Local Author Publishes New Book Local author Anna Maria Caldara announces the publication of her 10th. book, Sherwood Anderson on Life and Writing. This forthright guide for writers at any stage of experience is also a treasury of Anderson’s acute observations. An unconventional and largely unschooled writer, his contemporaries, including Hemingway, Dreiser, Fitzgerald, and Faulkner, acknowledged his influence in their work.
“Sherwood Anderson {1876-1941} was determined to write about life just as it unfolded for the average person,” said Ms. Caldara. For his painstaking efforts, many of his books were banned or publicly burned. Despite these setbacks, he came to be regarded as one of America’s literary greats. Winesburg, Ohio, vilified in 1919, has long been considered a classic depiction of small town life. But in his correspondence, he lamented not having written a book for writers. “I was very familiar with his Notebook and Memoirs, and his posthumous Letters,” stated Ms. Caldara. “I realized that they contained comments on every aspect of the craft, from the initial urge to put words on paper to struggles with conscience and the importance of imagination.” Caldara extracted these references from the three volumes, and organized them. The result is a handbook that speaks to the art of writing, from why and how the process occurs to the obligation the writer has to convey life truthfully. Anderson wrote of the dehumanizing effect of Industrialization upon workers and families, and the spiritual vacancy left by the loss of farms. He sought to give a voice to the poor and rejected. Despite his personal financial trials, he encouraged writers not to sacrifice their principles for commercial gain. Anna Maria Caldara is the author of Endangered Environments {Bantam Doubleday Dell}, How Birds Fly and Other Marvels of the Animal World {Bantam Doubleday Dell}, The Piggyback Monkey {Small Farmers Journal}, Gossamer Threads {Amazon}, and Lenape Culture in Stone and Wood {Amazon.} She co-authored Waging Peace: A Handbook for Action {Coyote Nation Press}, and A Great Miracle Happened Here: The Jews of Pennsylvania’s Slate Belt {Morris Publishing.} She was a contributor to One Earth {Collins} and The Flexible Writer {Longman Publishers.} Ms. Caldara, a resident of Bangor, Pennsylvania, has been the chair and editor-in-chief of the Slate Belt Heritage Center’s Ethnic Heritage Book Committee since its inception nine years ago. She is currently writing a book about the region’s Lenape tree and rock sculptures. Sherwood Anderson on Life and Writing is available through Amazon in print and Kindle editions, and at local book signings. The non-alcoholic, beet-based cat wine was developed specifically for cats byDenver-based Apollo Peak. Cats can enjoy the company's products in two varieties, including the red "Pinot Meow" and white "Moscato." "All of our cat wine products have a proprietary blend that includes all-natural organically grown catnip, fresh beets and natural preservatives to help hold the taste and color," the company says on its website. "We believe in natural ingredients for our particularly classy feline friends." While the lack of alcohol ensures that cats won't get "drunk" from drinking Apollo Peak's wine, the products do contain organic catnip, which can produce a kind of drunken reaction. "Well, depending on how much they drink - the effects will vary," the company says. "When cats smell catnip they tend to get funny, move around and play a lot. The exact opposite occurs when they ingest catnip. They normally will become more "mellowed" out when they drink the wine so it might actually help for those restless nights." Because it is made from natural ingredients, the wine is also safe for dogs, and humans, to drink. The company teased an upcoming product for canines.
Food...Rhum Finally Arrives at Cocktail Party (NewsUSA) - Just as Miami has mojitos and Mexico has margaritas, so too is a French Caribbean Island. Martinique, also known as the "island of flowers," is not only home to warm, tropical breezes and blue waters, but also to Ti' Punch -- the cocktail that is the heart of this island's culture.
With a selection of just three simple ingredients: Rhum Agricole, sugarcane syrup or natural raw sugar, and a piece of lime, one can experience the spirit of Martinique and enjoy the island's culture in a glass. Islanders already know Ti' Punch (short for 'petit ponch,' or 'small punch') is to be savored throughout the day in the French West Indies, much like espresso is woven into daily lives in Italy. The cocktail's foundation is Rhum Agricole, a French-style rum made from freshly squeezed sugarcane juice rather than molasses. The spelling of rum with an "H" distinguishes it from its counterparts and signifying that it is Rhum Agricole. In the spirit of promoting this classic cocktail, Rhum Clement, a world-class producer of Rhum Agricole, hosted the first Clement Ti' Punch Cup beginning with several regional contests in 2015, and finally concluding early last month at Habitation Clement. The Ti' Punch Cup world final brought together 17 finalists from 10 countries, whittled down from more than 400 accomplished bartenders who hailed from Hong Kong to the United States, as well as other local and European countries. All entrants submitted recipes that stuck to the skeleton of the cocktail recipe, with an added twist. More than 1,400 people attended the event held at Habitation Clement, a historical landmark in Martinique, and watched as the finalists first presented their winning cocktail recipe qualifying them to travel to Martinique. From there, 10 contestants competed in the semifinal "marketplace" round, challenged by creating a Ti' Punch using a secret ingredient sourced from a banquet table of more than 60 local fruits, herbs, spices and local elixirs. The final round, the Ti' Punch Speed Challenge, ultimately awarded Dirk Hany, the head barman of The Widder Bar in Zurich, Switzerland, the coveted first Clement Ti' Punch Cup trophy. "Rhum Clement has demonstrated that Rhum Agricole has an equal footing in the world of cocktails? and that Ti' Punch is in the spotlight as one of the world's great classic cocktails," says Gregoire Gueden, CEO of Rhum Clement. Due to the success of the first Ti' Punch Cup, Rhum Clement has set the dates for its second contest. Registration will begin in the spring of 2017 and the next world final in Martinique will be held in March of 2018. Follow Rhum Clement at facebook.com/rhumclement, on Twitter at @rhumclement and on Instagram at @rhumclementofficial for more information on this popular event.
Parenting...Preventing Youth Sports Injuries(NewsUSA) - Want to really do something to keep kids from being hurt playing sports?
Athletic TIPS (Towards Injury Prevention in Sports) has teamed up with GlobalGiving -- the largest global crowdfunding site for nonprofits -- to help advance one of its key goals: hosting community workshops across the country to better educate young athletes, their parents and advisors on ways to foster "a safer experience" for everyone playing sports at the kindergarten through college levels. The workshops focus on: * Concussions * Nutrition * Dehydration and heat-related conditions * Musculosketal injuries Sports-related injuries have been recognized as "a silent epidemic" among the nation's youth -- accounting for nearly 8,000 emergency room visits daily. The recent launch of the not-for-profit Athletic TIPS program -- supported by everyone from health care professionals to athletic directors to retired New York Giants legend Michael Strahan -- was a direct response to those dire numbers. "GlobalGiving allows us to raise awareness regarding the urgency for appropriate sports-related education," said Sherry McAllister, DC, executive vice president of the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress, a program sponsor. The first workshop will take place this spring in San Jose, California, in partnership with Palmer College of Chiropractic. Others are being planned for Dallas, Boston, Atlanta and New Jersey. Anyone can donate through GlobalGiving.org, though McAllister particularly encouraged doctors of chiropractic to step up since their extensive expertise makes them part of the solution. As for the workshops, health care professionals, athletes, parents and coaches can request one in their area by visiting TIPS4Sports.org. Athletic TIPS will then work with them on the planning and fundraising, as well as potentially putting them in touch with pro athletes to heighten interest.
