Facebook's Halloween Emojis
Blasted as Inappropriate

Facebook's reaction emojis have switched temporarily to a Halloween theme, but it's a bit too cute for a lot of people, who have taken to Twitter and other social media outlets to put a frowny-face on it.
In February, Facebook added emojis as an option when you "like" a post, recognizing that it's inappropriate and limiting to restrict the only possible reaction to a "like." Now the choices run beyond to graphical representations of "love," "Haha," "wow," "sad" and "angry." Through the holiday, instead of plain emoji faces, they are a witch, a ghost, Frankenstein and a pumpkin.
The change is retroactive on all posts ... so it becomes problematic when a teary-eyed Frankenstein's monster shows up on the post about your grandpa dying last week. Or a surprised ghost on a friend revealing something personal.
A few Twitter users had a helpful suggestion for Facebook that could have come in handy.
Of course, not everyone was upset ...
Like, love or hate them, emojis are here to stay. The Museum of Modern Art in New York City just acquired the original 176 pictographs made by Shigetaka Kurita for telecom company DoCoMo in 1999 to allow weather forecasts and convoluted formal language to be condensed down to a single character or two – for texting.
Asked by NPR's Robert Seigel about the significance of the acquisition on Friday, senior MoMA curator Paola Antonelli said "It is hard to overstate it. I mean if you think about it, we cannot live without emojis today. We've become used into condensing our thoughts and our kind of emotions in them."
The "humble masterpieces" join Pac-Man and other graphics in the museum's permanent collection, recognized as important items of design. The emojis will soon be displayed in the museum's lobby.
What about modern emojis like Facebook's wistfully moist Frankenstein? Will they make the museum's collection?
"Maybe one day, and it depends on which ones," Antonelli said.

5 Steps to Reshape Your Life

(BPT) - Time to reflect back on 2016 and set your sights on 2017. How did the year progress, and what did you accomplish? Maybe your goals included: A new promotion, a new car, a bigger house, better health or more meaningful relationships. Did they happen? Has that time come to raise the bar and make a fundamental change?
At first glance it may seem impossible, but nothing changes unless you take control. Maybe 2017 is the year you start living life more on your own terms - and start today by employing these five tips:
* Live a life that is true to you. Wrestle with this one. Dig deep. Is it work? Then make passion for that work front and center. Is it skill building? Then tackle an online class in a skill you need, or just want to explore. Is it where you live, or who you are sharing life with or want to share it with? Stare it down and chart one bold step toward change. The biggest regret at the end of life's journey is abandoning your dreams. And for most people it's just pure fear that they weren't good enough, so they "turtle shell" up. Stop. No retakes. One mantra: Live Life Now. Repeat: This is Your Life. Find what is true to you and take one tangible step.
* Measure your time and where it is spent. Time is like the sand in the hourglass of life. Once it's gone, it's gone. Manage it like money. Every person walking this planet has the same exact number of hours in a day. Think of it as currency. How are you spending it? Seriously, take out the pen, paper and write down for one week how that most precious commodity was spent. Then change the allocation and budget time toward accomplishing that change you want, and maybe even desperately need. Own your hour glass of life and take control.
* Focus on your people. Ask yourself a tough question: Who are the people you care about most? Who do you impact, and who impacts you? These are the people that matter most in your life. Don't be afraid to shift the balance of your time in their favor. You'll be a better friend, and you'll inherently feel stronger and more impactful. Your support network grows stronger, as do you.
* Feel good with what you wear. This may seem contrite, but what you toss on that skin of yours not only speaks volumes about you, but also puts you into a certain mindset. If clothes make the man, what do yours say about you? Change some items in your wardrobe and feel good about what you wear. For example, the Madda Fella menswear clothing line projects the chill vibe of Key West, yet works well in the boardroom or out on the boat.
* Find your inspiration point. What place inspires you? Where is that one spot in the world that motivates you above all others? For Madda Fella CEO and founder Michael Louden, it is Key West. "When I am there, in the sun, in this gorgeous slice of the world, I change perspectives... see a bigger world." he says. "You owe it to yourself to do something meaningful with your life, to make a difference." Find your place. You'll find it is just what you need to recharge your batteries, revive your spirit and strengthen you.
The holidays are a wonderful time to bring into focus the year ahead. Don't be afraid to think big and to start now. Set the ground work for change today and you'll make 2017 your most legendary year yet.

How Small Businesses Can Capitalize on this Holiday Shopping Season

(BPT) - For entrepreneurs and small businesses owners, the holiday season offers an incredible opportunity to boost sales and increase the bottom line. Just like how the early bird gets the worm, starting holiday promotions early will position your business for optimum growth. Polishing your online identity, optimizing marketing opportunities and engaging in positive customer relations are key strategies for boosting profits. It may be the season of red and green, but businesses that take advantage of these expert tips will be better positioned to see a lot of numbers in the black.
Email marketing tips
The most essential step in creating effective holiday marketing emails is to start early. In fact, 2015 email data from GoDaddy shows that it's best for companies to get a head start on their email marketing campaigns as early as November. The days with the highest open rates before Christmas were during the first week of November, specifically Nov. 2. Even if those dates have passed, starting ASAP can help boost traffic and sales.
"Black Friday and Cyber Monday might seem like the perfect days to send promotional emails, but small businesses should proceed with caution," says Eric Gilbert, director of GoDaddy Email Marketing. "With higher sending volume comes lower email open rates. Our advice to our customers is twofold. First, get a head start on your holiday campaigns by sending before the peak shopping days arrive. And second, be sure to write crisp, compelling subject lines to help stand out in the inbox."
In creating an effective email, consider providing valuable information and useful tips rather than straightforward sales copy.
Shab Sadeghi, founder of Shabbella, a lifestyle brand for women, uses GoDaddy Email Marketing to stay in touch with her customers throughout the holiday season.
"I like to share style tips on how my customers can wear Shabbella products multiple ways throughout the season," says Sadeghi. "In the past, I've provided beautiful gift boxes with orders during the holidays. I love to give back to my customers, plus everyone loves gifts!"
Another way to increase email marketing efforts is to send personalized emails. Personalized emails improve click-through rates by 14 percent and conversion rates by 10 percent, according to Aberdeen Group.
Social media tips
Keeping active on popular social media platforms helps brands engage with their customers and influence purchasing decisions. What's more, 51 percent of people will use social media to get gift ideas, according to astatistica survey.
In addition to staying active, give your social efforts a holiday makeover with a few new strategies. For example, music is a huge part of how people interact during the holidays. Share popular holiday songs and encourage your audience to do the same.
Next, go for the emotional response. Heartwarming stories of generosity, charity and creativity abound during this time of year and tend to get a lot of play on social media.
In addition, focus on the entertainment value over the sale. The holidays, while joyful, are often filled with stress. Giving your users a break from the madness with a funny holiday-themed image or video will help them associate your brand with more than just your product.
Finally, make social interactive. Respond in a timely manner to user questions and comments. It will help build your brand reputation and leave a positive impression on your audience.
Storefront and website tips
Whether customers are visiting in person or virtually via a website, you want to give them an easy-to-navigate experience and plenty of purchasing options that meet their holiday shopping needs.
First, categorize items as gifts on your website. For example, "gifts for your husband" or "gifts for kids." Reflect this messaging in product copy and consider writing blogs that support gift ideas for specific audiences. Additionally, promote the upsell by offering packages of products and/or services in bundles.
Second, hire a web developer and graphic designer to spruce up your website to reflect the essence of the holidays. Alternatively, use a DIY website builder that's affordable and easy to use like GoDaddy. For physical stores, tasteful holiday decor can enhance the ambience and get shoppers in a festive state of mind.
Finally, for brick-and-mortar purchases, consider offering complimentary gift wrapping. For online purchases, provide free shipping when a certain amount is purchased.
With each day there's another opportunity to upgrade your holiday marketing strategies, but you must start now. With these tips, you'll have an edge on the competition.
