BAHS STAR Award Recipients 2016 The Bangor High School Star Awards are given annually to a student who has exhibited either classroom achievement and/or contributions to the school district or society that go above and beyond the classroom. Students are nominated for this award by their teachers, administrators, or other interested parties, and are chosen by a committee of alumni for this honor.
This year's recipients are: Rachel Bush: Rachel has been an honor student throughout her high school career and is ranked at the top of her class. Last year she received the Horvath Science Award, presented by the Alumni Association for a student who excels in the field of science. Although her academic achievement alone might merit a STAR Award, Rachel was nominated for this award by Mark Hopstetter, high school physical education teacher, for her work with his adaptive physical education class where she helps students with varying disabilities. She earns no credits for this, and according to Mr. Hopstetter, “She shows a true caring and compassion for these students, putting them first before her own needs.” He says they smile and look forward to seeing Rachel every day because she encourages and motivates them. She has managed to get them to try new things that they would not try before she joined the class. It is for her caring and compassion for these students that she is receiving this award. Jane Miller: Jane was nominated for this award by her teacher, Scott Morro, who says, “Jane is friendly, respectful, funny, helpful, and responsible beyond her years. Her positive attitude makes her a role model for her peers and anyone who is struggling with a challenge. She has many accomplishments, but her future as a leader is even more promising. Jane never lets her Type I diabetes get in her way.” Her activities include soccer, ski club, and field hockey. Most recently she played basketball on the team that won the Community Basketball League Championship. This spring she tried out and was selected to be a member of the middle school cheering squad. Jane, who is also very artistic, has won the Judges Choice Award at the Tott’s Gap Art Institute, and she sings in the school choir and the select choir. Jane, who was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at an early age, has been involved with her family in raising money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help find a cure. So far, “Team Jane” has raised over $15,000 for this endeavor. It is for her leadership, perseverance, positive attitude, and love of life that Jane is receiving this award. Kevin Reinert, a 61-year-old retired Air Force Colonel, returned to the 18th hole at the Starmount Country Club in Greensboro for the first time since he was struck by a car on the course on Oct. 6, 2015. "I've had better scores on a golf course, but never a better time on a golf course," he told Fox 8 of his return to the course. Reinert's hobby took a nightmarish turn when he was struck by a car driven by Isaiah Fox police said was in the middle of a crime spree. He suffered severe ankle injuries, a broken femur and broke both knee caps requiring several months of recovery. While not fully healed from his injuries, Reinert decided to take to the course and finish his game as a symbolic milestone on his road to recovery. "My knees are killing me," he said. "But I've never been better in my life." His son Phillip and daughter LeeAnne accompanied Reinert at the course for his triumphant return. "I told my dad I wanted to be there the first time he went back on the golf course," Phillip said. "It was so emotional watching him get over the physical and mental hump." "I've been looking forward to this day for seven months," LeeAnne said. "This is one of the best days of our lives for my family." Reinert credited his daughter and his wife Jean, who are both nurses, for assisting in his recovery. "You don't get through this by yourself. It's take a lot of medical professionals, family and friends," he said. Following the completion of his round Reinert said he felt some closure about the issue and expressed he would be willing to forgive Fox under the right circumstances. "As far as I'm concerned, I'm back," he said. "I think I will be able to forgive him once he shows some contrition, perhaps he will do that in a court of law. I have no contact with Mr. Fox between now and then, so I don't know if he's sorry or not."
ParentingTurning Travel Time Into Learning Time![]() (NewsUSA) - With many parents making plans to get out of town this spring, it's the perfect time to introduce fun toys that can turn a road trip or visit to Grandma's house into a learning opportunity.
Whether you're playing peek-a-boo, singing nursery rhymes or reading a book to your little one, experts suggest that learning through play is imperative to a child's development. "Engaging children in play at an early age is incredibly beneficial to their physical and mental development, but it's important that they're getting the right kinds of interaction," said Dr. Lise Eliot, early brain development expert and member of the expert panel at VTech, a world leader in interactive learning toys for all ages. To help create the right toy for every age, VTech works closely with doctors such as Eliot, as well as its expert panel of early childhood education and development experts to ensure its toys help children meet important milestones. The result is an extensive range of more than 100 baby, infant and preschool learning products that cater to each child's unique age and stage. "Learning begins at birth, and babies absorb much more than we realize from their moment-to-moment interactions with the world around them," said Dr. Eliot. "As parents strive to do what's best for their child, they can introduce activities that help him or her learn through play. Babies are strongly motivated to reach developmental milestones all by themselves, and toys in VTech's baby line can encourage them, make learning fun and grow with your little one over those important early years." To help discern which toy is right for your child, VTech has taken the guesswork out of the decision with its easy-to-follow milestones guide. The recommendations include some toys that are great for travel, such as:
Health...Mother Would Like This Prenatal Vitamin![]() (NewsUSA) -- Pregnancy is an exciting time in a woman's life. It's a whirlwind of things to do and appointments to keep. Quite often, though, expectant mothers neglect to take care of themselves because they are so worried about taking care of their unborn baby.
That's why many experts agree taking prenatal vitamins is of utmost importance for both mom and baby. "During pregnancy, a woman's body undergoes many physical and hormonal changes. She can experience things like fatigue, loss of appetite and an upset stomach, which can make it difficult to maintain the proper levels of essential nutrients needed for a healthy pregnancy," says Jay M. Goldberg, MD FACOG, a Los Angeles-based obstetrician. Prenatal vitamins, which contain important ingredients such as DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, and folic acid, not only help soon-to-be-moms keep up with nutrients that can be lacking in a diet, but also can help a baby develop his or her brain, eyes and central nervous system. It's important to know that not all vitamins are the same, and now there is another choice. Vertical Pharmaceuticals LLC has created the first and only prenatal vitamin containing egg-based DHA -- OB Complete Gold. OB Complete Gold contains OmEGGa DHA, a bio-efficient form of DHA found naturally in the brain, eyes and breast milk that comes from cage-free hens. OmEGGa DHA is easily absorbed and digested into the body and is distributed in fewer, simpler steps. OB Complete Gold comes in a small softgel taken once daily and is a comprehensive formula with highly soluble forms of vitamins and minerals. It is sugar-free, lactose-free and gluten-free. To aid busy moms, this dietary supplement comes in an on-the-go package that helps them keep track of their daily dosage, offers helpful information on baby's development during each trimester and provides offers for savings on refills. OB Complete Gold is a prescription prenatal vitamin, so talk to your health care provider and try it for free. For more product and safety information, please visit www.obcompletegold.com. Ask The Doc........ Technology can be wonderful!
![]() by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
garywilliamsdmd.com I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing. Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making. I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile. It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry. Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com. Slate Belt Senior Center
