Washington Students Dance for A Record Last week the students at Washington Elementary School in the Bangor Area School District made an unofficial attempt at breaking a world record. That record would be for the most students in grades K-4 doing the Cotton Eye Joe line dance all at the same time. After practicing with special area teachers, Lynn Beck, Lisa Sommer, Jolene Connelly, and Jacob Heck, for two (2) days in conjunction with their “one book, one school” reading of Charlotte’s Web, over 550 students gathered in the gym to perform the dance. Everything went very well and all students completed the dance as one group! Maybe next time we will try to break an official record! Chloe Rainey shared video of the attempted theft to Facebook. The seagull can be seen approaching the phone before snatching it with its beak and attempting to run away. "Well at least my phone didn't get stolen by a seagull today..." Rainey wrote. Rainey can be heard saying that the seagull is coming to steal her phone just before the bird takes several pecks at it and attempts to make a getaway. The footage then shows the seagull's feet as it attempts to flee before dropping the phone when Rainey said she hit the bird with her jumper and recovered the phone.
Sport...Bass Fishing - and Your Basic Gear(NewsUSA) -- The days of using a stick, some string and a worm are as much a part of American culture as apple pie and baseball. Unlike that time, there are now many choices for anglers this spring, depending on where you'll be fishing. In fact, selecting your gear is half the fun. But for starters, set aside the rods, reels, rigs, jigs and tackle, it's also just as important to remember these items that are often overlooked:
* Use sunscreen. You only have to suffer from sun poisoning one time to understand the relationship between sun and water. While the water may be cold and temperatures out-side chilly, sun reflecting off the water will still give you a burn. A sweat proof sunscreen that won't run and sting the eyes is ideal, as is one that won't leave a greasy residue that could adversely affect your grip. * Wear a base layer. A thin T-shirt is a must as a base layer, better if it is made of fabric that wicks away moisture. There are even some that are made to be water repellent and stain resistant with anti-odor properties for those in warmer climes. Since this is the layer that is in direct contact with your skin, you want something that will allow moisture to escape as you sweat. * Find the right pants. Spring days on the water are usually an all-day event, and call for versatility in your clothing. To that point, pants that convert to shorts are ideal. Like shirts, pants should be stain-resistant. Additionally, the pants should have plenty of pockets (with zippers) to carry anything extra. If you don't have access to a boat or dock, extend your fishing range with a good pair of fishing waders. * Cover your head. Hats with a hard-hat liner will keep your neck, ears and head warm in cold weather. For warmer climates, a wide-brimmed hat will guard against sunburn, overheating and overexposure. * Bring the extras. This could include a life vest, cooler or, if you happen to be a smokeless tobacco user, a portable spittoon like those offered by Flasr. The Atlanta-based company prides itself on creating the first-of-its-kind portable spittoon that is small enough to fit in your pocket and carry along wherever you go -- whether it's fishing on a lake or hunting in a blind. Its advanced closing mechanism ensures that it stays securely closed, eliminating the risk of spills and leaks. For more information, visit www.flasr.com; Market listing: FLASR (OTCQB: FLSR
Health.....New First Step to Helping Solve Infertility(NewsUSA) - Overall, close to 20 million women are affected by infertility. With a 58 percent reduction in sperm counts since 1938 due to estrogen-mimickers in many over-the-counter medications and in the water supply, men are equally affected. But 35 years after the first "test tube baby" was born, many couples struggling to conceive naturally are unaware of infertility treatment options that are available before they undergo the costly, invasive and, for many, humbling commitment to in vitro fertilization (IVF). Between the expense -- a single IVF cycle costs $12,500 on average, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine -- and the lack of medically approved alternatives, millions of would-be mothers and fathers feel stuck without an intermediate solution.
Coincident with April's National Infertility Awareness Week is the national availability of an FDA-cleared, drug- and hormone-free infertility treatment that provides just that missing first step that couples can afford and use in the privacy of their own home. The Conception Kit (http://www.conceptionkit.com) at-home system, which is covered by many insurance plans, is available for a $30 to $75 co-pay with a prescription and is now available nationally at retailers including Wal-Mart, Rite Aid and Walgreens. In fact, 60 percent of insured individuals in the U.S. already have reimbursable access to it through their pharma benefits like Express Scripts and Caremark. Additionally, religious leaders -- including the National Catholic Bioethics Center; Focus on the Family; and A TIME, the international Jewish organization -- have determined that this approach fits within their teachings as a first step to conception. The use of a uniquely designed Conception Cap, which is manufactured with medical-grade silicone, concentrates the sperm at the cervix's opening for 4 to 6 hours to enable greater fertilization opportunity, and it allows the user to go about her regular activities. The FDA required clinical trials on cap placement and instructions by patients. During the trials, 24 percent of the patients got pregnant during the first 30 days. This group has failed other methods used for conception, such as IVF and IUI. As more single women and non-traditional couples look to have children, along with still-staggering infertility rates and payers (insurance companies and benefit managers) keeping a close eye on the bottom line, the range of choices continues to grow for those who want to start a family. June 16Heritage Center 2016 Preservation AwardsThe Slate Belt Heritage Center is proud to announce the recipients of its' 2016 Preservation Award. Through this presentation the Heritage Center acknowledges those individuals who have performed exemplary acts toward promoting and preserving the culture and heritage of the Slate Belt. Candidates may be an individual or a group and can be self nominated or by another party. The three winners and their respective categories are as follows:
Anna Caldera The Initiative Award is presented to an individual who has shown exemplary actions in promoting and preserving the Slate Belt Heritage through In-Kind actions. This years recipient is Ms. Anna Caldera. Ms. Caldera played an integral part in editing all seven (7) books in the Heritage Center's "Ethnic Heritage Series". She volunteered, working countless hours advising and making adaptations along with the authors to produce prominent literary publications without thought of compensation. She has shown patience and guidance every stop of the way, making the ethnic project a huge success. Additionally she has co-authored "A Great Miracle Happened Here": The Jews of the Slate Belt and has also authored a book on the "Trail Trees of the Native Americans". Gage Parachos The Architectural Award is presented to an individual who has performed an exemplary act in saving or conserving a historic building, place or artifact where restoration is authentic to preservation. This years recipient is Mr. Gage Parachos. Mr. Parachos completed, as an Eagle Scout project, the restoration of the historic Portland Jail. Mr. Parachos repaired, plastered and sealed the stone walls, rebuilt the wood flooring, restored the jail windows and original door (found buried in the dirt) and placed artifacts to enhance the replication. He documented his work from beginning to end with a scrapbook of pictures. He followed up the project with clearing the grounds, making the walkway accessible and did exterior painting which enhanced his work. Joe DeFranco The Special Focus Award is presented to an individual who has shown exemplary actions in saving or conserving tradition or a body of knowledge: that individual who contributes to educational information via documentation. This years recipient is Mr. Joseph DeFranco. Mr. DeFranco has always enjoyed telling stories to friends, reading articles about Italy, food magazines and cookbooks, along with being surrounded by his grandparents who had the greatest influence on him. All of this has inspired him to write vignettes for the Blue Valley times, Slate Belt Magazine: The Belt and Beyond and subsequently publishing his own book "Growing Up in the Butcher Shop". Mr. DeFranco strived to keep the old customs alive so that the younger generation will have an idea as to his way of life growing up in the sixties, in a butcher shop and also for the older generations to reminisce days gone by. His efforts to conserve the Italian traditions via of educational information and documentation of his families heritage has earned him this reward. A ceremony to honor all three achievements will be held on Thursday, June 16th at 7:00 PM at the Heritage Center located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA The event is free and open to the public. Ask The Doc........ Technology can be wonderful!
by Dr. Gary Williams, DMD
garywilliamsdmd.com I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing. Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making. I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile. It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry. Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com. Slate Belt Senior Center
