Flood Watch Until 2pm Friday
The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Flood Watch for the entire area including the Slate Belt until 2pm Friday afternoon. Rain with embedded thunderstorms is forecast to overspread the region on Thursday. Rain will likely be heavy at times, especially Thursday morning into early afternoon. Rainfall totals of one to two inches with isolated three inch amounts are expected. This will be the third rainfall event in the last week. The ground remains wet, and rivers and streams continue to run high. The moderate to heavy rain will likely result in some roadway flooding along with flooding in areas of poor drainage on Thursday. Isolated instances of flash flooding may occur, especially in urban areas. Some small streams and creeks may leave their banks Thursday afternoon into Thursday night. Minor to moderate flooding could then occur along a number of larger rivers late Thursday night into Friday. The river flooding could persist through the weekend.

Bangor Junior Softball Wins First

Call it History in the making if you want. That's what Bangor Jr. High did on Monday when the first ever Jr. High Softball team won it's Opening Season Game. Harvat got things rolling for the Slaters in the second with a double to deep center and put the first run on the board on a hit from Carson. Southern Lehigh took an early lead in the third only to have the Slaters start hitting and not look back. Rambo hit a double and scored on a hit from Ott. Meyers hit a double and scored on a big hit from Crawford, after which Smith hit an inside park home run adding two more to the board. Bangor exploded in the bottom of the sixth on Southern Lehigh taking it to a 14-6 finish.
Wolf Offers Help Fighting Forest Fires
Harrisburg, PA – Governor Tom Wolf today announced applications are being accepted for federal grants to help Pennsylvania’s rural communities better guard against the threat of fires in forested, undeveloped, and unprotected areas.
“The value of these grants is accentuated when we look back at the tragedy of Tennessee’s wildfires late last year, and Pennsylvania’s wildfire last April that burned for almost two weeks across more than 8,000 acres on the Pike-Monroe county line,” Governor Wolf said. “Well-trained, well-equipped volunteers in rural areas often are the front line of defense in these types of wildfires. These men and women deserve the very best training and equipment, and these grants help them obtain both.”
In 2016, $571,202 was awarded to 142 volunteer fire companies serving rural areas and communities where forest and brush fires are common. The grant program, offered through the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and paid through federal grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, has awarded more than $12 million since it began in 1982.
Local firefighting forces in rural areas or communities with fewer than 10,000 residents qualify for the aid, which is used for training and equipment purchases directly related to fighting brush and forest fires.
“In reviewing applications, DCNR will place priority on those requests seeking funds for projects that include the purchase of wildfire suppression equipment and protective clothing and gear,” said DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. “These are the items the smaller fire companies often need most.”
Grants also may be used for purchasing mobile or portable radios, installing dry hydrants, wildfire prevention and mitigation work and training wildfire fighters, or converting and maintaining federal excess vehicles. These vehicles are presented to the local departments exhibiting the greatest needs and those that commit to outfitting them for fire suppression.
Aid is granted on a cost-share basis. Grants for any project during a fiscal year cannot exceed 50 percent of the actual expenditures of local, public and private nonprofit organizations in the agreement. The maximum grant that will be considered from any fire company in 2017 is $7,500.
Grant applications must be electronically submitted through DCNR’s grant website by 4 p.m. Thursday, May 18. To expedite application and decision-making processes,
DCNR is accepting only online applications. Applicants should visit www.dcnr.pa.gov and click on “Grants.”
For more information, contact the bureau’s Division of Forest Fire Protection at (717) 787-2925; email to ra-ffp@state.pa.us; or visit www.dcnr.pa.gov (click on “Forestry,” then “Wildland Fire”

First modern Olympic Games - 1896

On April 6, 1896, the Olympic Games, a long-lost tradition of ancient Greece, are reborn in Athens 1,500 years after being banned by Roman Emperor Theodosius I. At the opening of the Athens Games, King Georgios I of Greece and a crowd of 60,000 spectators welcomed athletes from 13 nations to the international competition.
The first recorded Olympic Games were held at Olympia in the Greek city-state of Elis in 776 B.C., but it is generally accepted that the Olympics were at least 500 years old at that time. The ancient Olympics, held every four years, occurred during a religious festival honoring the Greek god Zeus. In the eighth century B.C., contestants came from a dozen or more Greek cities, and by the fifth century B.C. from as many as 100 cities from throughout the Greek empire. Initially, Olympic competition was limited to foot races, but later a number of other events were added, including wrestling, boxing, horse and chariot racing, and military competitions. The pentathlon, introduced in 708 B.C., consisted of a foot race, the long jump, discus and javelin throws, and wrestling. With the rise of Rome, the Olympics declined, and in 393 A.D. the Roman Emperor Theodosius I, a Christian, abolished the Games as part of his efforts to suppress paganism in the Roman Empire.
Pierre de Coubertin became IOC president in 1896 and guided the Olympic Games through its difficult early years, when it lacked much popular support and was overshadowed by world’s fairs. In 1924, the first truly successful Olympic Games were held in Paris, involving more than 3,000 athletes, including more than 100 women, from 44 nations. The first Winter Olympic Games were also held that year. In 1925, Coubertin retired. The Olympic Games have come to be regarded as the foremost international sports competition. At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, more than 10,000 athletes from 200 countries competed, including nearly 4,000 women. In 2004, the Summer Olympics returned to Athens, with more than 11,000 athletes competing from 202 countries. In a proud moment for Greeks and an exciting one for spectators, the shotput competition was held at the site of the classical Games in Olympia.

Book returned to New Jersey library 50 years past due date![]() (UPI) -- A New Jersey library was surprised to receive a very overdue book last week.
The Phillipsburg Free Public Library in Phillipsburg, N.J., confirmed Friday that a copy of the Jules Verne book Dropped from the Clouds was brought back more than 50 years later. "Look what we found in our book drop yesterday!" the library wrote on its Facebook page. "At 50 years overdue, it's not quite as late as some books that have made the news in recent months ... but it's the most overdue book we've seen here!" The copy of Dropped from the Clouds was due Jan. 5, 1967. Library director Deb Messling told Lehigh Valley Live that staff aren't sure who returned the book, which was in too poor of condition to return to circulation. "It looks like someone loved it for a long time," she said. "Hopefully it did some good out in the world." The Phillipsburg library charges a late fee of 10 cents a day, which would amount to more than $1,800 owed for the book in question. The library said it will cap its charge at $3 for whoever returned the book. |

9 tips to boost productivity in the workplace![]() (BPT) - If you feel like you’re working more, but getting less done, you’re not alone. Employees are working an average of 44 hours per week, but only think 29 of those are productive, according to a new survey of 1,200 full time office workers.
The “Productivity in the Workplace” study commissioned by Fellowes found respondents feel the key to productivity is making adjustments within the existing workday versus working more hours. Chatty co-workers top the list of productivity killers, with unnecessary meetings, cell phone disruptions and problems with office equipment also on the list. Productivity can be increased by cutting meetings, creating more quiet spaces to work, making schedules flexible and updating technology. Laura Stack, also known as “The Productivity Pro,” travels the country helping organizations of every size improve their employee and team productivity. She shares the following tips to help people make the most of their hours in the office. 1. Give disruptions the boot. Resist the urge to constantly check email and turn off email notifications. Put your cell phone on airplane mode, instant messaging on Do Not Disturb, and let calls go to voice-mail. 2. Speak up. Need something new in the office to help your co-workers and you stay more productive? It never hurts to ask. Office equipment, like printers and shredders, are being made with advanced technologies that can make your job easier. 3. Cut down on meetings. Ask yourself if you really need to have a meeting. Can you cover agenda items via email? Cancel meetings if face time isn’t imperative and give colleagues more time to get their jobs done. 4. Don’t multi-task, single-task. When you have a meeting, make sure you are 100 percent focused. You don’t want to miss crucial updates and next steps on projects, it will only hurt your productivity later. 5. Practice "on, in, around, or shred." Eighty-eight percent of people use paper in the office. Keep items you work with daily on your desk, those you work with weekly in your desk drawers, and those you work with monthly around your desk, in archives, or filing cabinet. Use an automatic shredder for everything else, like Fellowes’ line of AutoMax shredders, which shred up to 500 sheets of paper at a time with the simple touch of a button –which helps avoid disruptions. 6. Break it down. If you have trouble getting started with a big task, break it into smaller chunks. Ask yourself, “What is the next action step I need to take to see progress on this project?” Then set a timer, leap into action, and focus on the next step. 7. Vary activities. For mental and physical alertness, vary sitting activities with standing ones, mental activities with physical ones. It will help prevent fatigue and keep your efficiency high. 8. Put some fun into your work. Turn boring tasks into a game. Make a deal with yourself that when you complete the activity, you will do something fun afterward – like take a walk or have a piece of chocolate. 9. Change of scenery. Try to work in a different setting once a week. Whether you work from home, the library, or a nearby park, new surroundings can inspire ideas and give you the energy you need to tackle your to-do list. Finance...The lowdown on leasing![]() (BPT) - If you're in the market for a new car, you might be thinking about leasing. After all, it seems very attractive on the surface - so attractive that leases accounted for one-third of all vehicles sales nationally in 2016. Taking a closer look though, you may be surprised to see there's more than meets the eye in some lease offers. So, here are a few need-to-know nuggets about leasing a car.
Cash up front is required. If you're thinking that leasing gets you out of needing cash for a down payment, think again. That low monthly payment you're after comes with upfront costs like taxes, registration, tags and other fees all due at signing. This could cost you thousands of dollars. And, if you want to lower the monthly payment even further, you'll have to put additional funds toward the cost of the lease to get your payment where you want it to be. Bells and whistles cost extra. Just like when you're buying a new car, the extras cost more. Advertised lease specials are usually for the base model - not the one with the navigation and safety packages you're probably coveting. Adding on all the bells and whistles to your vehicle will mean higher payments because that raises the price of the car. Again, you may have to put an additional deposit down to land the payment you think you can afford. Not owning means no asset. Leasing is basically renting a car for an extended period of time - three to five years or so. Unlike buying a car, you won't have an asset at the end of your lease. Which means you'll have a decision to make: pay the residual value (the value of the car at the lease's end) to own the car outright, finance the residual or turn in your leased car for another. Regardless, you'll again need the cash for a down payment or the upfront costs for your next lease - whereas with buying a car you'll have a definitive end to monthly payments. Once your loan is paid off, you can put that money toward savings or paying down debt. Or, you can use your car as a trade-in on another ride or for cash if you ever need to sell it. Once you're in it, stay in it. If you get halfway through your lease and decide it's not for you, you'll be charged for early termination, something to keep in mind if your financial lifestyle changes often. In some cases, you might be required to continue to pay all regularly scheduled payments or your credit could take a hit. Understand complex negotiations. Understanding how a car loan works can sometimes be difficult for a first-timer, and things get even more intricate when you lease. Here are a few terms you may hear during lease negotiations:
If you want to ace your lease negotiation, you should study the vocab and have A+ credit, too. You may not get the best deal if you're unsure about your credit score, leasing terminology or the calculations mentioned above. Mind your miles. Depending on how often you get behind the wheel and how far you go, you could be forced to make some lifestyle changes if you lease. Most leases cap mileage somewhere between 10,000 and 15,000 miles per year, or a total of 30,000 to 45,000 miles. Driving over this limit could cost you up to 25 cents per mile. If you drive 30 miles round-trip for your commute, you're traveling 150 miles over a five-day workweek. That's nearly 8,000 miles just driving to work each year - 24,000 miles over the course of your lease. Depending on your limit, that doesn't leave much wiggle room for things like road trips, traveling to sporting events, chauffeuring the kids to extracurriculars or even grabbing a bite to eat downtown. Those things could be taken off the table if you lease. If the freedom of driving whenever, wherever is something you enjoy, a lease may not be the best option. The choice is yours. Leasing might be for you if you want to drive a new car every three to five years, can drive within the limits and maintain good credit. On the other hand, today's cars can easily last 10 years if maintained well, and once fully paid for, allow you to sock away monthly payments for other things. There are sites that offer side-by-side comparisons of buying and leasing to help you make the right choice. This calculator from Navy Federal Credit Union is just one example. In the end, it's up to you. Armed with the details on the real deal of leasing and your buying options, you're on the road to making the right choice |

Letters to Homefront Magazine
A Love Story Between a Community and its World War II Soldiers

The project to publish a book about the Homefront Magazine began in October 2015. The co-authors; Marc Blau, Chip Turtzo, Karen Brewer and Deanna Ruzanski assembled volunteers to read and summarize the 4000 + letters that WW II soldiers sent home to their beloved Homefront Magazine.
The letters were then categorized by topic, and placed into appropriate chapters. Some of the chapters are: The Fairest of the Month, Battlefield Stories, Soldier’s Artwork, Poems and Prayers, Heroes and more.
The book highlights the letters and used the hand-written words of our Slate Belt fighting men and women to tell the story. Many of your fathers and grandfathers are mentioned in the book and while it was unfeasible to use all of the letters, those that were chosen was based on content. Books can be picked up on Sunday April 23, 2017 from 9 -Noon., however to unsure that copies are available for all who would like a copy, pre-orders are now being taken.
Please send a check payable to the Slate Belt Heritage Center (att: Marc Blau) for $35.00 to reserve your copy. Those out of town desiring a copy must add $10..00 to cover cost for shipping/handling. For additional information contact: Karen Brewer @ 610-588-8615.

1885 Club Accepting Nominations
The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.
To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Nominations can also be e mailed to hontzc@bangorsd.org
