Hijab Solidarity Day Inauguration day marchALLENTOWN, PA Students, working people, religious, labor and community leaders will gather at 7th and Hamilton Streets in downtown Allentown at 2pm on Friday, January 20 for “Hijab Solidarity Day” – an inauguration day march, rally, and celebration of diversity.
The event has a dual purpose: •To publicly denounce proposals put forward by the President Elect that threaten the civil liberties of all and the civil rights and safety of Muslim-Americans, Latinos, immigrants, women, and members of the LGBTQI community. Proposals include establishing a Muslim registry, banning Muslims from entering the U.S., and rounding up immigrants for deportation. •To announce a positive program of local resistance including creation of a local Web of Support to interrupt harassment of persons from targeted communities, a continuing series of Community Dialogues to build relationships among diverse communities, and a Public Official Report Card process, assessing the positions and actions of local elected officials on issues of concern. Participants from all religious – and non-religious – backgrounds and walks of life will wear head scarves as a sign of solidarity with Muslim girls and women who have been attacked and harassed for wearing the traditional Muslim hijab head dress. “Events leading up to the election – and the statements and proposed policies of the incoming president have set a climate in our country that is hostile to women and minorities in general, and Muslim Americans, Latinos, immigrants, and Jews, in particular,” said Jude-Laure Denis, executive director of POWER Northeast, the organization spearheading the rally. “This is an opportunity to come together to begin creating a strong, local web of support for members of targeted communities. Hate crimes against the Muslim community have grown 67%, according to the latest FBI report ( http://cnn.it/2iCHfnT ) But to be clear, Muslims are not the only ones being targeted, hate crimes against Jews and African-Americans also spiked, by 9% and 8% respectively, last year. “We invite people of all faiths and genders to take part and to wear head scarves as a statement of support for our Muslim neighbors,” said Ms. Denis. “In this way we will say, "Not on our watch!" As we stand with our Muslim brothers and sisters, we reject racism and religious intolerance and insist that the truly American values of equality, fairness, inclusion and acceptance must prevail.” A growing list of religious and community leaders has endorsed the Hijab Solidarity Day, including ACLU of Lehigh Valley and many others.

GENEVA, Switzerland, (UPI) -- Here's a fever that can't be cured by more cowbell.
A Danish animal rights activist was denied Swiss citizenship after her repeated public criticism of cowbells, a popular tradition in the country. Nancy Holten has lived in Switzerland for 33 years and applied for Swiss citizenship. However, the request was denied after fellow residents in the village of Gipf-Oberfrick objected, labeling Holten's constant public complaints about cowbells annoying. In Switzerland, citizenship requests are decided by locals, not the Swiss government. Holten, 42, a vegan animal rights activist who has lived in Switzerland since childhood, argued the cowbells are harmful to bovine because they are too loud and heavy and should be outlawed. Her dislike of bells did not stop at bovine. Holten also complained about the noise of church bells ringing near her home early in the morning. The complaining appears to have taken its toll. After a village vote earlier this week, Holten's request was denied. It was the second time she has sought and been denied Swiss citizenship by her neighbors. "She annoys us and doesn't respect our traditions," local politician Tanja Suter said. Others defended Holten, saying her opinions shouldn't preclude her from becoming a citizen of a country where she's lived for a majority of her life. "Not liking cowbells or church bells is no reason to deny naturalization, because in Switzerland we have freedom of expression," village board spokesman Urs Treier told USA Today. But "if a person makes her criticism public, people may see it as rebellion against our traditions."

BAHS Marching Band Uniform Fund Drive The Bangor Area High School Marching Band uniforms, which are modeled after Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. After years of normal wear and tear, the uniforms must be replaced. The new uniforms will continue to use the same style.
The Slater Band Boosters have initiated a fund drive to support this effort. The Boosters will appreciate any donations, small or large, to this cause. Later we honor Brighid with a healing Fire ceremony, followed by our deeply bonding bonfire gathering with song, chants, and 'placing of cloths' for Brighid's Blessings. Then let off 'steam' from all that fire work with a pulsating drumming circle!

BAHS Drama Department Pancake Breakfast
On Saturday, February 18, from 8am to noon, at Bangor Area Middle School, the Bangor High School Drama Department will host the fourth annual pancake breakfast with the cast of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.” Classic characters, such as Belle, the Beast, and Mrs. Potts, will transport visitors to the French countryside as they welcome guests of all ages with music, food, and activities.
In addition to restaurant-quality food and top-notch service, patrons can take advantage of a special opportunity to have their photo taken with the princess, the beast, and the enchanted characters. After snapping a photo and filling their bellies, guests can play games and participate in other activities, all while enjoying musical performances from the cast of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”.
The breakfast will raise funds for the high school musical production of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”. Performance dates are: March 3, 4 & 5, 2017. Tickets for the musical will be available for purchase at the pancake breakfast or you can call 610-599-7011 x1001 for further information regarding tickets for the musical.
Tickets for the “Be Our Guest ” pancake breakfast can be purchased ahead of time by calling Sue Bina at 610-588-3041. Pre-purchased tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children 5 and younger (children 2 and younger eat free). At the door, adults will pay $7 and children will pay $5.

Hunter Education Classes
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is hosting a hunter training course on Saturday, March 4, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at East Bath Rod and Gun Club, Township Line Road, Bath. The course is required by law for all first-time hunters and trappers before they can purchase a license.

Allentown, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks are happy to announce their 2017 National Arena League (NAL) schedule. Featuring six home and six away games, the Steelhawks season opens at home on Sunday, March 19 th at 4pm against the expansion Dayton Wolfpack.
“After much anticipation are thrilled to be able to release our 2017 league schedule today,” stated Steelhawks General Manager Mike Clark. “The National Arena League is ready to kickoff its inaugural season, and we can’t wait to start our seventh year of play. Week one can’t come soon enough, and we look forward to seeing the Steelhawks faithful out in full force this season inside the PPL Center.” Additional schedule highlights include a Week Three matchup where the team will be making the long trip to Florida to take on the Jacksonville Sharks, former members of the AFL. Week Four brings a familiar opponent to the Valley; the Columbus Lions will be in the Hawks Nest for the Steelhawks second home game on April 9th. The Steelhawks closest rivals this year will be the Dayton (Ohio) Wolfpack and the High Country (North Carolina) Grizzlies, each of whom appear on Lehigh Valley’s schedule multiple times; LV faces Dayton four times – two home, two away, and High Country three times – one home, two away.
