ArtPop Comes to the Poconos
Stroudsburg – Did you ever wonder what happens to unused billboard space?
About 10 years ago, ArtPop founder, Wendy Hickey, a sales rep for Adams Outdoor Advertising came up with a wonderful solution - "Why not put art on unused billboard space and create a gallery for travelers on the road." Wendy was a board member of the Pocono Arts Council when she began a small pilot project in the Poconos before being transferred to Adams Outdoor in Michigan. Fast forward ten years and Wendy, now living in Charlotte North Carolina, continued to grow and expand the idea of art on billboards. Her vision - ArtPop as it is now known - is returning this fall to the Poconos. ArtPop's mission is "To Promote Local Artist's Work through available billboard space” and art can currently be seen on billboards in Charlotte, Peoria, Tampa and the Lehigh Valley. Please visit www.artpopstreetgallery.com to discover more about this great program. An open call for artists to participate in this program locally is now underway with a deadline of September 15, 2015. Submission guidelines are available from the Pocono Arts Council by calling 570-476-4460 or email [email protected] Further information on the program is available on www.artpopstreetgallery.com or by contacting Allen Lawlor at Adams Outdoor, [email protected]. Submissions should be sent to [email protected]. The Pocono Arts Council is a local arts service organization serving Monroe, Pike, Wayne, Lackawanna & Luzerne counties. The mission of the council is to build the community artistically and culturally by providing leadership, service and education - “Culture Builds Community.” Further information can be found by visiting its website, www.poconoarts.org. Rare Pink Dolphin Returns to Louisiana
Capt. Erik Rue of Calcasieu Charter Service first spotted the pink albino dolphin as a baby in 2007, but he said the aquatic mammal has returned to the Calcasieu River as a full-grown adult.
"We still see her swimming almost every day in the summertime. We've seen her a lot in the last few weeks. She looks happy and healthy," Rue told WGNO-TV.
Rue said the dolphin, dubbed Pinky by admirers, is "100 percent pink -- you know, like, the color of most dolphins bellies, but her whole body is pink."
Rue said he recently saw Pinky mating and he suspects she might now be pregnant.

Firemen Douse Christmas Pudding Fire
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue officials said a Barnstaple resident dialed the 999 emergency line about 7:45 p.m. Monday when a smoke detector went off on the property, and two engine crews responded to the home.
"On arrival the crews confirmed that this had been a small fire involving a Christmas pudding within a microwave," a fire and rescue spokesman said.
It was unclear whether the Christmas pudding had been splashed with brandy -- a traditional practice for the dish -- before being placed in the microwave.
"The damage was confined to the Christmas pudding itself, crews made the area safe and ventilated the property," the spokesman said.
HEALTH....
Boost Energy for Back-to-School Season
All the preparations can leave you feeling drained, but with the proper fuel you can ensure your family has the energy needed to ace each day.
Meal Plan
Kick off the year by creating a meal plan, which will help you stay organized, maintain a good diet and avoid repeat trips to the store. To simplify shopping and preparation, put together a list of favorite meals and snacks; then group according to common ingredients. Use a dry erase calendar, spreadsheet or online template to plot out menus one week at a time. Then, draft a grocery list and stick to it. This will help you pass up the chips and cookies for more energy-boosting options.
When you arrive home, immediately wash and prep produce for the week to make it that much easier to make nutritious meals all week long.
Start the Day off Right
Wholesome breakfasts provide a pick-me-up in the morning and throughout the day. Squeeze some oranges for fresh juice and a vitamin C boost. You can make a pitcher each weekend to last several days. Serve with homemade granola bars for a satisfying start to the day.
Smoothies are another easy breakfast. Whip up personalized flavors for each family member using the pre-set Smoothie and Power Blends programs on a Vitamix S50. This personal blender’s 20-ounce container becomes a good travel cup for school or work. Freeze a variety of individual servings of fruit and vegetable combinations into zip-top bags, blend with yogurt, milk or juice, and head out the door. Or use the machine’s 40-ounce container to make larger batches for the family to enjoy together. A nourishing smoothie provides the fuel necessary for a productive start to the day.
Mid-Day Motivation
Prep power-packed lunches for school and work by including protein, fruits and vegetables in an assortment of tastes and textures. You can use a premium blender to quickly prepare all kinds of dips and nut butters. Try homemade hummus with cucumber slices and carrot sticks and a side of strawberries and grapes. Or create fun finger foods, such as a peanut butter and apple wrap, or ants on a log -- almond butter and raisins on a celery stick.
Remember to stay hydrated. Water is fuel, and even mild dehydration can slow down body systems, resulting in fatigue. Carry a large container of water to drink throughout the day.
Dinner Delight
Continue beneficial eating habits at dinner. Add extra vegetables to your menu with a squash cheese sauce for a new take on whole wheat macaroni and cheese. Or bake a wholesome pizza using fresh pesto or a white bean purée as the sauce.
Instead of hitting the couch after dinner, complement healthful eating by taking a walk with your family. Exercise provides a natural endorphin boost, giving you extra motivation to maintain healthy habits.
With a little planning, a busy schedule won’t be an excuse for bad habits

The story is about a young girl on a trip to a local pumpkin patch and how her choice of a pumpkin ostracizes her from her peers.
Her producing team are all Pennsylvania natives. They decided to return to their hometown area to film because they love Pennsylvania and want to bring support to the local community. They are currently crowd-funding through the website Seed&Spark. They are 37% funded toward their goal of $11,000. They need to raise at least 80% of their goal or they lose all of their generous contributions. "Picked" is a story that anyone can relate to as it deals with the decisions we make as children and how they can affect the decisions we make throughout our lives. Her team and I want to share this beautiful story with the community and hope that you can help spread the word. Vendor Applications for Bangor Octoberfest

Ask The Doc........ Technology can be wonderful!
by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
garywilliamsdmd.com I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing. Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making. I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile. It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry. Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com. Slate Belt Senior Center
