Back-to-School Reading and Beyond(StatePoint) As summer comes to a close, it can be hard for both kids and adults to get back into an academic mindset. Whether you’re a parent that’s dreading the start of the school rush or struggling to help your children rediscover reading success, the trick is to plan ahead.
“Identify strategies and approaches to stay organized to help ease your child seamlessly back into a reading and learning mindset,” says Christine Willig, President of McGraw-Hill Education’s School Group. “Savvy parents use the week or two before school begins to give kids a jumpstart on refreshing their reading skills, and help prepare them for the school year ahead.” Willig offers parents the following tips to ease kids back into a reading and learning mindset: • Make it entertaining: Reading should be fun. Let kids pick their own material to ensure the subjects engage them and help them develop a love of reading. • Play games: Reading board games can be very useful in helping kids build their spelling, vocabulary and comprehension skills. Games can reinforce skills in ways that are fun and memorable, so concepts truly stick. • Take advantage of free library programs: Many community libraries offer special programs for kids, particularly in the summer or weeks leading up to school. Beat the heat and take advantage of these opportunities whenever possible. • Incorporate technology: There’s no denying it, children today are comfortable using all forms of technology, whether computers, tablets or smartphones. Getting kids to enjoy reading and to do it more often could be as simple as presenting it in a preferred medium. Many great books for kids of all ages are available digitally and provide interactive experiences that bring reading to life. For example, Fusion Reading, a mobile learning app from McGraw-Hill Education, is a comprehensive, research-based reading intervention program for students in grades 6-12. It features interactive lessons and games to make reading fun, so struggling students can quickly become fluent, competent, and confident readers. To learn more about how educational games like Fusion Reading are helping kids get a jumpstart on literacy, or to buy the $0.99 mobile app visit bit.ly/FusionReading. • Build on schoolwork: These tips can also be used when your child is back in school. For example, parents should stay involved with their children’s schoolwork to help them build on progress made throughout the school year. Many classrooms are improving the way reading is taught in order to make it fun, modern and interactive, while ensuring students meet state and national standards. To help improve grades across the board, make reading a priority in your home. For greater success this school year and beyond, find opportunities to read that are fun, stress-free and engaging Music in the Grove The band Wayward with Bangor drummer Tom Marino will provide a night of music in the grove at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bangor from 5-8pm, Saturday, August 6. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation said an officer responded to the town of Throop on July 5 to investigate complaints about a foul odor and smell coming from a large pile of burning horse manure. The officer discovered the owners of a stable had been storing the horse feces in large piles. The owners said the piles had spontaneously combusted before, but previously the smells and smoke had been carried away from nearby residences by the wind. "The flames spread dangerously close to a valley full of dry vegetation and dead trees," the department said. "It took three local fire departments more than two hours to extinguish the burning manure. The stable owners were advised to take measures to mitigate the combustion problem immediately." .
Parenting...Family photos you want to keep forever![]() (BPT) - If you're like most people, images of your family are probably languishing on your smartphone or tucked away in the closet on an old computer. If you take a break from the selfies and invest in the time to hire a professional photographer, you'll end up with beautiful family portraits that capture and preserve the love, affection and expressions that are unique to your family. These photographs are your gift to yourself, your children and generations to come.
Here are some tips from Professional Photographers of America (PPA) on how to get memorable family photos that stand the test of time. Choose a style that reflects your family Sounds obvious? Not that simple. Think about your family's unique personality, then find a photographer who has experience taking pictures similar to what you would like to display in your home. What environment brings out your family's unique personality? Is it a park, a beach, an urban setting? Maybe it's as simple as your own living room or backyard. Find your family's photo style by taking the quiz at PPA.com/Quiz. Begin with the end in mind Before your photo session, think about and discuss where and how your photos will be displayed in your home, and think about the story you want to tell. Do you have a tall, skinny spot above your fireplace for a single, iconic image of your family? Or do you have a large wall where you want to start a family gallery? Perhaps you'd like a coffee table album? Whether you want to dress up a large wall or you want a collection of images, your photographer will know which type of session will give you the images you'll be proud to display in your home. Dress for success These printed photos will be around for a long time. In 20 years, you'll want your photos to create warm feelings and happy memories of your loved ones - without the cringing and giggling over dated styles. The goal of any fine portrait is to direct the viewer's eye to the face in the portrait. So when choosing outfits, pick simple, solid colors and classic, timeless styles rather than hot trends and busy patterns. Use props and pets If you have an accessory that helps express your family's unique personality, add it. If your preschooler won't go anywhere without his superhero cape, let him wear it. Shared hobbies and interests can go in here too. If you're a family of readers, having everyone pose with their favorite book can add a personal touch. And, of course, including your family pet is a great way to show the special bond you have with your dog or cat and capture the spirit and beauty of your furry pal forever. Relax and go with the flow Part of having your portraits created is the "experience" of the session. Yet, all too often, parents get worked up when their child isn't looking at the photographer or smiling "right." This causes anxiety in the child and robs the photographer of good opportunities for candid portraits. So before the shoot, rest well and come well fed. You'll want to be in the best possible mood as it helps set the tone for your family. Once on set, relax, smile, and have fun. Seasoned family portrait photographers know how to make you and your children feel comfortable so they can capture the love, affection and expressions that are unique to your family. Hire a pro Everyone is taking pictures these days, and just about anyone clicking a shutter may be lucky enough to land a good shot once in a while. You will be much happier with your photos, though, if you choose a photographer who can consistently produce great images. A professional photographer will have the artistic skills, technical training and experience taking the kind of photos you want. Plus, they will be able to provide you with printing options that will withstand the hardship of time and won't fade like most home-printed photos. To find a family portrait photographer in your area, visit PPA.com/FamilyPhotographers.
College....A+ college moving tips![]() (BPT) - Across the country thousands of students are packing up their childhood rooms and heading off to a new adventure at college. The transition is equal parts exciting and nerve-wracking. The move itself, however, shouldn't cause unneeded stress.
While college students usually don't have a lot of belongings that need to be moved, the process can be exhausting and overwhelming, especially if they're moving across the country. Rather than relying on guesswork, take some tips from the moving experts at Penske Truck Rental: 1. Condense and store. College apartments are small and dorm rooms are even smaller. Leave nonessentials at home and pack only what you'll use on a regular basis. Photo albums, fine jewelry and fragile knickknacks will be safer there anyway. As for what you'll need, colleges typically provide a checklist of essential items that can be used as a guide. 2. Be prepared. Start packing early and create a running list of items you need to bring but are unable to pack until it's time to leave. Get sturdy boxes in a variety of sizes plus bubble wrap to protect your fragile items. You'll also need packing tape and bold markers for labeling and securing boxes. Moving blankets and hand trucks will make the process easier. 3. Mark and group. Label the outside of boxes as you pack and add a generalized list of what's inside for easy reference upon arrival. Remember to label the box with both your name and a symbol that will help you recognize what's yours. When thousands of students are moving at once, this simple trick can cut confusion quickly. 4. Plan ahead. When renting a moving truck, reserve it at least two weeks in advance. Because summer and fall are popular times for moves, delaying could leave you without available transportation. Most college students find the 12- or 16-foot truck perfect for moving a few large items or the contents of a small apartment. For guidance with truck selection, visit www.PenskeTruckRental.com. 5. Drive safe. When driving, remember that trucks are taller, wider and require more stopping distance than a standard vehicle. Use caution particularly when the truck is packed full. Watch out for low-hanging tree branches and building overhangs, and use extra caution when turning. 6. Stay secure. To protect your belongings, park in well-lit areas and padlock the rear door, especially if stopping for the night. If possible, back the truck up tight against a building wall to prevent access to the storage area. Unfortunately, thieves take advantage of students on the hectic moving days leading up to the start of the academic year. 7. Keep a document bag. Keep important documents like registration information and dorm confirmations in a bag in the car with you for easy access. This should also include credit cards, your driver's license and any other essentials. For more college moving tips, visit www.PenskeTruckRental.com.
