Weird Wacky Weather![]() Daffodils arrive
by Larry Cory
Winter weather sometimes can be boring with the same cold weather day after day, after day. But as expected, weather sometimes brings the unexpected. Last Sunday, we awakened to find 7 inches of snow on the ground and only 48 hours later the temperature rose to 75 degrees, giving us our largest snowfall and warmest temperature of the year in a span of just two days. Since then on-again, off-again rain has dropped about an inch of rain, and the temperature dropped 47 degrees to a low of 33 on Friday. Another inch or more of rain is forecasted for today and tomorrow, which will add to our already above normal total. Currently, the Slate Belt Town Topics weather station has registered 4.80 inches of rain this month. Another round of rain could boost the monthly total to 6 inches which will be double the average of 2.77 inches. Looking ahead to next week, we can expect partly cloudy weather with temperatures in the mid 50s. Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures will remain mild Wednesday and Thursday with showers. The showers will continue Friday and Saturday with temperatures near 40. The long range forecast for next Sunday and Monday is partly cloudy with temperatures in the mid 40s. Winter, however, is most likely not done. Last year we had 16 inches of snow on March 14. During March of 2015 we had six measurable snowfalls and four in March, 2013. Pot for your pets?![]() People have used medicinal marijuana to ease everything from glaucoma to the side effects of chemotherapy. So why shouldn't man's best friend give medicinal pot a shot?
Pet owners are already using marijuana medicinally to help their suffering cats and dogs, according to a 2013 article in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Most of the time, animals that ingest pot get over the effects within a few hours, veterinarians say. But in large quantities, pot can be deadly to animals. Bizarre Home Remedies That Work![]() There are many home remedies for all types of ailments that have been passed down over the years. While some are bunk, many actually work and are often better than their traditional medical counterparts (without the unpleasant side effects). Check out this list of simple, sometimes wacky, home remedies that use products found right in your pantry:
Strawberries for Whiter Teeth: Strawberries contain malic acid, a tooth-whitening agent. Crush a fresh strawberry to a pulp, then mix with 1 teaspoon baking soda until blended. Spread the mixture onto your teeth, leave on for 5 minutes, then rinse. Strawberries also contain natural sugar, so be sure to brush afterward. Cuticle infections with vinegar: Whether you have had a recent visit to an overzealous manicurist or have a bad habit of chewing your fingers, you can treat your torn up and infected cuticles naturally. Simply submerge your fingers in a glass of equal parts white vinegar and warm water for 15 minutes. Repeat once a day until the infection heals. White vinegar has anti-bacterial properties and will help to reduce the infection in the nails. Remove warts with duct tape: Instead of getting your undesirable warts frozen off, simply apply a strip of duct tape to the affected area. Keep the tape on for three days, remove, rub the wart area with a pumice stone, and then reapply with new tape. Repeat until they are completely gone. Duct tape is an inexpensive way to suffocate the skin virus and remove those unsightly warts. It’s been a Farmers’ Almanac tip for years! Potatoes for bug bites: Raw potatoes are claimed to have anti-itch and anti-inflammatory properties, perfect for relief from a bug bite. Create a potato poultice by grating a peeled potato and putting the shreds into a thin piece of cloth. Secure the contents with a rubber band and apply the poultice to your cleaned bite until the potato is dry. Clean the area with warm water and reapply with fresh poultice until the symptoms have subsided. Banana peels for poison ivy relief: Rubbing the inside of a banana peel against the poison ivy rash may provide some itch relief. They can also shine your shoes! Celery for bad breath: Chewing on a celery stick or apple can help to dissipate bad breath. The rich fiber content helps to increase saliva production which helps to wash away bacteria-causing food particles and plaque that cause bad breath. Yams for hot flashes: Yams are not only yummy, but they are a great source of antioxidants and nutrients that can decrease hot flashes. Yams are thought to be a source of natural progesterone, relieving some menopausal symptoms. Note: yams and sweet potatoes are often confused, so be sure you’re eating true yams. Remove splinters with baking soda: Rather than digging around with tweezers to remove pesky splinters, apply a baking soda paste to help swell the skin and draw the splinter to the surface. Mix a small amount of baking soda and water to form a paste, apply to the area, and cover with a bandage. After about 24 hours, the splinter should protrude enough to be able to pull it out easily with tweezers. If no luck, repeat. Aspirin for dandruff relief: Skip the dandruff shampoo and keep your flaking in check with aspirin. Aspirin contains the same active ingredients (salicylic acid) as many medicated dandruff shampoos. To make your own dandruff shampoo: Add 1 tablespoon of crushed aspirin to your regular shampoo, suds up, and leave in for up to 5-10 minutes before rinsing. Ease tinnitus with nature sounds: Digitally produced sounds mimicking nature and water have been shown to provide some relief from tinnitus. Numerous white-noise machines offer nature sound settings or nature sounds apps can be downloaded on your phone that will do the trick. Garlic for athlete’s foot fungus: The health benefits of garlic are nothing new, but did you know it can even be used to treat the fungus of athlete’s foot? Mince some garlic cloves, mix with some olive oil, and dab the mixture onto the affected areas, being sure to get in between your toes. Rinse. Treat acne with coconut oil: Coconut oil’s versatile health benefits are certainly nothing new, being around since the 1800s, but it might also be helpful for those with acne. Coconut oil contains lauric acid which has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. Apply it to your skin, rub it in with your fingertips, rinse with warm water, and wipe your face with a hot steamy cloth.

Veterans Care Financial Protection Act
Washington, DC - Last week, the U.S. Senate passed by unanimous consent the Veterans Care Financial Protection Act, a bipartisan bill introduced by Representatives Matt Cartwright (D-Pa.), Seth Moulton (D-Mass.), Jim Renacci (R-Ohio), Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), and Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) and Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Marco Rubio (D-Fla.). A modified version of the bill previously passed the House of Representatives unanimously and now heads to the President for his signature. The Veterans Care Financial Protection Act seeks to crack down on scam artists who are diverting federal funds from the Veterans Affairs (VA) Aid and Attendance program intended to support low-income and older veterans who require assisted care. The Aid and Attendance (A&A) benefit helps pay for assisted living or in-home personal care for veterans who qualify for a VA pension, and are housebound or require the aid and attendance of another person. Scam artists have targeted veterans, charging them fees for obtaining the benefit even though the application process is free. Some scammers even take control of the veteran’s assets and move them into an irrevocable trust or an annuity, which the elderly veteran often cannot access again for many years, and may disqualify the veteran from other assistance, like Medicaid. “It’s our responsibility to protect our nation’s heroes and ensure they receive their earned benefits. The A&A benefit is crucial for veterans who need help with in-home care or assisted living. Unfortunately, predatory scam artists exploit veterans by turning the well-deserved A&A benefit into a financial nightmare,” said Rep. Matt Cartwright. “I’m thrilled the Senate passed our bipartisan, commonsense proposal to safeguard veterans from these scams. I thank my colleagues in the Senate for their hard work on this bill.” “All three of my brothers served in the military, and they taught me about the sacrifices our veterans have made to keep us safe. We need to make sure when our servicemembers return home, they get the care they need and deserve,”said Sen. Warren. “But the Aid and Attendance program has been targeted by scams, putting our veterans at even greater financial risk and wasting taxpayer dollars. Our legislation can help put a stop to this financial fraud and honor the promises we made to our veterans.” The Veterans Care Financial Protection Act would:
THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 24Alamo defenders call for help 1836 On this day in 1836, in San Antonio, Texas, Colonel William Travis issues a call for help on behalf of the Texan troops defending the Alamo, an old Spanish mission and fortress under attack by the Mexican army. A native of Alabama, Travis moved to the Mexican state of Texas in 1831. He soon became a leader of the growing movement to overthrow the Mexican government and establish an independent Texan republic. When the Texas revolution began in 1835, Travis became a lieutenant-colonel in the revolutionary army and was given command of troops in the recently captured city of San Antonio de Bexar (now San Antonio). On February 23, 1836, a large Mexican force commanded by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana arrived suddenly in San Antonio. Travis and his troops took shelter in the Alamo, where they were soon joined by a volunteer force led by Colonel James Bowie. Though Santa Ana’s 5,000 troops heavily outnumbered the several hundred Texans, Travis and his men determined not to give up. On February 24, they answered Santa Ana’s call for surrender with a bold shot from the Alamo’s cannon. Furious, the Mexican general ordered his forces to launch a siege. Travis immediately recognized his disadvantage and sent out several messages via couriers asking for reinforcements. Addressing one of the pleas to “The People of Texas and All Americans in the World,” Travis signed off with the now-famous phrase “Victory or Death.” ![]()

Harlem Wizards Basketball Game
The Bangor Area Middle School PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student, Organization) is hosting its 1st Annual Harlem Wizards Basketball Game on April 7, 2018. While the PTSO is fairly new, we are running this fundraiser in hopes that we can raise enough money to assist the school with future purchases that are not in their budget such as: new library books, school supplies and equipment, funding field trips and assemblies, as well as assist with purchases for the school dances throughout the year. We wanted to take a new approach to fundraising and offer a family friendly event that would bring the community together for a great cause and promote wellness at the same time. We will have our own team consisting of teachers and staff from each school in the district as well as some High School players. Our team will be playing against the Harlem Wizards. To purchase tickets online you can go to: https://www.harlemwizards.com/schedule-tickets/ Find the April calendar and click on April 7th, Bangor, PA.
