Agile koala shows off parkour
skills in the trees
CANBERRA, Australia, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- A koala at an Australian rescue center bucked the stereotype of his species as lazy by showing off some parkour skills in the trees.
The HKPS Koala Care and Rescue group posted a video to Facebook showing how Mason the koala earned the nickname Jumping Jack Flash.
The video shows the marsupial jumping from tree to tree like a parkour master.
The center said Mason shows a lot of energy for a species known to sleep up to 18 hours per day.

Video games to big screen reboots
(BPT) - Every decade gets two moments in the sun it seems - when the years actually occur, and when they're fashionably retro. In the twenty-teens, it looks like everything 90s is hot again.
The influence of the 90s is showing up virtually everywhere in pop culture in 2016, from reboots of movies and TV series that were hugely popular 20 years ago, to fashions that evoke the grunge era. The trend isn't just popular among older millennials who remember the decade. Nineties style is being embraced by 20-somethings, teens and even children who are too young to recall the 90s or weren't even born until after 1999.
Nostalgia can be a great way to bridge the gaps between generations, especially as kids discover updated versions of pop culture elements their parents who lived through the 90s loved. If you're a child of the 90s, here are some retro experiences you can share with your kids this summer:
Video games
While some video game characters that have been around since the earliest days of console games are familiar to kids of all ages, others are just being rediscovered by today's young gamers. Crash Bandicoot ruled the 90s gaming scene as one of the coolest, most fun platform games of the decade.
First introduced to the gaming public in 1996, Crash jumped, ran and spun his way through more than a dozen games that sold millions of copies worldwide. Now, he's back in the newest game in the Skylanders franchise, Skylanders Imaginators. Skylanders Imaginators gives players the freedom to unleash their imagination and create their own Skylander using immense possibilities available in the game, including appearance, powers, abilities, names, catchphrases, musical themes and much more.
No Crash game would be complete without the ability to jump on TNT Crates to blow them up or collect the Bazooka Crate to get a rocket launcher. Crash is back in ways that will appeal to hardcore fans as well as introduce him to a new generation of gamer. Parents and kids alike will enjoy experiencing his unique and quirky personality both as a fully playable Skylander Sensei character and brand new toy. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who first made it to the big screen in 1990, are back this summer, too. Their rebooted look and approach aims to appeal to both parents who grew up watching the original TV series and their kids who are discovering the heroes on a half shell for the first time.
Other 90s screen hits that are in the works for reboots include "Lethal Weapon" and Stephen King's "It."

(BPT) - For pet owners and their four-legged friends, interacting with other dogs provides great opportunities for exercise and socialization. Whether it's playing at the dog park, hiking through the woods, strolling around town or making new friends at doggy daycare, these activities can improve your dog's mental and physical well-being. They can also put your dog at risk for exposure to health threats.
An ounce of prevention...
"We all love getting out of the house with our furry friends but it's important to remember that serious danger lurks in the grass, community water bowl or, if you travel with your dog, in another city," advises Julia Szabo, pet lifestyle expert. "With the right knowledge, advice from your trusted veterinarian and some simple preventive measures, it's easy to keep your dog happy and healthy."
What pet owners need to know to protect their dogs
* Ensure your dog's vaccinations are up to date.
* Always discuss your pet's lifestyle with your veterinarian to identify potential health risks and preventive measures.
* Remember to mention travel if your dog goes on the road with you, as other areas of the country may represent different health threats than what you face at home.
* Keep your pet away from wild animals, as they often carry disease, and don't allow your dog to drink from unclean water sources given that certain diseases can be spread there.
* Check regularly for ticks, which will help reduce the risk of disease transmission. Lyme disease, for example, can impact your pet's health, as well as your own.
* Fleas don't just live on your pet; they also live in your home. Vacuuming thoroughly can kill fleas and remove their eggs, helping you stop infestations. After vacuuming, seal the vacuum bag in a garbage bag and discard it in an outdoor trash container.
"Fleas and ticks are year-round hazards in many areas of the country, so it's critical to talk to your veterinarian about choosing the right product to protect your pets from these parasites and keep them out of homes," recommends Szabo. "BRAVECTO (fluralaner) is the only oral chew to deliver flea and tick protection to dogs for up to 12 full weeks. Bravecto kills fleas, prevents flea infestations, and kills ticks (black-legged tick, American dog tick, and brown dog tick) for 12 weeks. It also kills lone star ticks for 8 weeks."

You can get the flu but did you know your dog can as well? It's called canine influenza (CIV) - or dog flu - and cases of it have been popping up all over the country. In fact, canine influenza has impacted dogs in more than half the country - just since March 2015 - and new cases are being diagnosed every week.
There are two strains of canine influenza present in the dog population - H3N8 and H3N2, the latter is an Asian strain of CIV and is brand new in the United States. Because CIV is so contagious, infection can spread quickly among social dogs.
Vaccinating for both strains of CIV and minimizing exposure to potential risk factors are critical to protecting your pet.
Know your dog's risk. Does your dog:
* Play at dog parks?
* Visit doggie day care?
* Board or stay at a pet hotel?
* Visit a groomer?
* Attend dog shows or other social events with dogs?
* Greet other dogs during walks?
"I've seen the devastating impact of CIV first hand - both on a dog's health and the emotional toll it takes on owners," said veterinarian Natalie Marks, DVM, and co-owner of the Blum Animal Hospital in Chicago. "When CIV H3N2 broke in our area, we were seeing upwards of 15 cases a day at times and were scrambling to stop the spread of this very contagious disease. Now we know what we are dealing with and are able to protect at-risk dogs through vaccination and other measures. I strongly recommend that pet owners with dogs that are social and regularly commingle with other dogs speak to their veterinarian now about what is right for their pet and to fully understand what puts a dog at risk for CIV."

After years of normal wear and tear, the uniforms must be replaced. The new uniforms will continue to use the same style.
The Slater Band Boosters have initiated a fund drive to support this effort. The Boosters will appreciate any donations, small or large, to this cause. The names of contributors will be acknowledged in concert programs during the 2016-2017 school year. Bangor High School's Fall Band Concert: Tuesday, October 18, 7:30pm at the M. Craig Paine Performing Arts Theater. Highlights are: Concert Band playing music by Sousa, Ticheli, and Erickson. Learn about bat biology, the species of bats found in Pennsylvania, and how you can help bats in your area. Aura will also give an update on White Nose Syndrome in the state. Spooky Days at Quiet Valley Farm
At Spooky Days on the Farm, held at Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm on Friday October 28 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Saturday October 29 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Sunday October 30 from 1:00 to 5:00, take a tour of our historic farm and enjoy a look at the stranger side of Quiet Valley. During the daytime it will be more family focused with some not so spooky ghost stories. Also, learn about Halloween Creatures – Facts & Fiction, Halloween songs, and take a horse-drawn wagon ride & pony rides (weather permitting). There will be a children’s craft area and some light refreshments available.
After dark things will get spookier as guests can visit the Hag in the Woods, if they dare, and also help solve a “murder” that took place on the farm. You can also visit the Halloween Creatures – Facts & Fiction area at night.

Williams Will Speak on Bloom House
The East Bangor United Methodist Community Church welcomes Ellis Williams as guest speaker at the 9:15 a.m. worship service on Sunday, October 30th. Ellis will be speaking about his efforts with Bloom House, a recovery house for women. Based on the successful “Thistle Farm” model that began in Nashville, TN, Bloom House helps women in recovery from addiction regain a healthy life and healthy engagement with the community. NCC to Hold Youth Chess Tournament
Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold its annual Youth Chess Championship, for children ages 18 and under, on Saturday, November 5, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at College Center, second floor. The college is located at 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
Participants will play five rounds in unrated and rated sections. Trophies and prizes will be awarded as well as random prize drawings.

Photography Exhibit to Take Place at NCC
Trustom Pond, an exhibit of stunning photographs of the Trustom Pond national wildlife preserve in Rhode Island by John Hafey, will be exhibited November 1 through December 16 in the gallery of Communications Hall, Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township. An artist’s reception will take place on Nov. 11, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the gallery.
According to a review by the New York Times, Hafey’s photographs achieve “effects akin to those of exquisitely wrought aquatints.”
