NCC Students to Benefit from PPL STEM Scholarship Financial need shouldn’t stop promising students from pursuing science, math, engineering or technology careers. A new scholarship at Northampton Community College, funded by the PPL Foundation, will help break down that barrier.
The college recently received a $25,000 grant from the foundation to create the PPL STEM Scholarship, which will support young people interested in these critical areas of study. The scholarship will be given to an academically talented student with financial need from one of NCC’s eight sponsoring school districts – Bangor Area, Bethlehem Area, Easton Area, Nazareth Area, Northampton Area, Pen Argyl Area, Saucon Valley, and Wilson Area. “Northampton Community College is grateful to the PPL Foundation for its generous support in providing a scholarship opportunity to a deserving and talented NCC student. It is because of companies like PPL that our students are able to afford an education for a brighter future, creating an environment where they can increase their skills, explore new opportunities, and make progress toward their goals,” said Elyse Hoban, director of scholarship programs at NCC. The PPL Foundation awards grants through a competitive application and review process. Its focus areas are education, workforce development and community revitalization. American Cancer Society Egg Hunt The American Cancer Society's second annual community egg hunt will be held Saturday, April 1, 2:00 pm at East Bangor Park, The egg hunt will be for ages 0 to 10. It may have been cold outside with snow flurries but things were heating up inside the Washington Township Elementary gym on January 28th. The foul shooting event was the Northeast District Hoop Shoot hosted by the Bangor Elks Lodge #1106. A total of 36 girls and boys participated. Mya Bartosh and Justin Petersen both won their respective age groups. Mya made 16 of 25 to win the 8 and 9 girls category while Justin sank 20 of 25 to earn the 12 and 13 boys title. Both represented the Bangor Elks and will advance to the state finals on March 4th at Bellefonte High School near State College. Kurt Snyder in the 10 and 11 boys and Kaylee Holland in the 12 and 13 girls earned third place trophies also from the Bangor Elks Lodge. Dansbury Depot seeks Musicians & Artisans
The Dansbury Depot Committee of the Eastburg Community Alliance is looking for artists/fine arts craftsperson to display their talents at Music on Mondays at the Dansbury Depot during the months of June, July, August and September. We will feature an artist and a fine arts craftsperson, (jewelry, pottery, textile art, etc.) at each one. The Maine Explodes - 1898
A massive explosion of unknown origin sinks the battleship USS Maine in Cuba’s Havana harbor, killing 260 of the fewer than 400 American crew members aboard. One of the first American battleships, the Maine weighed more than 6,000 tons and was built at a cost of more than $2 million. Ostensibly on a friendly visit, the Maine had been sent to Cuba to protect the interests of Americans there after a rebellion against Spanish rule broke out in Havana in January.
An official U.S. Naval Court of Inquiry ruled in March that the ship was blown up by a mine, without directly placing the blame on Spain. Much of Congress and a majority of the American public expressed little doubt that Spain was responsible and called for a declaration of war. In 1976, a team of American naval investigators concluded that the Maine explosion was likely caused by a fire that ignited its ammunition stocks, not by a Spanish mine or act of sabotage. Season three began December 28 at the Hanover nest. The cameras and audio equipment installed for the 2016 season continue to provide excellent views and audio of this eagle family. The live stream began December 17, 2016 shortly after the installation of two new cameras and audio equipment. Eggs were laid on February 18 and 21. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest. Hanover is located in south-central PA about five miles from the Mason-Dixon line. NCC to Stage Collision Northampton Community College (NCC) will stage a production of Collision, a play by Lyle Kessler, in which the lives of three students, a professor and a stranger collide.

Can You Believe It?Thief crawls into store, steals magazines
(UPI) -- A British shopkeeper shared video of a bizarre theft where a man crawled into the store on all fours and grabbed magazines meant for young girls. Sunny Patel, owner of the Best-One store in the Knowle district of Bristol, England, posted CCTV videos to Facebook showing different angles of the Friday incident at the store.
The videos show the man reaching in through the automatic doors to grab a package of toilet paper and place it in front of the door to prevent it from closing. The man then gets down on his hands and knees, crawls a few feet into the store, grabs a handful of magazines, and flees. Patel said the magazines were designed for young girls and featured popular cartoon character Peppa Pig. The video shows the man returns moments later and repeats the same steps to take more magazines. The man comes back a third time after scant minutes, but this time he is greeted inside the store by an employee. The employee walks up to the crawling man, who freezes in place as if trying not to be noticed by the worker, who grabs the package of toilet paper from the doorway and blocks the man's attempts to grab another handful of magazines. "All in all I want my magazines back!" Patel wrote. He said the man got away with about $31 worth of magazines. "I know this isn't a massive amount but it's purely down to principles. This is to send a message out loud and clear to locals that we will not tolerate this. An example has to be made," Patel told the Bristol Post. Police are investigating the incident. (BPT) - A house with ample windows can win your heart with silent promises of sun-drenched rooms and warm breezes wafting through open windows. The truth, however, is that even a home with windows galore can have rooms that feel dark and cave like.
Some of the most-loved aspects of modern design - open, expansive floor plans, wood flooring in darker tones, walls of windows - may leave portions of a room dazzled with sun and other parts dim and poorly lit. For example, a room with a wall full of picture windows will often lack windows on other walls. Near the windows, you'll get plenty of sunlight and some glare, but the natural light might not make it to the far corners of the room - especially if it's a large space like a great room. What's more, interior spaces like powder rooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms and closets often have no windows at all, making them feel small and dark. No one wants rooms that look like caves - not even if your house has an actual "man cave" or "woman cave" in it! Fortunately, a few smart decorating tricks and some budget-friendly, high-impact enhancements can help brighten rooms and relieve that cavelike feeling. Sunlight solutions Of course, the sure-fire way to get more light into a room is to add more windows, but that's not always a practical or cost-effective solution. Instead, look for alternative ways to bring more sunlight into a room. Daylighting systems can bring sunlight from a rooftop down into a room, allowing natural light to illuminate dark spaces where light from windows can't reach. For example, the Solatube Daylighting System captures daylight with a rooftop dome. A highly reflective tube funnels light inside the home, where a decorative fixture on the ceiling spills the natural light into dim areas. The tube fits between rafters, so there's no need to cut through critical structures, do frame work or make repairs to sheetrock. What's more, a large mirror mimics the feeling of a window, making rooms feel bigger and brighter. Window dressing Maximizing the amount of light that comes in through the windows you do have is easy. Keep curtains light and airy, and use blinds or shades to control the amount of light coming from the window. Install curtain rods 2 feet wider than windows so that when curtains or drapes are open, they don't block any of the window or the light coming through it. You can also "dress" walls to mimic the look of windows. For example, if you have a windowless powder room, adding a transom above the door can help the room feel bigger while borrowing light from adjacent rooms. The tactic of borrowing light can also work if you're able to put a pass through between a closed off room and an adjacent one that has windows. Decorating tricks Finally, don't overlook the power of decor in making a room feel bright and welcoming. Light-hued walls of white, cream or pale yellow or blue not only make a room feel bigger, they evoke the visual qualities of natural light. Large windowless rooms, like a basement play room, can benefit from large framed art. Select scenes that mimic the view you might get from a picture window, such as a seascape, mountain scene or city skyline. Filtered overhead light can also create the effect of a natural light source. For example, drape light-colored, opaque fabric above a bed, so that the cloth conceals the overhead light fixture. BAHS Marching Band Uniform Fund Drive The Bangor Area High School Marching Band uniforms, which are modeled after Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. Jamilah Lemieux, a former senior editor at Ebony magazine and current vice president of news and men’s programming at Interactive One, an online news platform, will speak at Northampton Community College (NCC) on Thursday, February 16, at 11:00 a.m., as part of the College’s observation of Black History Month. The talk is titled The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, but It Might Be Live-Streamed.
Also included on February 16 will be social justice performances by NCC students, starting at 9:30 a.m. and a faculty panel discussion at 1:30 p.m.

Then we’ll put on warm layers and snowshoes to go outside and experience a snowy winter night. Snowshoes and trekking poles will be provided. If we don’t get any snow then we will hike in our boots. The hike will be about half a mile. Wear waterproof boots and dress for the weather. Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Registration is required. You will be asked to specify your age and weight range when registering to determine what size snowshoe you will need. If you plan to bring your own snowshoes note that on your registration so we can offer the equipment to additional families.

PoconoArts classes fill on a first come, first serve basis. Placement in a course is secured when payment in full is received. If PoconoArts must cancel a class due to low enrollment, students will be notified prior to the scheduled start date of the class and full refunds will be issued. Tuition refunds will be honored if received ten days prior to the beginning of a class/workshop. PoconoArts will not refund or reduce any class fees for missed classes or late enrollment. The Pocono Arts Council is a local arts service organization serving Monroe, Pike and Wayne counties.

Enjoy a trek through the snow in snowshoes looking for animal tracks and signs. Snowshoes and trekking poles will be provided. If we don’t get any snow we’ll hike in our boots. Participants should wear waterproof boots, dress for the weather, bring snacks and bottled water. Registration is required. You will be asked to specify your age and weight range when registering to determine what size snowshoe you will need.

BAHS Drama Department Pancake Breakfast
On Saturday, February 18, from 8am to noon, at Bangor Area Middle School, the Bangor High School Drama Department will host the fourth annual pancake breakfast with the cast of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.” Classic characters, such as Belle, the Beast, and Mrs. Potts, will transport visitors to the French countryside as they welcome guests of all ages with music, food, and activities.
In addition to restaurant-quality food and top-notch service, patrons can take advantage of a special opportunity to have their photo taken with the princess, the beast, and the enchanted characters. After snapping a photo and filling their bellies, guests can play games and participate in other activities, all while enjoying musical performances from the cast of “Disney’s Beauty and the Beast”.

Northampton Community College (NCC) will be holding free Information sessions about its Lineworker program at 5 pm on February 13 and February 21, 2017 at Alumni Hall, Room 130 A-D, Gates Center, Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township. These sessions are mandatory for anyone who would like to enroll in the program.
The session will provide students with the opportunity to meet the instructors, hear about the program and its requirements, and gain information about potential resources for financial assistance for qualified candidates.
