2018, Dominick Nati, an Army Air Corp pilot who has flown missions out of Fort Indiantown Gap, will be visiting Rep. Joe Emrick's Nazareth district office the first Monday of every month to discuss veterans’ issues with the men and women who serve or have served our country.
Since Rep. Emrick's district offices will be closed the first Monday in January (New Year’s Day), Dominick will be stopping by the Nazareth office on Friday, Jan. 5 from 10 am to 2 pm. If you wish to meet with him, please call (570) 897-0401 or (610) 746-5090 to schedule an appointment.

Roseto Ice Rink Opening
They say that everything happens for a reason. But what good could come from the exceptionally cold weather we have been experiencing lately? All it does is produce snow, ice and more ice.
When you think ice, however, you may wonder when was the last time that you went ice skating outside? If you can't recall or would like to ice skate, the Borough of Roseto has purchased and set up an outdoor ice rink located at the Roseto Ball Park.
You can access the rink through the main gate only off of Denisco street. If gate is closed the ice rink is closed.
It will open to the general public starting January 5th, weather permitting. It will be open Fridays from 5:00 - 8:00pm,
Saturday it will open at 9:00am -12:00 noon for ice hockey and 12:00 noon - 5:00pm for general skating.
The rink will also open on Sundays from 1:00 - 5:00pm. Weather permitting, the borough plans to open every weekend. There is no cost to come skate, so sharpen your blades and join us for some old fashioned fun this winter.

Learn how to snowshoe while learning the history of these helpful winter tools. If we don’t get any snow, we’ll focus on using trekking poles and hike in our boots. The hike will be about two miles, bring water and a snack. Wear waterproof boots and dress for the weather. Registration is required.

We’ll go for a hike in snowshoes, stopping along the way to talk about outdoor scenarios and how to prepare for them. If we don’t get any snow, we’ll hike in our boots. You will be asked to specify your weight range when registering; this is to determine what size snowshoe you will need.
8th Annual Snow Ball Dinner Dance
Families First will present their 8th Annual Benefit Snow Ball Dinner Dance on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm. The dance will be held at the Weona Park Recreation Center in Pen Argyl. Dinner will be provided by Just in Thyme and the music will be DJ Joe Franzo & Karaoke. There will be basket raffles and door prizes. The event is BYOB. Please dress casual. Tickets are $25.00 per person in advance and $30.00 at the door. You can purchase tickets by contacting Spring Shank - Pen Argyl High School, Kate Marsteller – Wind Gap Middle School, or Kelly Thomas – Plainfield Elementary. The event will be held at the Berks County Agricultural Center Auditorium, 1238 County Welfare, Leesport, PA 19533 on Thursday, January 25, 2018, 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This event is available to all members of the public and will include updates from Penn State Extension, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and Berks County Conservation District. This event is open to anyone interested in learning more about the Spotted Lanternfly regardless of home county and quarantine. Bring your questions and join us for discussions on the current status of this invasive insect, information on the quarantine, preparation for insect control in the 2018 season, and how individuals and communities can help stop the spread of this insect. Lunch and handouts are included.

Irish Tin Whistle Workshop
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs.
Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem.
Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle.
The class will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Life in Christ, 51 E. Hillmond St., Bethlehem. The cost is $30, and information and registration can be found at http://www.celticfest.org/irish_tin_whistle_workshop.

Other possibilities include the rare Golden Eagle, Common Goldeneyes, Pileated Woodpeckers and many other winter bird species. This is a great opportunity for photographers. Please dress for the weather, wear comfortable water-proof shoes and bring binoculars and lunch. There will be a stop for snacks and hot beverages along the way. Registration is required.
