Prevent and Treat Cold Sores This Winter
(StatePoint) Did you know that the cold sore virus is very common? In fact, eight out of 10 people have it. And, if you’ve ever had one, you already know that an outbreak can be painful and unpleasant. Itching, burning, tingling, and blisters are some of the symptoms associated with cold sores, and many people are especially susceptible to them during cold and flu season.
Blisters or sores usually appear when your body’s defenses are down -- when you are stressed, or your immune system is weak, making you especially vulnerable this time of year. There is no cure for cold sores, but you can take steps to prevent an outbreak and manage the symptoms. Here is what to know:
Prevention
Among other harmful effects to skin, excess sun exposure can trigger cold sores, no matter what the temperature is outdoors. In the cooler months, take steps to limit sun exposure as you would during summer. This includes wearing a lip balm with SPF protection.
Work to keep your immune system strong all season. Eat a well-balanced diet, exercise and get sufficient rest every night.
A lot of stress can also be a trigger for a cold sore. Whether it’s a bubble bath, yoga session, or an evening on the couch watching TV, make sure your schedule includes some quality down time.
Treatment
Most symptoms go away in seven to 12 days. Before a blister appears, you may feel tingling or burning on your upper or lower lip. This is called a “prodrome,” a signal that a cold sore is imminent. This is the best time to make sure you have a trusted cold sore treatment on hand.
You can help to ease symptoms at the site of the sore with a fast-acting formula such as Carmex Cold Sore Treatment. Ten percent benzocaine relieves pain and itch, while its patented Triplex formula works to smooth and fill in the sores to make it less noticeable. Keep dry, cracked lips moisturized with amedicated lip balm, such as those available from Carmex.
Remember, the cold sore virus is contagious, particularly during the open sore stage, so wash your hands regularly in order to prevent spreading the infection to others. Also avoid sharing glasses or utensils that may spread the virus. Sadly, kissing is also on the list of things to avoid.

MANCHESTER, England, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- A picture purporting to show a magpie smoking a cigarette on the streets of Manchester, England, is going viral after being posted to Twitter.
The picture, tweeted by user @WillMcHoebag, shows a magpie with an apparently dropped cigarette in its mouth in an imitation of a smoking human.
The user captioned the photo: "Meanwhile in Manchester."
Twitter users debated the authenticity of the picture and offered their own comments, with user @richarrowsmith suggesting: "That magpie looks like it's about to drop the hottest indie album of 2016."
The uploader appeared to be surprised at how quickly the picture went viral.
"1000 retweets for a smoking magpie. Fantastic," he tweeted.

County Dog Licenses The Northampton County Treasurer’s Office is informing all dog owners that 2016 annual dog licenses are now available online, by mail or in-person to county residents. NCC Professor to Show and Discuss His Photos of Coretta Scott King Thomas J. Shillea, director of art programs at NCC, will tell the story of his photographic portraits of Coretta Scott King in “Preserving the Dream: Photographs of the King Family” on Thursday, January 21, 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. at Northampton Community College’s College (NCC) Center, room 220, Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
In addition to taking ten official portraits of Coretta Scott King, Shillea also took a series of candid photographs of her with the Kings’ son Dexter. Both series will be shown at the presentation. Three portraits of Coretta Scott King are included in the permanent collection of the Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., and one of these three images is included in the Smithsonian Institution’s book African American Women. January 25NCC to Offer RN and LPN Review Course Northampton Community College (NCC) will offer review classes for registered nurses (RNs) and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) starting in January. Walter Cole and Marc Blau will present an" Old Fashion Valentine's Day: A Look at Love through the Oral History Interviews". Mr. Cole and Mr. Blau are retired history teachers from Pen Argyl and Bangor High Schools, respectively and are the chairs for the oral history committee at the Heritage Center. They have collected numerous interviews over the years and will use select passages form the collections to create an afternoon filled with love comparing courtship then and now.
