It is in effect from 7:00 PM this evening until midnight on Sunday night. Winds, west northwest at 15 to 30 mph with gusts of 40 to 50 mph are most likely this evening with and following the passage of a strong cold front and Sunday during the daylight hours. The strong wind gusts may bring down tree limbs and utility lines. Scattered power outages are possible. The strong winds may make driving difficult especially for those operating a large vehicle. Drought Warning In Effect Northampton, Carbon, Lehigh and Monroe counties are now under a drought warning. Residents and businesses, particularly in central and eastern counties, should use water wisely and follow simple water conservation tips to ease the demand for water. Citizens are encouraged to voluntarily reduce their water use by 10-15 percent.
Data from the Commonwealth drought monitoring network shows dry conditions persisting in the middle of the state and lack of precipitation in the eastern part of the state have deepened precipitation deficits, resulting in extremely low stream flow and groundwater levels, particularly in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas in the Delaware River Basin. The Department of Environmental Protection encourages all citizens to take these steps to reduce their water use:
SLATE BELT WEATHER NOVEMBER 19TODAY - A chance of showers, mainly after 4pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 64. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. TONIGHT - Rain showers before 4am, then a slight chance of snow showers. Low around 35. West wind 9 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. by Larry Cory
Pen Argyl seemed that they were always just a play short of gathering the momentum to beat Notre Dame of Green Pond for the second time this year in a game played Saturday BASD Stadium. After all, the Knights had laid a convincing 35-14 win on the Crusaders earlier this year and it appeared as though it wasn’t if, but when that play would come. With the District XI AAA championship on the line the Knights had plenty of incentive. After the opening kickoff, the Crusaders started in Knights’ territory at the 46 which didn’t bode well. But consecutive sacks by Tanner Barr and Dawson Hughes and a penalty gave Notre Dame a third-and-forever forcing a punt which looked good for the Knights, but was only a preview of what was to come. For much of the first half the teams traded punts. On one occasion Austin Heisler’s 13-yard run gave Pen Argyl a first down and hope that the Knights' vaunted running game was about to emerge. But it was not to be. Midway through the second quarter, it was the Crusaders that broke through. Notre Dame’s Cole DeFranco completed passes of 10,11 and 22 yards in a drive that carried to the Knights’ seven. Mitch Daniel soon scored on a short run for a 7-0 lead with 6:17 to play in the first half. Later, Pen Argyl’s Christian Scott intercepted a DeFranco pass giving Pen Argyl life at the Crusaders’ 33. A few plays later, Logan Sterner took a pitchout from Logan Ruppert for a gain to the 14 and a first down. However, Notre Dame returned the favor picking off a pass in the end zone intended for Joey DePaolo that could have tied the game. Still, the Knights’ went into halftime only trailing 7-0 and knowing that one score ties the game. Daniel, however, ran 61 yards early in the third quarter putting the Crusaders up 14-0. Down two scores, the Knights’ got one back when they drove 80 yards with short runs and a 36-yard touchdown pass from Ruppert to Nick Guerro, cutting the lead to 14-7. Moments later, however, a 76-yard touchdown pass from DeFranco to Jon Moran put Notre Dame in control and on their way to a 28-7 win and the District Championship. Jon Bauer posted a video to YouTube he said was recorded by a friend on a United flight Friday morning from San Francisco to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Bauer said the passenger began to film just after the pilot asked passengers to refrain from discussing President-elect Donald Trump or other hot-button political issues while in the air. "I understand everybody has their opinions; that's fine," the captain says over the plane's speaker system in the video. "If you support him, great. If you don't, I understand. However, we're out here to go to Puerto Vallarta, supposed to be having a good time, and what I do ask is that as people we have the common decency to respect each others' decisions and to get along on this three hour and thirteen minute flight so that we can have a good time when we get down there. Nobody wants to argue, nobody wants -- nobody is going to change their minds by arguing. And let's keep our opinions to ourselves on this particular matter at this particular time. If there's anyone that has a problem with this, that needs to vent or rant or rave -- there's another flight tomorrow. You're not going to be on this one. I hope that's clear." The uploader said the pilot's speech was inspired by an altercation moments earlier between a white male passenger and a black female passenger. Bauer wrote the man said something "racist" related to Trump's election and "being glad to have kept his guns," causing the woman to "cry and freak out." "The individual that said what was said to the African American lady DID apologize to her after the crew separated them on the flight," Bauer wrote.
Health...Improving & Protecting Well Water |(NewsUSA) - Water wells provide an excellent source of good-tasting, safe drinking water for millions of Americans, but for those with water quality problems, most such issues are easily addressed.
A key to improving water quality is knowing the basics about water testing, well maintenance, water treatment, and groundwater protection, says the National Ground Water Association (NGWA). Water testing 101 Unlike public water systems, private well owners are responsible for testing their own water. NGWA recommends well owners test annually for bacteria, nitrate, and anything of local concern. Most county health departments do some water testing, and many well owners are within reasonable distance of a drinking water testing lab. Groundwater contaminants of local concern can be naturally occurring, such as arsenic, or manmade, such as chemicals or heavy metals from industrial or waste sites. The county health department or an area drinking water testing lab are good places to start to find out what might be of local concern. Designed specifically for household well owners, the NGWA website www.WellOwner.orgcontains more practical information about water testing. Well maintenance Modern, drilled wells are closed systems to keep bacteria and other external contaminants out of the well and the groundwater. But poor maintenance can result in well system breaches, allowing contamination to enter. Well owners should get periodic inspections of their well systems to catch any maintenance problems before they threaten water quality, says NGWA. Water treatment Home water treatment systems are available at a cost within reach of most well owners. But one size does not fit all, so it is important to match the treatment system to the specific need. Well owners should have their drinking water lab test results in hand when considering water treatment to make sure a system is a good fit. Groundwater protection Groundwater quality can be affected by contamination in the vicinity of the well. So well owners should be on guard for potential contamination sources such as animal or human waste from animal enclosures or failing septic systems, the improper storage or application of chemical products, and improper disposal of hazardous household substances. Visit www.WellOwner.org to learn more about water testing, well maintenance, water treatment, and groundwater protection. Environment...Go Green and Save Green with a High-Efficiency Water Heater(NewsUSA) - As energy costs rise, the "green" movement and conservation efforts have become popular topics. Energy-saving recommendations appear daily in the media, and consumers are being offered subsidies or state and federal tax credits to encourage the purchase of more efficient appliances. However, many homeowners fail to consider their water heater when it comes to going "green."
Although today's water heaters are expected to operate for an average of 13 years, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends shopping for a new water heater if your current unit is more than seven years old. This allows an adequate amount of time for homeowners to research and select a water heater that best meets their needs instead of waiting until their heater breaks down and selecting the cheapest quick fix for cold showers. Consumers are increasingly turning to high-efficiency water heaters when replacing older units or during remodeling and building projects. While these models may cost more initially, savings in water and energy usage continue throughout the lifetime of the appliance, offsetting the price difference. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that these units use 10 to 50 percent less energy, benefits to both your budget and the environment. A recent study by the Gas Technology Institute simulated the residential performance of high-efficiency water heaters and conventional units. The Vertex from A. O. Smith, a hybrid, gas-condensing, residential unit incorporating tank-type and tankless technology, provided the best overall performance at average and high-volume hot water usage, which is the consumption of 64-gallons or more per day of hot water. Endorsed by long-time environmental champion Ed Begley Jr. of the HGTV series "Living With Ed," the Vertex provides sufficient quantities of hot water for shower after shower and operates at 90 percent thermal efficiency. Additionally, it is designed to meet the demands that modern lifestyles require. "Using more efficient combustion to produce hot water at lower operating costs and 90 percent thermal efficiency, the Vertex is a good choice for customers who want to save energy without skimping on hot water," said David Chisolm, A. O. Smith Water Heater brand manager. For more information on the A. O. Smith Vertex model, visit hotwater.com/resources/energy-star-qualified-products/.
