"Reach Out and Help Someone"
Stroudsburg, PA – Sistah Chat Radio of Pocono 96.7, Pocono Alliance on behalf of the West End Food Bank, and the Women United Committee on behalf of the United Way of Monroe County have joined forces to “Reach Out and Help Someone!”. Since their inception, Sistah Chat Radio’s mission has been to inspire, enlighten and empower women to live healthier and more fulfilled lives. Deborah Cofer (“Mamma C”) stated that Sistah Chat Radio became involved because “our goal is to help listeners, particularly women, grow on every level of their lives, personal, professional, emotionally, physically and spiritually through the provision of enlightening information that is sound and solid.”
On Sunday, January 14 th from 1:00pm to 4:00pm all three organizations will be hosting a donation drive for the below listed items at Pocono Alliance located at 912 Main Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360. Upon arrival to the first floor of the building look for signs to the area where the collection is occurring. Lights refreshments will also be served.
Pocono Alliance on behalf of the West End Food Bank is requesting donations for new or gently used children’s coats along with gloves, hats and scarves for approximately 300 children have been identified that continue to be in need this winter. Boys and girls items are needed of all sizes. All items should be clean and in good condition.
The Women United Committee of United Way of Monroe County is requesting “Boxes of Valentines Love” for single mothers in the area. They are asking for a plastic box or shoe box filled with gift cards and items to pamper a single mother. Women United suggests items such as socks, hand warmers, scarves, gloves, hats, candy, lotion, soap, personal hygiene items, nail polish, make up, adult coloring books, journals, or puzzle books.

Roosevelt makes Grand Canyon a national monument 1908
On January 11, 1908, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt declares the massive Grand Canyon in northwestern Arizona a national monument.
Though Native Americans lived in the area as early as the 13th century, the first European sighting of the canyon wasn’t until 1540, by members of an expedition headed by the Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado. Because of its remote and inaccessible location, several centuries passed before North American settlers really explored the canyon. In 1869, geologist John Wesley Powell led a group of 10 men in the first difficult journey down the rapids of the Colorado River and along the length of the 277-mile gorge in four rowboats.
By the end of the 19th century, the Grand Canyon was attracting thousands of tourists each year. One famous visitor was President Theodore Roosevelt, a New Yorker with a particular affection for the American West.After becoming president in 1901 after the assassination of President William McKinley, Roosevelt made environmental conservation a major part of his presidency. After establishing the National Wildlife Refuge to protect the country’s animals, fish and birds, Roosevelt turned his attention to federal regulation of public lands. Though a region could be given national park status–indicating that all private development on that land was illegal–only by an act of Congress, Roosevelt cut down on red tape by beginning a new presidential practice of granting a similar “national monument” designation to some of the West’s greatest treasures.

Gift of Life Organ Donor Awareness
Bangor Woman Organizes Promo Night
Lisa Rigione of Bangor is a donor Mom. Her son Mike DeBiase was an organ donor and saved six lives when he passed away from a brain bleed in February, 2015. He was 23. Twenty Two people die everyday waiting for a transplant.
Lisa helped organize a Gift of Life Organ Donor Awareness Night to bring awareness to the importance of organ donation. She also volunteers and speaks for the Gift of Life. She was lucky enough to partner with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Hockey team for a night of awareness which will be held 7:05pm Saturday, February 17 at the PPL center in Allentown.

Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. Upon arrival to the first floor of the building look for signs to the area where the collection is occurring. Lights refreshments will also be served.

used children’s coats along with gloves, hats and scarves for approximately 300 children have
been identified that continue to be in need this winter. Boys and girls items are needed of all
sizes. All items should be clean and in good condition.
The Women United Committee of United Way of Monroe County is requesting “Boxes of
Valentines Love” for single mothers in the area. They are asking for a plastic box or shoe box
filled with gift cards and items to pamper a single mother. Women United suggests items such
as socks, hand warmers, scarves, gloves, hats, candy, lotion, soap, personal hygiene items, nail
polish, make up, adult coloring books, journals, or puzzle books.

On January 18th, A Clean Slate will launch a brand new Creative Drama Workshop series offering participants to creatively approach the New Year with an opportunity for reflection, exploration and gratitude. The series will run 4 weeks and will begin on Thursday 01/18/2018 from 7pm. – 9pm. The workshops will explore the themes, motifs and symbols of the play “A Wrinkle In Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. No acting experience necessary, just a willingness to jump in and have fun. Sign-ups will be taken up until January 8th.

Irish Tin Whistle Workshop
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs.
Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem.
Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle.

Join center educator Rick Wiltraut for this trip into the scenic Delaware River National Recreation Area in search of wintering Bald Eagles. Other possibilities include the rare Golden Eagle, Common Goldeneyes, Pileated Woodpeckers and many other winter bird species. This is a great opportunity for photographers. Please dress for the weather, wear comfortable water-proof shoes and bring binoculars and lunch. There will be a stop for snacks and hot beverages along the way. Registration is required.
