Not Sunburn But Stage 4 Breast CancerEmma Baty, Redbook
When Jennifer Cordts noticed a red spot that looked like a sunburn on her breast two years ago, she thought it'd be best to get a mammogram - just in case. The test came back normal, and she was told that the issue was she needed a bigger bra, she told WFAA, a Dallas-Fort Worth news station. Like any mom with access to the internet, she Googled her symptoms when the red spot didn't go away. The first result to come up was IBC, or inflammatory breast cancer. "Everybody was asleep, and I was terrified," she told WFAA. She went back to her doctor for a biopsy and her suspicions were quickly confirmed: She had stage four IBC. When the doctor told her, all she could think about was the fact that her Google search said no one survives this kind of cancer. IBC looks different than other kinds of breast cancer, which is why doctors didn't catch it with a mammogram. Women with IBC rarely never develop the stereotypical lump that most women with breast cancer do, Dr. Marleen Meyers, a medical oncologist at NYU's Perlmutter Cancer Center, told Health. (Meyers has not treated Cordts.) Although this type of breast cancer only makes up one to five percent of all breast cancer diagnoses in the U.S., that doesn't mean it shouldn't be taken seriously. Cordt was given between three and five years to live, and she hopes her story can be a warning for other women to educate themselves. Cordt plans to spend the rest of her life checking things off her bucket list. She's already gonet o a Celine Dion concert and taken her daughter to the beach for the first time. "I really want this to educate," Cordt said. "I really want someone to go 'Oh my gosh I have redness in my breast. I better … push past the mammogram and ask for some more tests.'" For starters, women should remember that lumps aren't the only indicator for breast cancer. Other symptoms of IBC include pitted or ridged skin, rapid breast growth, breast heaviness or tenderness, or inverted nipples. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, go get yourself checked out. Franklin became interested in electricity in the mid-1740s, a time when much was still unknown on the topic, and spent almost a decade conducting electrical experiments. He coined a number of terms used today, including battery, conductor and electrician. He also invented the lightning rod, used to protect buildings and ships. Franklin was born on January 17, 1706, in Boston, to a candle and soap maker named Josiah Franklin, who fathered 17 children, and his wife Abiah Folger. Franklin’s formal education ended at age 10 and he went to work as an apprentice to his brother James, a printer. In 1723, following a dispute with his brother, Franklin left Boston and ended up in Philadelphia, where he found work as a printer. Following a brief stint as a printer in London, Franklin returned to Philadelphia and became a successful businessman, whose publishing ventures included the Pennsylvania Gazette and Poor Richard’s Almanack, a collection of homespun proverbs advocating hard work and honesty in order to get ahead. The almanac, which Franklin first published in 1733 under the pen name Richard Saunders, included such wisdom as: “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” Whether or not Franklin followed this advice in his own life, he came to represent the classic American overachiever. In addition to his accomplishments in business and science, he is noted for his numerous civic contributions. Among other things, he developed a library, insurance company, city hospital and academy in Philadelphia that would later become the University of Pennsylvania. Moorestown Drive Bridge Construction

In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Nominations can also be e mailed to [email protected]

Hill Elementary School. This year, this chorus had over 80 members. Along with their two annual chorus concerts, they performed in the community throughout the year. They have sung in the past years at East Stroudsburg Borough's Harvest Fest, Big Brother/Big Sister Telethon, Pocono Medical Center's Tree Lighting, Stroud Mall, Lackawanna Train Ride Excursions, PTA events, and Pancake Day. This year their spring program was "A Musical Road Trip Across the USA". They stopped in many places on their travels and performed songs like "Fifty Nifty United States", Deep in the Heart of Texas", and "Shenandoah". Join them on this musical journey where they always end up "Home"! Linda Kolbek is the artist for the evening. Her art is derivative to the work of Joan Miro and the "cartoon'ish" styles of Sally Cruikshank. It could be described as a "abstract cartoon". Her primary use of media is acrylic on canvas, and the themes range from the whimsical to the strange spiritual world of the unknown. She enjoy play on words, and this is also another reoccurring theme found in the structure of her work. Most of her influence is based on personal experiences that have happened in her life. The Washington Township Supervisors Meeting scheduled for 7:00 pm on June 14, 2017 at Washington Township will include a discussion on stormwater and the regulations for the MS-4 program as developed by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). DEP requires that municipalities adhere to specific guidelines for the management of stormwater. Municipalities are now required to obtain an MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) Permit. As part of this permit, each municipality is required to reduce the amount of pollutants found within the local watershed areas. These improvements include tree plantings, stormwater basin upgrades, and stream bank restoration. The improvements are designed to help reduce the amount of pollutants that reach the local streams, thus creating a healthier environment for the surrounding residents and wildlife. Topics to be discussed include water supply, riparian buffers, farms and their impact to water quality, siltation, rain gardens and how residents can help reduce pollutants. Don't miss this one and taste why this Festival is in its twenty third (23) successful year, maybe it’s because the best Strawberries wind up in our desserts. Decide for yourself, Directions to Faith United church for this Strawberry Festival are available on the website: www.faithunited.net Quiet Valley’s Garden Party & Tour Opening On Saturday June 17, 2017 Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm will open for their 54th Summer Tour Season starting with their tenth annual Summer Garden Party. Visitors coming to the farm for the historic tour will experience guides portraying family members going about a typical day on a homestead in the 1800s. In addition to the tour, folks will have a chance to involve themselves in a variety of garden-related activities. Tour a typical Pennsylvania German kitchen garden, get help with garden basics, sample yummy things made with fresh herbs and vegetables and take home some recipes. At the outdoor brick oven herb breads will be baked and samples shared. This year’s feature area, Outdoor Living Space will have an example of a comfortable gathering place for families looking for some fresh air and relaxation at home, complete with a Zen gravel bed. There will be new adventures at the party including two Food Demonstrations, Dutch Oven Cooking with Fresh Herbs and Easy Herb Cheese Making. Older youth and adults will enjoy making birds using wire and paper as well as quilled flower mobiles.
