What You Need to Know
(BPT) - While the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is no longer new, each year brings changes to the health care law. As you undoubtedly know, the ACA is inextricably linked to taxes so keeping up with annual changes is important. Given tax season is now well underway, here's what you need to know when preparing your income tax return this season.
ACA paperwork: things to know before you file
Beginning each January, a variety of tax documents are sent your way. Some arrive via snail mail and others appear in your email inbox. And while you've probably come to know the most common, like 1040, W-2 and maybe even Form 1099, this tax season you may receive forms you haven't seen before: 1095-B and 1095-C (Not to be confused with Form 1095-A, which was required last year).
"These new forms are creating a bit of confusion for taxpayers this year. Folks simply aren't clear about what they're supposed to do with Forms 1095 when they receive them," says Andrew Townsend, tax analyst for TaxAct, a leading provider of affordable digital and download tax preparation solutions. "The important thing to know is that, in most cases, you do not need to wait until you receive these forms to file your tax return. Simply check a box on your return to indicate you had minimum essential coverage throughout the year.
"You don't even have to worry about attaching 1095 forms to your return - the IRS receives a separate copy. Just put your form(s) in a safe place in case you need to verify any information later."
A little background
In 2014, the IRS released Forms 1095-B and 1095-C as optional paperwork for employers and insurance providers. For tax year 2015, it became a requirement for every business and insurance provider to administer the forms to the IRS and the corresponding individual or employee as proof of provided coverage.
Here's what you need to know about the three versions of Form 1095:
* Form 1095-A - if you purchased health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace in 2015, you can expect to receive Form 1095-A. When preparing your 2015 federal return, you will need to use this information to complete your income tax filing, claim premium tax credits and adjust any tax credit payments.
* Form 1095-B - your insurance company will send you this form if you received minimum essential health coverage through an employer, the government or a government-run plan such as Medicaid, Medicare, CHIP, TRICARE, VA benefits, etc.
* Form 1095-C - this form will come directly from your employer if it offered coverage to you through a company-sponsored health care plan.
No matter which 1095 form you get, the purpose is the same: to provide an accurate picture of the health insurance coverage you had access to throughout the past year. However, the information provided on Form 1095-B and 1095-C varies slightly.
Form 1095-B includes details specific to your selected health insurance plan, such as the name of your health insurance provider, who the plan covered and the period during which your family had health insurance.
Form 1095-C lists the coverage options you were offered through a company-sponsored health care plan. Even if you chose not to participate in your company-sponsored plan, you will still receive Form 1095-C as proof of the options made available to you.
Keep an eye out for these forms, which should be sent to you on or before March 31, 2016.
Steeper penalties for the uninsured
The ACA says that most Americans living in the United States are required to have qualified health insurance coverage.
"The good news is many people already meet minimum essential coverage requirements," Townsend says. "However, those who didn't have health insurance for more than two months in 2015 and did not qualify for an exemption may face a tax penalty for each month they went without coverage."
This penalty, known as an individual shared responsibility payment, is not new this year, but the amount a taxpayer without qualifying insurance may be subject to pay with their 2015 tax return has changed.
The penalty, payable with 2015 returns (due April 18, 2016), is the greater of:
* 2 percent of your yearly household income above the tax-filing threshold (generally about $10,300) up to a maximum cost of the national average premium to purchase a Bronze Plan from the federal healthcare exchange (also called a Marketplace)
* $325 per adult ($162.50 per child under 18), but not more than $975
These costs have more than tripled since 2014 when the penalty was $95 per person or 1 percent of household income.
In 2016 they spike even higher. If you do not meet the minimum essential coverage requirements throughout 2016, you may pay the greater of 2.5 percent of your household income or $695 per adult and $347.50 per child under 18 (up to $2,085 for a family).

Rare Albino Turtle Hatchling

YAROOMBA, Australia, (UPI) -- Animal care volunteers in Australia discovered a rare albino turtle hatchling making its way out of a nest. The baby turtle, who staff at Coolum District Coast Care Group named Alby, is a green turtle only in name as its skin is actually white with pink accents, as seen in photos shared to Facebook.
"Alby was the straggler in the nest, with his siblings having hatched on Friday evening when no-one was watching," Coolum District Coast Care Group wrote on Facebook. "Our volunteers found him just under the sand when collecting the data from the hatched nest."
The rare turtle was one of 122 hatchlings to make its way from the nest on Friday and was the first ever albino discovered by the group in nine years.
Unfortunately, Coolum District Coast Care Group President Linda Warneminde said that Alby's rare coloring may hurt its already low survival rate.
"In normal hatchlings there's one in 1,000 that reaches maturity," she told ABC Sunshine Coast.

Alby due to its light coloring according to Threatened Species Unit chief scientist, Dr. Col Limpus.
"They're not particularly suited with color patterns that would blend and camouflage within the environment and they're more likely to be taken by predators," he said.

Project Child Hosting Dance Event
Project Child is hosting its tenth annual Have a Heart for Children dinner dance on Saturday, March 5th at the Hotel Bethlehem. Proceeds will benefit initiatives designed to reduce child abuse in the Lehigh Valley. The event begins at 5:30 P.M and is a lovely evening of mixing, mingling and dancing to the music of the Philadelphia Funk Authority. Project Child is a program of Valley Youth House. It has been operating since 1991 with the mission of preventing child abuse and neglect in the Lehigh Valley and the surrounding region. This mission is accomplished through the provision of educational resources for parents and professionals; the dissemination of information about the seriousness of child abuse and strategies for its prevention. Alternatives to physical violence are promoted along with parenting skills.
As a community coalition, Project Child is comprised of individuals and agencies engaged in striving to protect the rights of children to live free of abuse and neglect in an environment which fosters positive self-development.

What is amateur radio, and what do you do with it?
Amateur radio is a fun hobby where you can talk with people across town or all over the world, even with astronauts in space, without telephone wires, cell phones or the Internet. It provides helpful communication service in emergencies, public service and community events.
Amateur radio operators come from all walks of life, from all ages, men and women, students and retirees, factory workers and doctors, and all in between. We all have one thing in common: ham radio.
We can tinker and experiment and build things. We can help with communications at parades and other community events. We send health and welfare messages in times of disaster; sometimes we are the only communications available. We can compete in radio contests, and we can have casual conversations with other hams worldwide. To do all this you need a license and a radio.
Delaware-Lehigh Amateur Radio Club will offer a series of 9 Tuesday evening free classes, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., beginning March 8 at the Northampton County Gracedale Complex, Nazareth, We will help anyone interested in earning their entry-level FCC amateur radio license. We also will offer a separate series of classes to upgrade to the General License on the same dates.

A Family Fun Event! Please join the Slate Belt YMCA Staff and Volunteers for an "Egg-citing" Easter Event. We are mixing up the traditional Egg Hunt by hosting a community event similar to the popular and successful Trunk or Treat event that we held in the fall. Hunt in the Trunk will be held in the back lot of the Slate Belt Y on March 12 from 4:00-5:30pm or when we run out of candy and eggs. Silent Auction to Benefit Slater Family Network
Saturday, March 12th at Five Points Elementary School, Slater Family Network will be hosting a Silent Auction. All proceeds aid local families in need through Slater Family Network. Young at Art - Expo of Art Camps On Saturday, March 12, 2016, the Lehigh Valley Arts Council will present Young at Art, an expo of arts camps and schools, to assist parents with selecting the appropriate summer class for their child. This inaugural event will be held at Penn State Lehigh Valley, from 9:00am to 2:30pm, and feature thirty exhibitors who offer lessons in the performing, literary, media and visual arts. Free admission to the expo is provided to the public.
Families with children (ages four to eighteen years old) will enjoy meeting the various exhibitors and learning about the artistic opportunities for their aspiring creatives. The day’s festivities will showcase an arts demonstration, performance or activity every 25-minutes so children will have a chance “to try on what kind of artist” they want to be this summer. NCC to Host Lecture by Author Colum McCann
Reservations are being taken for Northampton Community College’s (NCC) talk by Colum McCann, National Book Award winner, on Thursday, April 14, 7:30 p.m., at the Arthur L. Spartan Center, Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township. The talk will be live streamed to the Monroe Campus’s Keystone Hall, room 202.
McCann is the author of Let the Great World Spin, Thirteen Ways of Looking and TransAtlantic. He is the co-founder of Narrative 4, which fosters empathy by breaking down barriers and shattering stereotypes through the exchange of stories across the world. It is led by globally influential artists, educators, students and community advocates.
McCann’s lecture is the keynote address in NCC’s 2015-2016 National Endowment for the Humanities series The Good Life, which asks engaging questions about life, the world and our place in it.

Quiet Valley’s 19th Century Days
Quiet Valley’s 19th Century Days - A Day in the Life is a new hands-on educational program designed to provide students ages 6-18 with the opportunity to explore the lifestyle of a 19th century homestead. Save the date for this two-day event: Thursday, April 21th & Friday, April 22st 2016. Each day features two workshop slots; one from 12:30-2:00 and one from 2:15-3:45. You may sign up for up to four different sessions. There are over 25 different workshop offerings from small and large animal husbandry to simple machine to carding, spinning and weaving which are all designed to meet the new Pennsylvania STEAM-based educational curriculum guidelines.
Registration will begin at 9 a.m. on February 1, 2016. Registrations will be taken by phone, in person or on-line until sessions are full. UMBT Recreation Field Hockey Program
UMBT Recreation Field Hockey Program will resume in May. UMBT Sports Recreation is proud to team with Adidas for the upcoming 2016 UMBT Recreation Field Hockey Program. The program is open to girls in grades 1 through 6. Each session focuses on fundamental skills, introduction and development as well as game play. The program is held at the Upper Mt. Bethel Community Park. Fee is $45 for first child and $35 for each additional child in the family. More information will be released at a later date.
