CLICK HERE TO READ THE MONROE DAILY NEWSATTENTION SLATE BELTDear Fellow Slate Belt Residents, Again, we ask our community to pull together. This time it's not to help build a YMCA but to stop the building of a Sludge Treatment Facility next to the Waste Management landfill in Plainfield Township. We urge as many citizens as possible to find all the information given to us through sludgefree.umbt on Facebook, John Reinhart’s January 17th letter in the Express Times, and the facebook Sludge Free Slate Belt flyers. This information will get you up to speed quickly. We urge you to contact the representatives of the Green Knight Economic Development group at tech@gkedc.com and the Plainfield Township Board of Supervisors and the Plainfield Township Zoning Board at twp.plainfield.pa .us. Contacting individual board members would be helpful. Anyone you know in these organizations should be contacted and your attendance at their meetings would be great. The future of our families and neighborhoods are at stake. We will be there in opposition with you. DCNR Announces Gypsy Moth Spraying![]() The State Bureau of Forestry again is preparing for an aerial spraying effort to combat gypsy moth populations poised for spring outbreaks in the eastern and central portions of Pennsylvania, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources officials say.
“Weather -- specifically a cold, wet spring in 2016 -- emerged as DCNR’s strongest ally in spraying efforts that go beyond trying to control an annoying and destructive insect,” said DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “Spraying is needed to ensure the health of our valuable hardwoods when threatened with heavy defoliation. Amid drought, fire or other stress factors, oaks often fall victim to the gypsy moth across the state.” The secretary noted weather conditions curtailed “heavy infestations” anticipated in northeastern and central counties in spring 2016, and reduced last year’s statewide defoliation to 104,018 acres. “Conversely, warm dry weather in April and May, 2015, helped delay emergence of a fungus -- a natural and most effective enemy of the gypsy moth -- until June and the result was nearly 700,000 acres of defoliation in 2015,” Dunn said. The gypsy moth suppression program is conducted by the Bureau of Forestry on a request basis, with the goal of preventing defoliation so that trees do not become stressed and succumb to disease and other pests. A 46,540-acre suppression program in 110 treatment blocks is proposed for 2017 in 12 counties. They are: Carbon, Columbia, Cumberland, Juniata, Lackawanna, Lehigh, Luzerne, Mifflin, Northampton, Perry, Snyder and Union. Weather dependent, spraying is expected to begin in late April or early May, and be completed by the end of May or early June. Maps of the treatment areas will be posted on the DCNR Bureau of Forestry website: http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/forestry/insectsdisease/gypsymoth/index.htm . Bureau of Forestry experts note the state’s oak stands are especially vulnerable to gypsy moth infestation, often resulting in tree mortality. The loss of habitat, timber and tree growth are considerable when gypsy moth populations go untreated. The gypsy moth will continue its cyclic population with ups and downs about every five to 10 years. A tree begins to significantly suffer when 30 percent or more of its leaf surface is lost. ![]() Bangor's Anthony Schiavone drives to the basket during the Slaters' 54-43 win over Southern Lehigh Friday night to win its third consecutive Colonial League championship and fourth in five years. Postal Service Act Regulates USPO 1792![]() On this day in 1792, President George Washington signs legislation renewing the United States Post Office as a cabinet department led by the postmaster general, guaranteeing inexpensive delivery of all newspapers, stipulating the right to privacy and granting Congress the ability to expand postal service to new areas of the nation. William Goddard, a Patriot printer frustrated that the royal postal service was unable to reliably deliver his Pennsylvania Chronicle to its readers or deliver critical news for the paper to Goddard, laid out a plan for the Constitutional Post before the Continental Congress on October 5, 1774. Congress waited to act on the plan until after the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. Benjamin Franklin promoted Goddard’s plan and served as the first postmaster general under the Continental Congress beginning on July 26, 1775, nearly one year before the Congress declared independence from the British Crown. Franklin’s son-in-law, Richard Bache, took over the position on November 7, 1776, when Franklin became an American emissary to France.

The bright yellow chicks were found huddling in large groups to stay warm, inspectors said. Some were dead or dying but most survived. Investigators said the birds may have come from a commercial poultry producer and abandoned by a third party in a field near Peterborough. "I have never seen anything like it, it was just a sea of yellow. And the noise was unbelievable," Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals inspector Justin Stubbs said. ""Thankfully, most of the chicks did not appear to be suffering." Finance...Fiscally Friendly Budgeting
