Jaguar at PA Zoo Surprises Zookeepers with Two Cubs
(UPI) -- A zoo in Pennsylvania received two unexpected bundles of joy when a female jaguar gave birth to a pair of cubs. Staff at Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown were surprised to find that resident female Inka had given birth to two cubs three months after being introduced to male Zean.
"Inka gave birth in the early morning hours of January 24," the zoo said. "The birth was unexpected, but our animal care team has done everything in their power to make sure mom and cubs are safe and comfortable."
Inka and Zean were first directly introduced in October 2016 after they had previously only been able to view each other between the fencing that separates their exhibit spaces.
"The first day of their introduction was October 12. The chances for a successful conception were slim for a couple of 'first-timers,' which is why the birth came as somewhat of a surprise," the zoo said.
The cubs were the first jaguars born n 2017 within an The Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited facility and they will be out of sight from the public for the next few months until they are transferred into the zoo's upcoming "Trail of the Jaguar" facility.
Zoo staff have been monitoring the cubs since their birth and had to wait before caring mother Inka would allow staff near her babies.

1. Include the five senses.
The secret to setting up the best spa experience, Mersberger says, is making positive connections to all the senses: touch, smell, taste, sight and sound.
“If one of these is missing, the experience isn’t the same,” he says.
Even the smallest changes can transform your space and elevate your mood. You can light a candle and plug in the indoor water fountain to create sound and lighting that soothes the mind. Snuggle into a plush robe and encase your feet in super soft socks or slippers after your shower or bath. Finally, don’t forget to set yourself up with a glass of wine and a cheese plate.
2. Prepare your body with hydrotherapy.
People have known this since ancient times: water has great powers of restoration, which is why hydrotherapy is central to any worthwhile spa experience. At home, it’s as simple as making small adjustments to your shower routine. Mersberger suggests changing the pulses in your shower head and experimenting with hot and cool blasts of water, which he says are good for the skin and blood flow.
But be careful, while a hot bath or shower before bed feels terrific, it’s not relaxing since warm temperatures will raise your blood flow, preparing the body for work or exercise, he says. To ready your body for sleep or relaxation, finish with a shower that’s a neutral temperature (about 92-97 degrees Fahrenheit), to return your body to normal.
3. Release blocked energy.
Start your quest for relaxation with a simple yoga move called the seated cat/cow position. "In addition to releasing blocked energy, it also opens the spine," says Ashley Kohler, Manager of Yoga on the Lake at Destination Kohler. To do this, sit cross-legged on the floor and place your hands on your knees. As you inhale, lean your chest forward and lift your gaze to the sky. As you exhale, round out your spine while drawing your shoulders forward, gazing down.
4. Hone your breathing technique.
Breathing is a vital component of managing stress levels, Kohler says. Yet most Americans only breathe with a third of their lung capacity, creating “flight energy” in the body and cultivating that feeling of stress.
“Conscious breathing will ease your nervous system and help control stress levels and help you unwind,” Kohler says.
Here’s an easy antidote: Sit quietly for a few moments, taking full-body, deep breaths through your nose.
“I like to visualize the ocean, and imagine the sound of the its big crashing waves with every breath I take,” she says.
5. Relieve stress by going outside.
The benefits of going outside in the winter is not only good for our bodies, being outside chases away the winter blahs, as research has told us. So go ahead and skip the treadmill and go jogging in the park. Or rent a pair of snowshoes take a tromp through the woods. Or take a walk. When you’re done, there’s no better feeling than coming in from the cool air, knowing you are truly in for the day

(BPT) - A few years ago, a Harris Interactive-sponsored poll* found that Americans consider 50 to be the “perfect age” to live forever in good health. For many, the half-century mark can be a time when experience and opportunity balance perfectly — as told by the saying “50 is the new 30.” At 50 there may be more time to spend on your hobbies or other activities that interest you.
At 50, the last thing anyone would want is to be blindsided by illness. Yet risks of certain medical conditions increase with age. For example, shingles is a condition caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox — a virus that 98 percent of adults have had according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Even after recovery from chickenpox, the virus never leaves the body. At some point later in life, it can unexpectedly reactivate and emerge as shingles — a painful blistering rash that can last for 30 days.
When Edwin DePeiza discovered he had shingles, he learned the meaning of the adage: “You don’t miss something until it’s gone.” DePeiza, who is in his 60s and resides in Massachusetts, first noticed a burning sensation on his torso. By the time he saw his doctor, a rash had developed. Upon seeing the rash, his doctor quickly diagnosed it as shingles.
DePeiza, a passionate guitar player, witnessed how shingles can interrupt the moments that matter in life. His guitar playing had taken him all over the world, but the intense pain of shingles forced him to put his passion on hold.
“The things I love to do most I couldn’t do, like playing in the band and spending time with [my wife] Marylou,” DePeiza recalls. “The sensation of having shingles for me was like being scalded by hot water, [or] having hot cereal spill on you. I have never experienced that kind of pain or burning sensation.”
According to the CDC, one in three people will get shingles in their lifetime, and every year, about 1 million cases are diagnosed in the United States. Adults aged 50 and older are especially at risk for shingles, as the risk increases with age due to naturally declining immune systems. There is no way to tell who will get shingles, nor how severe the case will be.
Shingles most commonly surfaces on a single side of the torso, but it can appear anywhere on the body — even the face. For most people, after the shingles rash and blisters heal, the pain and itch subside — though some people may experience permanent scarring even after the rash heals. In some cases, shingles can cause complications like postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a long-term nerve pain that can last for months or even years after the blisters heal and the rash disappears.

1885 Club Accepting Nominations
The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.

This workshop will focus on simple and basic techniques. Each student will experience the opportunity to develop their own style and technique with acrylic paint. Students will learn the importance of the use of drawing as guidance in artwork and also these of light and shadow with color. Each individual will work at their own pace and the instructor will guide them through the process and answer any questions they may have. Two themes will be presented to work from.

A Fundraiser for The Blue Mountain Community Library will be held on Wed., February 8, 2017, from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm at the Café on Broadway, 21 S. Broadway in Wind Gap, PA. The Café will generously donate a portion of all sales that day to the library. All food is fresh and made to order. You are encouraged to call ahead with your order. History of the Viaduct
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Sunday, February 12th @ 2:00 PM. Speaker for the afternoon will be local photographer Ernie Dietz. Mr. Dietz will be showing pictures of the Bangor “Viaduct” pre 1939 construction, during its use as a conduit span over the railroad tracks, its recent demolition and current reconstruction. He will also speak about the materials that were and are now being used to erect the historic landmark and will reveal the little known fact about “names” that were inscribed on the top of the old side posts. NCC to Stage Collision
Northampton Community College (NCC) will stage a production of Collision, a play by Lyle Kessler, in which the lives of three students, a professor and a stranger collide.
Performances will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16, 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall, Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.

Lemieux to Speaking at NCC
Jamilah Lemieux, a former senior editor at Ebony magazine and current vice president of news and men’s programming at Interactive One, an online news platform, will speak at Northampton Community College (NCC) on Thursday, February 16, at 11:00 a.m., as part of the College’s observation of Black History Month. The talk is titled The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, but It Might Be Live-Streamed.
Also included on February 16 will be social justice performances by NCC students, starting at 9:30 a.m. and a faculty panel discussion at 1:30 p.m.

Explore Jacobsburg at night! We will learn about what animals might be found in the evening and how they survive cold winter nights. Then we’ll put on warm layers and snowshoes to go outside and experience a snowy winter night. Snowshoes and trekking poles will be provided. If we don’t get any snow then we will hike in our boots. The hike will be about half a mile. Wear waterproof boots and dress for the weather. Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Registration is required. You will be asked to specify your age and weight range when registering to determine what size snowshoe you will need. If you plan to bring your own snowshoes note that on your registration so we can offer the equipment to additional families.

BAHS Drama Department Pancake Breakfast
On Saturday, February 18, from 8am to noon, at Bangor Area Middle School, the Bangor High School Drama Department will host the fourth annual pancake breakfast with the cast of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.” Classic characters, such as Belle, the Beast, and Mrs. Potts, will transport visitors to the French countryside as they welcome guests of all ages with music, food, and activities.
In addition to restaurant-quality food and top-notch service, patrons can take advantage of a special opportunity to have their photo taken with the princess, the beast, and the enchanted characters. After snapping a photo and filling their bellies, guests can play games and participate in other activities, all while enjoying musical performances from the cast of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”.
The breakfast will raise funds for the high school musical production of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”. Performance dates are: March 3, 4 & 5, 2017. The 7th Annual “912” Scholarship is for a graduating Bangor HS senior who plans on attending a technical school or college. The scholarship is awarded to a well rounded student with interests in academics, outdoor sporting activities such as hunting, fishing, hiking and an enthusiasm for the outdoors. The student must possess a giving spirit exemplified through community service and love for family and friends. The application process is being facilitated by Slater Family Network. Applications are in the HS Guidance office, Slater Family Network office or on the school district website front page under 2017 Scholarships or under Slater Family Network.

Allentown, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks are happy to announce their 2017 National Arena League (NAL) schedule. Featuring six home and six away games, the Steelhawks season opens at home on Sunday, March 19 th at 4pm against the expansion Dayton Wolfpack.
“After much anticipation are thrilled to be able to release our 2017 league schedule today,” stated Steelhawks General Manager Mike Clark. “The National Arena League is ready to kickoff its inaugural season, and we can’t wait to start our seventh year of play. Week one can’t come soon enough, and we look forward to seeing the Steelhawks faithful out in full force this season inside the PPL Center.” Additional schedule highlights include a Week Three matchup where the team will be making the long trip to Florida to take on the Jacksonville Sharks, former members of the AFL. Week Four brings a familiar opponent to the Valley; the Columbus Lions will be in the Hawks Nest for the Steelhawks second home game on April 9th. The Steelhawks closest rivals this year will be the Dayton (Ohio) Wolfpack and the High Country (North Carolina) Grizzlies, each of whom appear on Lehigh Valley’s schedule multiple times; LV faces Dayton four times – two home, two away, and High Country three times – one home, two away.
