Rehab of International Boiler Works in East Stroudsburg
Governor Tom Wolf announced today a $1.8 million Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant for the continued redevelopment of the former International Boiler Works (IBW) Building in East Stroudsburg. “It's been a great honor to work together with Senator Mario Scavello and Governor Tom Wolf to secure redevelopment funds for the long-dormant International Boiler Works property in my hometown of East Stroudsburg,” State Rep. David Parker said. “For decades the workers on this property manufactured products sold around the world. These funds will help bring back globally-competitive jobs and a stronger tax-base into the borough and school district of East Stroudsburg Borough, and Monroe County. It's a big win." State Senator Mario Scavello commented, “This grant is a step in the right direction and will allow PMEDC to continue their efforts in cooperation with the Borough of East Stroudsburg to make it a productive industrial site once again.” The Borough of East Stroudsburg acquired the site to assure it would be redeveloped for a job generating enterprise. The Monroe County Commissioners also approved a loan from the Revolving Loan Fund (funded by CDBG) and PMEDC secured a grant to assist in the environmental cleanup of the site. The process represents a very productive collaborative effort with the Borough of East Stroudsburg. Chuck Leonard, PMEDC Executive Director, added, “This building has been vacant for a long time and now that the environmental remediation is completed, we can move on to the necessary demolition and site work to make it shovel ready. “ “We have had numerous inquiries about the site over the years and there is interest from a company who is considering an expansion,” said Leonard. “There are some steps we need to take to make that happen but this grant will assist in making it more feasible.“ It is expected that the project would create 100 to 150 new full time jobs and 25 new construction jobs. State Senator Mario Scavello represents the 40th Senatorial District, which includes portions of Monroe and Northampton Counties. Celebrate “Dining In Day”
A great deal of research supports that eating together as a family has a host of benefits beyond better nutrition. Families who eat together report better parent-child relationships and fewer behavior management problems. Teenagers who eat with their families are less likely to engage in risky behavior such as drugs and alcohol, teen sex or other dangerous activities. They also get better grades, have better mental health and are overall healthier than peers who do not spend mealtime with their families. To encourage more family meals, the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (NEAFCS) is teaming up with The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) in promoting “Dining In for Healthy Families” Day on December 3. Get ideas and sign a pledge to eat together at www.aafcs.org/fcsday While sitting down as a family together to eat dinner on this one day celebrates this often passé ritual, there is a lot of value in making time for family dinner all year long. Here are some tips for building family meals into your family’s busy schedule: 1. Make family meals a priority and agree upon a schedule. 2. Try to have regular family meals two to three times per week. 3. If dinnertime doesn't work, have family breakfasts or snacks. 4. Keep meals simple. Slow cookers save time for busy and working families! 5. Double recipes and freeze food for a second meal. 6. Set aside 30 minutes on the weekend for meal planning and cooking ahead. 7. Make family meals fun and include children in menu planning, shopping and food preparation. 8. Discuss neutral or positive topics at the table. Use conversation starters such as “What was the best vacation you were ever on?” or “What was the best thing that happened to you today?” 9. Eliminate distractions like TV and cell phones. 10. Eat slowly, and enjoy your time as a family! Blue Valley Rescue Blood Drive A Blood Drive hosted by Blue Valley Rescue Squad will be held December 3 from 9am - 1pm at 65 N. Eighth Street, Bangor.

Tips to Help Keep Your Home Warm, Comfortable and Energy Efficient
(BPT) - With winter comes the holiday season, a time that's supposed to be associated with "comfort and joy." But how joyful will it be if pests invade your house, or if your home is cold and drafty? Help stay warm all winter long by addressing factors like air leaks from gaps and cracks that can make your home feel uncomfortable.
"Drafts and heat loss are common problems in the winter, and they affect homes of every age, size and construction," says Gary Parsons, fellow at The Dow Chemical Company. "Those factors can seriously affect your home's energy efficiency and how comfortable it feels. Fortunately, it's not difficult to deal with issues like air leaks and insulation, and doing so can significantly improve your home's function and livability."
Parsons suggests these steps to help ensure a draft-free, pest-free and comfy home this winter season:
Seal cracks and gaps
Gaps and cracks throughout the home allow hot air to escape and cold air and pests to enter. Energy Star estimates that homes can have a half mile or more of cracks around doors, windows and sill plates alone, and those aren't the only places in a home where gaps can exist. Air duct joints, points where piping enters a home, and anywhere wood meets concrete (such as around the foundation) are locations where cracks and gaps can occur.
Sealing cracks can help prevent air leakage, improve a home's overall energy efficiency and block out pests and insects. In fact, homeowners can save an average of 15 percent on heating and cooling by air sealing their homes and adding insulation, according to Energy Star.
Even do-it-yourself novices can easily and quickly seal cracks and gaps in their homes. Products like GREAT STUFF(R) Gaps & Cracks and GREAT STUFF(R) PestblockInsulating Foam Sealants are specially formulated to seal gaps and cracks, blocking out air, moisture and even pests. The ready-to-use insulating foam sealants can fill gaps up to 1 inch. When using the product, be sure to follow safety guidelines, including covering all skin, using gloves and safety goggles, and keeping the work area well ventilated.
Check insulation
Insulation is like a blanket that your home wears to help keep everyone inside warm and cozy. If your home doesn't have the right amount or type of insulation for your climate, it can lose heat, energy efficiency and comfort. About 90 percent of existing homes don't have enough insulation, according to the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association.
Follow Energy Star's guidelines for more information on how to check your insulation to see if your home could benefit from adding more.
Take care of the HVAC system
If your heating, ventilation and air conditioning system isn't working as well as it could, you're sacrificing comfort and increasing your energy bills. Make sure to check the cooling system in the spring and the heating system in the fall to ensure they are operating efficiently.
Have the ducts inspected and seal any leaks. Be sure to change air filters regularly, per the system manufacturer's recommendation for filter type and frequency. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, dirty air filters restrict airflow, making HVAC systems work harder and consume more energy to heat your home.
Don't overlook little things
Things as simple as a forgotten window left cracked in summer months or neglecting to close the flue in your wood-burning fireplace can all affect the amount of heat and comfort that escape your home in the winter.
Before the weather turns very cold, make a sweep through your home and check for these minor but important points:
* Windows - Are all your windows closed? If you've recently sealed around windows, you probably opened them for ventilation. Double check to be sure you remembered to close them.
* Thermostat - Is yours properly programmed to optimize energy use by adjusting the temperature when you're out of the house? Proper use of a programmable thermostat can cut energy bills by nearly $200 per year, according to Energy Star.
* Ceiling fans - you can use ceiling fans to supplement your furnace during the winter, but you have to remember to reverse the air flow. Most ceiling fans have a switch that allows you to reverse the direction of the fan blades to spin clockwise, which pushes warm air down from the ceiling during winter.

Sick of Being Sick? Tips to Getting Better and Kicking that Cold to the Curb
(BPT) - From obligations at work to errands and chores and making time for family and friends - your plate is fuller than ever and, unfortunately, getting sick can throw a major wrench into your marathon of activities and greatly hamper your productivity. Despite how frustrating it can be, your busy life doesn't come to a halt when you're sick. That's why you need to do everything you can to start feeling better faster so you don't fall too far behind. Take these five steps to help you get back to conquering your full to-do list in no time.
* Get plenty of sleep. With all of the hustle and bustle of your day, taking the time for sleep may seem impossible, but an established sleep schedule is one of the most important things you can do to support your health. Getting eight hours of sleep is always optimal especially when sick; however sickness can often disrupt our sleep. To help combat symptoms like sinus pressure or a stuffed nose from keeping you up, you can make easy changes like propping yourself up in bed and moisturizing the air with a humidifier or vaporizer. You may find you breathe - and sleep - easier.
* Combat your worst symptoms. When your cold and flu symptoms become too much, get some real relief. The best plan of action? Turn to your pharmacist for expert advice and medicine recommendations. Advil Cold & Sinus is the number one pharmacist recommended brand to treat your worst cold and flu symptoms. Ask for it at the pharmacy counter.
* Don't be afraid to exercise. If your symptoms are primarily in your head and neck, you're generally still healthy enough to exercise. Nevertheless, consider a lighter workout to get the benefits of exercise without putting too much stress on your already-suffering body. A brisk walk for 30 to 45 minutes each day while sick is recommended to help you recover. However, be sure to dress appropriately for the climate.
* Binge on super foods. We all know about the benefits of getting plenty of Vitamin C when sick, but you can also complement its effects by increasing your intake of Vitamins A, E and B6, as well as iron and zinc to help you recover faster. These helpful nutrients can be found in fruits and veggies, like sweet potatoes and carrots, whole grains and lean meats or fish, so don't be afraid to add more of these foods to your diet when you don't feel well.
* Drink up. Water, broth or herbal tea - the more hydrated you stay, the better. Fluids not only soothe your throat, but they also ward off dehydration, thin your mucus and help your body systems function adequately - which, in turn, helps your immune system function at its best. With that said, not all drinks are created equal; stay away from caffeinated or alcoholic drinks. These beverages will actually increase dehydration, not relieve it.
Being sick can be painful enough without the fear of missing out on important activities, so follow these tips to get back on your feet as fast as possible. To learn more about Advil Cold and Sinus, visit www.respiratory.advil.com/advil-cold-and-sinus.
