What To Do About Cellulite?

Picture
The lumpy or dimpled appearance of cellulite happens as a result of pockets of fat bulging out from in between the fibrous bands that pull on the skin's connective tissue.
Cellulite is a very common problem that affects 85 to 90 percent of women, Ploch said. It may be caused by hormonal and genetic factors, she explained.
The dimpled appearance of skin on the upper thighs, backside and hips is more visible in people who have thinner skin (aging is also to blame for thinner skin). Women typically have thinner skin than men, making cellulite more noticeable.
"Cellulite is very difficult to treat, and it's an innate characteristic of being female," Ploch told Live Science. Although losing weight may make the bumpiness less visible, it probably won't remove all of the appearance, she said.
Ploch is not a fan of using topical creams that claim to treat cellulite, she said, because these creams may at best temporarily hydrate the skin. This may make the cellulite less visible, but only temporarily.
She said the most promising treatments for cellulite involve destroying or reorienting the fibrous bands, through the use of lasers, radio-frequency devices or a minimally invasive procedure, such as Cellfina. This treatment uses tiny needles to release the attachment points of the fibrous bands.
Although some of the newer treatments for cellulite appear to have good short-term results, it's still too early to tell their long-term effectiveness, Ploch said. To keep the skin looking smoother, the procedures may need to be repeated, and these treatments can be both painful and expensive.

 Sharing Faith Through Art

Picture
by Pat Shoup
“What can a church do to help their budget?” That question has been asked by members of many local churches including, Trinity Lutheran Church in Bangor.
Trinity has been able to cut expenses this past year by printing their bulletin covers instead of purchasing them. With a new color copier, the members of the Worship and Music Committee decided that printing the covers would be easy. Even if it saved them a couple hundred dollars a year, it was a start.
While the committee was trying to decide on a picture for the front cover, it was suggested that they could have the Sunday School Children draw them. That idea grew into: “Why not let anyone make one – not only Sunday School Children?”
Since Advent season was coming up – it was a good time to start because there would be many things to draw (i.e. Baby Jesus, Candles, Christmas wreaths, Christmas trees, manger scenes, angels, etc.) Trinity Pastor Larry Laine explained to the congregation what was going to happen and the process began.
Not only does Trinity save money, but also the people who come to worship look forward to seeing the artwork on the front of each bulletin. Some Sundays there are two or three different bulletin covers with the same theme. The back of every bulletin contains a story about the front-page drawing and lets everyone know who drew the picture.
There have been covers made by children and adults of all ages. One of the Christmas covers was drawn by two-year-old Cori Conrad. It was a brown stick with some green limbs and colored circles for decorations, a beautiful Christmas Tree shared with everyone from the hands of a toddler.  One Sunday,  Brenda Herring shared a collage of the bulletin covers she had collected since the process began. It was a great reminder of how people are sharing their faith in pictures.
Jean Tucker, a member of Trinity and who is a resident at Alexandria Manor,  keeps every cover in her room and shares each one with her friends at the Manor. And everyone who receives food from Trinity's pantry receives a bulletin with their order as a reminder of the many things that are happening in the church.
Not only has Trinity cut down on expenses by printing their own covers, the congregation continues to express their Christian faith by sharing their art.
Trinity Lutheran Church invites you to join them on any Sundays at 10:15. You'll not only get to see the bulletin yourself, but you'll also be able to spend an hour with a congregation which loves to share their faith with their guests. And after the service, you're invited to get to know the members better during the coffee hour downstairs in the Fellowship Hall.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 20

Ireland allows sale of contraceptives  1985

In a highly controversial vote on February 20, 1985, the Irish government defies the powerful Catholic Church and approves the sale of contraceptives.
Up until 1979, Irish law prohibited the importation and sale of contraceptives. In a 1973 case, McGee v. The Attorney General, the Irish Supreme Court found that a constitutional right to marital privacy covered the use of contraceptives. Pressured by strong conservative forces in Irish society, particularly the Roman Catholic Church, the government was slow to change the law to reflect the court’s decision, and a number of proposed bills failed before reaching the books.
In 1979, the Irish health minister, Charles Haughey, introduced a bill limiting the legal provision of contraceptives to “bona fide family planning purposes.” Signed into law in November 1980, the Health (Family Planning) Act ensured that contraceptives could be sold by a registered pharmacist to customers with a valid medical prescription. Still, many people saw the law as too strict. Over the next several years, a movement began to make contraceptives more easily available, causing bitter divisions inside and outside of the Dail, Ireland’s main house of Parliament.

The Bangor Area Middle School PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student, Organization) is hosting its 1st Annual Harlem Wizards Basketball Game on April 7, 2018.   While the PTSO is fairly new, we are running this fundraiser in hopes that we can raise enough money to assist the school with future purchases that are not in their budget such as: new library books, school supplies and equipment, funding field trips and assemblies,  as well as assist with purchases for the school dances throughout the year.  We wanted to take a new approach to fundraising and offer a family friendly event that would bring the community together for a great cause and promote wellness at the same time. We will have our own team consisting of teachers and staff from each school in the district as well as some High School players.  Our team will be playing against the Harlem Wizards.
