Storm Drops 4.5 Inches of Snow .....by Larry Cory
A slow moving storm finally hit a higher gear overnight leaving the Slate Belt with 4.5 inches of snow. This brings our total for the 2017-18 winter season to 19.5 inches. Today's snow total is the second highest of the season with 6.5 inches snow on December 10 topping the list. This is also the seventh measurable snowfall of the season. That's the downside of the weather. On the upside, temperatures are expected to rise over the next week into the 40s. The forecasted high for Friday is 37, Saturday 47 and Sunday 45. Our days are also getting longer. Well, not the actual day, that's still 24 hours. But the length of daylight has increased to 9 hours and 40 minutes which is about 25 minutes longer than December 21, which was the day with the least amount of light. Most of the additional light is coming at the end of the day. Sunset on Decmber 21 was at 4:39, but is now at 5:03. Sunrise, however, is different. The latest sunrise didn't occur until January 7 at 7:25. Today was 7:22, meaning that we have only gained 3 minutes of additional light in the morning, however, the afternoons are now 22 minutes longer. By the end of January we will have gained about 50 minutes of daylight since the shortest day. Storm-Related Announcements....

Boston thieves pull off historic robbery 1950
On this day in 1950, 11 men steal more than $2 million from the Brinks Armored Car depot in Boston, Massachusetts. It was the perfect crime–almost–as the culprits weren’t caught until January 1956, just days before the statute of limitations for the theft expired.
The robbery’s mastermind was Anthony “Fats” Pino, a career criminal who recruited a group of 10 other men to stake out the depot for 18 months to figure out when it held the most money. Pino’s men then managed to steal plans for the depot’s alarm system, returning them before anyone noticed they were gone.
Wearing navy blue coats and chauffeur’s caps–similar to the Brinks employee uniforms–with rubber Halloween masks, the thieves entered the depot with copied keys, surprising and tying up several employees inside the company’s counting room. Filling 14 canvas bags with cash, coins, checks and money orders–for a total weight of more than half a ton–the men were out and in their getaway car in about 30 minutes. Their haul? More than $2.7 million–the largest robbery in U.S. history up until that time.
