Bangor Halloween Parade - Update
The Bangor Elks Halloween parade originally scheduled for October 13 has been changed to October 20. The theme for this year's parade is Back To The 50s.
The parade starts 7:00pm at the Bangor Bee Hive and ends at the Bangor Elks. All Children who participate in the parade are invited for free hot dogs & root beer at the Bangor Elks. Register for the parade with Keith Heard 610-588-1195.

United Methodist Women's Outreach
The East Bangor United Methodist Women's group, "Esther Circle," met on Wednesday, September 14th, in the social hall for a pajama party. Lee Pavan introduced Kim Townsend from Turning Point as the guest speaker. Turning Point is a program which supports victims of domestic abuse and their children by providing a safe home, counseling and other services. Over 70 pairs of pajamas and other items were collected and given to Turning Point. 25 women from Methodist churches in East Bangor, Bangor and Pen Argyl attended. Refreshments were served and a great time of fellowship followed. Many thanks to all of the women who supported this project.

The owner advised that between 10/1 and 10/2, unknown person(s) entered the barn and removed a 2004 Yamaha Grizzly 660 and a 2014 Polaris Ranger. 3 hunting rifles and various tools were also removed. On September 29th, SBRPD was called to the CVS in Wind Gap for a report of a retail theft. A person described as a W/M wearing a grey sweat shirt, blue jeans and a black baseball cap walked to the rear of the store. The male took out a plastic bag from his shirt and filled it with Oral B toothbrushes and Crest White Strips, totaling $364. The suspect fled in a Black Nissan Pathfinder with a PA registration plate. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Slate Belt Regional Police at 610-759-8517.

Jean Taylor has just become a widow. Her husband Glen has been fatally hit by a bus. But Jean is not sad; in fact, she is glad. Glen had been at the center of an investigation into the disappearance of a two-year-old child. As the investigation digs deeper, Jean finds out many dark and disturbing things about her husband. But he always had an excuse, it was an accident, he was being set up, etc.
The story starts in 2010, their present time, and goes back to 2006 when little Bella was abducted, then continues to bounce between 2010 and the ongoing investigation. Glen Taylor was arrested for Bella’s abduction but let go for lack of evidence. The Taylors live their lives with this crime hanging over their heads and it becomes increasingly harder all the time. They are hounded by reporters who camp out on their lawn and police constantly questioning them.
The story goes through many twists and turns as you wonder did he or didn’t he do it. Jean’s reactions don’t give anything away. Is she possibly in on it?
This book grabbed my attention from the very first chapter. I couldn’t put it down. I had to find out what had happened to little Bella. This is a great read for lovers of suspense and mystery.

THESSALONIKI, Greece, (UPI) -- A group of 430 ballerinas gathered in Greece to break the world record for the largest simultaneous stand en pointe.
Video recorded Saturday in Thessaloniki shows the dancers forming into lines before going up on their toes in unison to break the world record.
The dancers hold their positions for a few seconds to meet the record's requirements.
The attempt nearly doubled the previous record of 230 dancers going up en pointe at the same time in 2010 in New York.

Consumers nationwide are looking for new ways to reduce their energy use in their single-family homes, condominiums and apartments because using less energy helps save money and builds a more sustainable planet.
Fortunately, great strides have been made in efficiency for major appliances that would have been unimaginable decades ago.
One noticeable exception, until recently, has been clothes dryers. In 2012, the average electric clothes dryer used almost as much energy annually as the average refrigerator, dishwasher and clothes washer combined, according to a report from the National Resources Defense Council.
Here are a couple of things to consider that can help you select a sustainable dryer that also fits the design of your home.

This relatively new type of dryer is changing the energy efficiency equation. Ventless dryers recycle air within the unit, and offer an ideal way to help reduce energy consumption. They are also gentle on clothes, because they don’t heat the air as much as a traditional dryer.
There are two types: condenser and heat pump. The most efficient are the heat pump dryers, which use a refrigeration system to dry and recycle air before returning it to the drum. Consumers can choose from two Whirlpool brand dryer sizes that range from a compact model to a 7.4 cu ft HybridCare True Ventless Heat Pump Dryer.
Ventless dryers have another major benefit. They can fit into spaces beyond the laundry room -- such as closets in condominiums and apartments -- because there’s no need for a vent, just an electrical outlet. With many home designs moving from traditional layouts with a laundry room to open designs, this allows a washer and dryer to be placed virtually anywhere in the home.
The future of sustainability is often more simple than we envision. While smart technology sparks the imagination, valuable innovations will focus on the tried-and-true benefits of making appliances energy and water efficient, while maintaining a standard of high quality. “Failure has the power to break you or it has the power to push you forward,” says Scout Bassett, a U.S. Paralympian in track and field. “Use your experiences as an opportunity to reevaluate your goals and move forward from there.”
Having lost a leg early in her life in China, Bassett spent her early childhood in an orphanage before being adopted by an American family. She came to the United States at the age of seven just wanting to fit in. As a child she discovered a love of running and set off on a path to qualify for the Paralympic Games. In her first attempt in 2012, she came in dead last and did not qualify for the team. She briefly considered giving up her dream.
This year, she is relishing the progress she has made. As a member of Team USA who competed in Rio, she’s showing off her skills on a global stage and participating in Citi’s “#StandForProgress” program to inspire all Americans to think about the progress they want to achieve in their lives.
Bassett offers the following insights into goal-setting.
• “Progress” doesn’t always come in the form of a medal or an award. Sometimes progress means you have to take a few steps back, go back to the drawing board, see what worked and what didn’t, and find a way forward from there. Most of us experience setbacks, disappointments and even failures sometimes, but ultimately those moments can be the greatest motivators.
• The biggest struggles you face may not be the ones handed to you by fate or outside forces. They may be the battles you fight within. Look past your own inner voice discouraging you from your hopes and dreams. Developing mental fortitude is a continuous process.
• You can’t change the past but you can help write the future. Embrace and focus on what you have gained, not what you have lost.
• Don’t let naysayers hinder your progress or cause you to lose faith in yourself. The beauty of being underestimated is you have an opportunity to defy the odds. Use pessimism to motivate you.
• No one can do it alone, so don’t be afraid to rely on the help of others. Even at times when you don’t believe in yourself, there may be others who do.

Cash Prizes for Pumpkin Carving Octoberfest this year will be held at Bangor Memorial Park on Saturday and Sunday, October 15th (4pm to 8:30) and October 16th (4pm to 8pm). Groups are needed to enter in the themed, carved pumpkin display. Maybe you own a business and you have a group of employees that would like to get together to carve some pumpkins to enter in the contest. You can pick whatever theme you would like. There are tons of carving themes on the internet. There have been some interesting themes in the past such as Harry Potter, classic cars, Toy Story, Elvis, Peanuts, etc. Do you play a sport? Maybe your group wants to carve pumpkins to show support for that sport? The only cost to enter is that you have to buy your own pumpkins. NCC to Hold Annual Peace and Justice Conference
Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold its seventh annual Peace and Justice Conference, on Thursday, October 6, on its Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
The keynote address, “Challenging the Culture of Cruelty: Understanding and Defeating Race and Class Inequality in America,” which is also the Cohen lecture, will be given by Tim Wise, one of the most prominent anti-racist writers and educators in the United States, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall. He is the author of seven books, including the highly acclaimed memoir White Like Me: Reflections on Race by a Privileged Son. Copies of Wise’s new book, Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America, will be available at the College bookstore as well as on reserve at the NCC Library.

Bridges of Hope is a new program developed by the FaithNet Advisory Board of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and is designed to promote a deeper awareness of mental health issues within faith communities.
This presentation is being offered for all religious beliefs. It also recognizes the expression by the majority of those affected by mental illness of the importance of the role of their spirituality in their ability to cope with having one of these illnesses themselves or in caring for an ill friend or family member. Individuals, family members, and representatives of all faith communities are invited to participate.

Lukie's Fall Festival
The 13th Annual Lukie's Fall Festival will be held from 11-5 on Saturday, October 8th, 2016, at Weona Park, in Pen Argyl, PA. All of the proceeds from Lukie’s Fall Festival will be donated to Cure SMA. Cure SMA, is an nonprofit organization with the mission to find a treatment and cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Each Family and Friends work very hard and join together, with the local community to create a beautiful successful event. Each year the festival continues to grow beyond our imagination. Families come back year after year, to enjoy the Entertainment, Food, Games and to Support our Efforts to help find a Cure for SMA, In Memory of Lukie.

Quiet Valley’s 42nd Annual Harvest Festival
Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm celebrates their 42nd Annual Harvest Festival on October 8th and 9th, 2016 from 10am to 5pm both days. This year’s theme is “19th Century Tools, Technology & Trends”. When was hand spinning phased out in favor of the new, affordable fabrics available at the mercantile? What new, time saving kitchen gadgets were invented in the 1800s? What new advancements were shown at the 1893 World’s Fair? What were the biggest changes happening in the United States during this period? How did electricity, the telegraph and telephone affect the average person living on farms? We will showcase progress in farming in the 19th century with some of the equipment in Quiet Valley’s collection. This theme will let us explore some of the amazing innovations and improvements that took place during this incredible period in time.
In addition to demonstrations and displays dealing with the theme, there will be plenty of traditional skills and heritage crafts demonstrated such as spinning, weaving, broom making, scrapple making, apple butter making, basket making, candle making. There will also be plenty of folk entertainment, good country food, children’s activities, pumpkin decorating, a quilt raffle, horse drawn wagon rides, outdoor brick bake oven and much more.
See the New Jersey Frontier Guard as they portray French and Indian War soldiers. Explore the Civil War Encampment where the 142nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, Co. G Re-enactors will portray the drill and everyday life of soldiers during this important time for our nation. Visitors will enjoy this special glimpse into local history.
Children will enjoy a variety of activities such as pumpkin decorating, old fashion games, a hands-on heritage craft/activity area, the one room school presentation and pony rides.

The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their Annual Haunted Event entitled: “Dinner with the Dead” on Thursday, October 13th @ 7:00 PM. The following historical “ghosts” will share a phantom meal with guests. This year’s ghosts include alias “Jimmie Rose” who ran an extortion and prostitution ring in Bangor Junction and mysteriously disappeared in 1915 along with the “Unnamed Woman”who testified to the Black Hand activities and Jimmie Rose’s murder. They will be joined by “Major General John Sullivan”, the Revolutionary War hero for whom Sullivan’s Trail is named, “Mrs. Daisy Kent”, wife of US Representative Everett Kent, who attended presidential inaugurations in the roaring twenties, and “Mrs. Mildred Jago”, the kindly local lady who was good with numbers. Octoberfest this year will be held at Bangor Memorial Park on Saturday and Sunday, October 15th (4pm to 8:30) and October 16th (4pm to 8pm).
Groups are needed to enter in the themed, carved pumpkin display. Maybe you own a business and you have a group of employees that would like to get together to carve some pumpkins to enter in the contest. You can pick whatever theme you would like. There are tons of carving themes on the internet. There have been some interesting themes in the past such as Harry Potter, classic cars, Toy Story, Elvis, Peanuts, etc. Do you play a sport? Maybe your group wants to carve pumpkins to show support for that sport? The only cost to enter is that you have to buy your own pumpkins. A group of themed pumpkins should have at least 6 or more in their display.
There will be CASH prizes awarded for the top 3 best group of themed, carved pumpkins. Prizes range from $100 to $25.00. Please call Sherry Haycock at 610-588-6894 to register your group and theme.
In addition, our scarecrow making booth is in need of old stockings. Please save your old stockings (any color and size). You can drop them off at the Borough Building or to Sherry Haycock at The Little Corner Cafe.
Volunteers are needed to help in all aspects of the event from collecting tickets at booths, running booths, helping to set up and clean up the pumpkin displays and working in the concession stand.

Bangor High School's Fall Band Concert: Tuesday, October 18, 7:30pm at the M. Craig Paine Performing Arts Theater. Highlights are: Concert Band playing music by Sousa, Ticheli, and Erickson. Demonstrations and events include primitive archery, blacksmithing, black powder demos, children’s games, a scavenger hunt, a Market Faire of 18th & 19th century traders, and individual blanket traders. The Early American Craft Education Center, the John Joseph Henry House Museum, the Nicholas Hawk Log Cabin Workshop, and the Pennsylvania Longrifle Museum will all be open to the public during this event. Admission $5.00 with free on-site parking. Children 12 and under, JHS members, active duty military and scouts are free. Registration is not required. Slater Band Bingo and Tricky Tray
Bangor High School's Slater Band Bingo and Tricky Tray: Sunday, November 13 , Doors open at 11:00AM, Games start at 1:00PM at Blue Valley Farm Show. 20 games of bingo, tricky tray, special raffles, 50/50, and door prizes. Featured products from Longaberger, Coach, Vera Bradley, Thirty-One, Alex & Ani and Michael Kors. Refreshments available for purchase. Two choices for tickets: $20 includes admission and set of bingo cards; $25. ticket also includes sheet of tricky tray tickets and a ticket for the special drawing.
