Today at 1048am, Slate Belt Regional police were dispatched to a report of an armed robbery at the Verizon Wireless Store in Wind Gap. Police responded and learned that just after 10:00am, two masked males entered the Verizon Store. One suspect displayed a handgun and tied the employees hands behind his back. The suspects ordered the employee to give them the combination to the safe where phones are kept. They then ordered the employee into the bathroom at the rear of the store.
The suspects then stole possibly 40-45 phones from the store along with the night deposit from the night prior. The two suspects then fled out of the rear door in an unknown direction. No vehicles were noted in the lot by the employee. The employee then fled the building to a gas station on S. Broadway. The employee was not injured. The suspects were described as being 5’8 – 6’2 wearing ski masks covering their faces. Photographs of the suspects will be made available. There were over 6,000 new flu cases reported in Pennsylvania the season's total to 26,675. Northampton County is fourth in the state jumping from 969 cases last week to 1307. Allegheny is still first with 2582 but the number of new cases slowed to a little more than 200. Lehigh county increased from 931 to 1317. while Monroe increased 25% to 419. Flu statistics are released every Tuesday. |
Slaters End Season at 21-1.....

Season three began December 28 at the Hanover nest. The cameras and audio equipment installed for the 2016 season continue to provide excellent views and audio of this eagle family.
The live stream began December 17, 2016 shortly after the installation of two new cameras and audio equipment. Eggs were laid on February 18 and 21. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest.
Hanover is located in south-central PA about five miles from the Mason-Dixon line.

NCC to Stage Play Buzzer
Buzzer, a play by Tracey Scott Wilson, will be staged in early March at the Norman R. Roberts Lab Theatre, Kopecek Hall, Northampton Community College (NCC), 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township. Performances will take place Thursday, March 2; Friday, March 3; Friday, March 4; and Monday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, March 5 at 3:00 p.m.

Satchel Paige nominated for Baseball HOF - 1971
On this day in 1971, pitcher Leroy “Satchel” Paige becomes the first Negro League veteran to be nominated for the Baseball Hall of Fame. In August of that year, Paige, a pitching legend known for his fastball, showmanship and the longevity of his playing career, which spanned five decades, was inducted. Joe DiMaggio once called Paige “the best and fastest pitcher I’ve ever faced.” Paige was born in Mobile, Alabama, most likely on July 7, 1906, although the exact date remains a mystery. He earned his nickname, Satchel, as a boy when he earned money carrying passengers’ bags at train stations. Baseball was segregated when Paige started playing baseball professionally in the 1920s, so he spent most of his career pitching for Negro League teams around the United States. During the winter season, he pitched for teams in the Caribbean and Central and South America. As a barnstorming player who traveled thousands of miles each season and played for whichever team met his asking price, he pitched an estimated 2,500 games, had 300 shut-outs and 55 no-hitters. In one month in 1935, he reportedly pitched 29 consecutive games.

Harambe Shaped Cheeto Sells for $99,900
(UPI) -- An eBay auction for a Cheeto "that looks like Harambe the gorilla" ended with a winning bid of nearly $100,000. The posting, by Burbank, Calif., based user valuestampsinc, said the "one of a kind" item was found inside a bag of Flamin' Hot Cheetos.
The listing reads:
"I opened up a bag of Flamin Hot Cheetos and as soon as I looked inside I came across this unique Cheetos that looks like Harambe the gorilla.
This item is one of a kind!
It measures up to about 1 1/2 inches in length.
This item up for bid is only for this unique Cheetos, bag not included. This makes a great collectible for anyone who appreciates rare items!"
Bidding on the item ended Tuesday morning with a high bid of $99,900, but it was unclear whether the buyer -- who has 88 percent positive feedback -- will actually shell out the sum for the gorilla-shaped snack food.

A senior-friendly workout to improve movement and prevent injury
(BPT) - Exercise is good for everyone, but seniors with mobility or balance issues may wonder what kind of exercise they can do that will be safe, easy and effective. Jogging outdoors, running on a treadmill or lifting weights at the gym aren't always practical - or enjoyable - activities for everyone. However, one type of exercise works for everyone, no matter your age or ability, because it relies on improving practical movements often involved in everyday activities. "Natural movement is universal, and it's about bringing movement back to the basics," says Bradly Prigge, wellness exercise specialist with the Mayo Clinic's Healthy Living Program. "It's not about following the latest fitness craze or learning the newest secret to weight loss. Natural movement is about connecting with your body and cultivating an awareness of your full abilities."
Rather than engaging in strenuous activity for its own sake alone, natural movement training emphasizes improving the efficiency of practical movements which can include rising from a seated to a standing position, getting up off the floor, crawling, stepping under or over objects, and more. The objective, Prigge explains, is not just to improve health but also enhance how well you can perform each movement.
Efficient movement can help with balance, inspire more healthful activity, and provide practical benefits in everyday life - all of which are especially valuable to seniors facing mobility or health challenges.
"The practice and training of movement shouldn't feel like a chore or something you have to do," Prigge says. "Rather, it should empower and liberate you, and, as a result, enhance your life. Natural movement training can help improve your strength, mobility and conditioning, but they're not the direct goal. Those improvements are the result of practicing and developing movement skills that are directly transferable to real world situations, like rising from a seated to a standing position, walking with balance and confidence, and lifting a bag of groceries without injury."
Natural movement is for everyone because at its most basic level it incorporates movements that are instinctual to all humans. For example, a natural movement workout might include crawling on your hands and knees for 30 seconds to a few minutes, sitting on the floor and swiveling hips and knees to facilitate standing up, or balancing while walking across a beam.
"I realized just how organic this type of exercise is after attending a natural movement training class," Prigge says. "I came home and saw my 2-year-old daughter doing the same kind of moves I'd just learned in training, without anyone teaching her to do them."
Prigge offers some advice for making the most of your natural movement workout:
* Pay attention to your movement and strive to develop awareness of your body's sensations, and how different movements feel. For example, where do you feel pressure and/or tension in your body when making a particular move? How does shifting your body weight or changing position alter those sensations?
* Only perform movements and positions that your body allows without producing pain. Just as walking, sitting, standing and other everyday movements shouldn't cause pain, your natural movement workout should also be pain-free.
* It's alright - and even advisable - to use your hands for support or raise your hips with bolsters or pillows until you develop greater mobility and strength.
* Be kind to yourself and realize it is important to meet yourself where you currently are, rather than where you used to be or feel you should be.

3 easy home improvement projects
you can tackle right now
((BPT) - During the milder months — like summer and fall — homeowners naturally tend to prioritize working on the exterior of their houses, because the weather is nice. But in the winter, we’re more apt to tackle smaller home improvement projects inside. This seems like a no brainer, right? After all, no one wants to redo landscaping when it’s 35 degrees outside.
With that in mind, Chip Gaines, host of HGTV’s Fixer Upper and lead contractor/owner of Magnolia Homes, offers these three easy home improvement projects to help you make the most of your winter indoors.
Repaint your walls
While you’re holed up inside the house decorating for the holidays or just escaping the cold, you may start noticing places on your walls in high-traffic areas with one too many scuff marks or kids’ grimy handprints. Whether they come from the kids, the pets or even yourself, erasing them is quick and easy.
KILZ Hide-All primer and sealer can take care of these marks and more. This high-hiding product only needs one hour of dry time before you apply your topcoat, so there’s no need to set aside a whole weekend to cross this project off your list.
Clear grout of gunk
No matter how much cleaning Gaines does at his house, he says there’s one thing that’s hard to keep looking clean: grout. The dirt and grime that turns your grout nasty colors can be scrubbed out, but it takes a little extra TLC. Gaines says he actually enjoys this project and finds it kind of fun because his boys like to join in and help, making it a family affair.
To clean grout at your home, he recommends wiping the surface with a wet cloth and mixing up a paste of two-parts baking soda and one-part water. Scrub it onto the grout surface using an old toothbrush or stiff-bristled brush, then rinse the area with water. If your grout lines are stained from mildew or kitchen spills, try spraying a mixture of equal parts vinegar and warm water onto the tile. It’ll foam for a bit, but once it’s done, scrub it well. After a final rinse, the stains should be gone.
Seal out the elements
If you live in a place where heavy rain or snow are always trying to find a way into your house, know that weather can lead to serious issues in your basement or foundation. To prevent water damage and leakage stains, inspect masonry on the interior and exterior of your home. Fill any defects you find with fast-setting hydraulic cement and clean up the surface.
Once the surface is clean and dry, apply two coats of KILZ Basement & Masonry Waterproofer. This interior and exterior product is formulated for waterproofing basement walls, masonry walls, retaining walls, and cinder and concrete blocks. Once the second coat is dry, you’re all set for the winter.

1885 Club Accepting Nominations
The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.

The project to publish a book about the Homefront Magazine began in October 2015. The co-authors; Marc Blau, Chip Turtzo, Karen Brewer and Deanna Ruzanski assembled volunteers to read and summarize the 4000 + letters that WW II soldiers sent home to their beloved Homefront Magazine.
The letters were then categorized by topic, and placed into appropriate chapters. Some of the chapters are: The Fairest of the Month, Battlefield Stories, Soldier’s Artwork, Poems and Prayers, Heroes and more.
The book highlights the letters and used the hand-written words of our Slate Belt fighting men and women to tell the story. Many of your fathers and grandfathers are mentioned in the book and while it was unfeasible to use all of the letters, those that were chosen was based on content. Books can be picked up on Sunday April 23, 2017 from 9 -Noon., however to unsure that copies are available for all who would like a copy, pre-orders are now being taken.

BAHS Marching Band Uniform Fund Drive The Bangor Area High School Marching Band uniforms, which are modeled after Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. History of the Viaduct
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Sunday, February 12th @ 2:00 PM. Speaker for the afternoon will be local photographer Ernie Dietz. Mr. Dietz will be showing pictures of the Bangor “Viaduct” pre 1939 construction, during its use as a conduit span over the railroad tracks, its recent demolition and current reconstruction. He will also speak about the materials that were and are now being used to erect the historic landmark and will reveal the little known fact about “names” that were inscribed on the top of the old side posts. These sessions are mandatory for anyone who would like to enroll in the program.
The session will provide students with the opportunity to meet the instructors, hear about the program and its requirements, and gain information about potential resources for financial assistance for qualified candidates.
This hands-on non-credit course is taught by instructors with lineworker experience and has been popular since its inception since 2013. It prepares students for entry-level linework in the electrical and telecommunications industries.
The session will provide students with the opportunity to meet the instructors, hear about the program and its requirements, and gain information about potential resources for financial assistance for qualified candidates.
This hands-on non-credit course is taught by instructors with lineworker experience and has been popular since its inception since 2013. It prepares students for entry-level linework in the electrical and telecommunications industries.

Lemieux to Speaking at NCC
Jamilah Lemieux, a former senior editor at Ebony magazine and current vice president of news and men’s programming at Interactive One, an online news platform, will speak at Northampton Community College (NCC) on Thursday, February 16, at 11:00 a.m., as part of the College’s observation of Black History Month. The talk is titled The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, but It Might Be Live-Streamed.

The hike will be about half a mile. Wear waterproof boots and dress for the weather. Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Registration is required. You will be asked to specify your age and weight range when registering to determine what size snowshoe you will need. If you plan to bring your own snowshoes note that on your registration so we can offer the equipment to additional families.

BAHS Drama Department Pancake Breakfast
On Saturday, February 18, from 8am to noon, at Bangor Area Middle School, the Bangor High School Drama Department will host the fourth annual pancake breakfast with the cast of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.” Classic characters, such as Belle, the Beast, and Mrs. Potts, will transport visitors to the French countryside as they welcome guests of all ages with music, food, and activities.
In addition to restaurant-quality food and top-notch service, patrons can take advantage of a special opportunity to have their photo taken with the princess, the beast, and the enchanted characters. After snapping a photo and filling their bellies, guests can play games and participate in other activities, all while enjoying musical performances from the cast of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”.

Join us for this walk as we look for and identify plants in their winter garb. Learn what plants are important food for birds and other animals during the cold winter months. Also learn about edible plants that can help save you in an emergency situation! Participants should wear waterproof boots, dress for the weather, bring snacks and bottled water. Registration is required.

NCC to Stage Play Buzzer
Buzzer, a play by Tracey Scott Wilson, will be staged in early March at the Norman R. Roberts Lab Theatre, Kopecek Hall, Northampton Community College (NCC), 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township. Performances will take place Thursday, March 2; Friday, March 3; Friday, March 4; and Monday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. and on Saturday, March 5 at 3:00 p.m.
The play examines urban gentrification through an interracial couple’s relationship as they move to the inner city.

American Cancer Society Egg Hunt
The American Cancer Society's second annual community egg hunt will be held Saturday, April 1, 2:00 pm at East Bangor Park, The egg hunt will be for ages 0 to 10. An adult egg hunt will follow. They are looking for vendors, have limited space with first come, first serve for $10. Adult Pair Egg Hunt for a five-dollar donation. Several prizes will be given out. Allentown, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks are happy to announce their 2017 National Arena League (NAL) schedule. Featuring six home and six away games, the Steelhawks season opens at home on Sunday, March 19 th at 4pm against the expansion Dayton Wolfpack.
“After much anticipation are thrilled to be able to release our 2017 league schedule today,” stated Steelhawks General Manager Mike Clark. “The National Arena League is ready to kickoff its inaugural season, and we can’t wait to start our seventh year of play. Week one can’t come soon enough, and we look forward to seeing the Steelhawks faithful out in full force this season inside the PPL Center.” Additional schedule highlights include a Week Three matchup where the team will be making the long trip to Florida to take on the Jacksonville Sharks, former members of the AFL. Week Four brings a familiar opponent to the Valley; the Columbus Lions will be in the Hawks Nest for the Steelhawks second home game on April 9th. The Steelhawks closest rivals this year will be the Dayton (Ohio) Wolfpack and the High Country (North Carolina) Grizzlies, each of whom appear on Lehigh Valley’s schedule multiple times; LV faces Dayton four times – two home, two away, and High Country three times – one home, two away.
